These are some of my favorites. We used to go out to eat a lot but with 3 kids now we don't get to anymore.

I have a very picky friend who is coming to town from Denver. I need to take her and her new husband out to dinner on a Friday night. She is extremely picky ( not food wise- taste wise) and I need an upscale or cool dining place to take her for dinner and drinks.A place that isn't too loud so we can converse. Also, she wants a place they do not have in Denver, so that throws out some of my Plaza ideas. I've not been to P & L to know where we could go.
Where would you take this hip friend?

What about J Gilberts at 91st & Metcalf? It's not really upscale, but it's a good place with good food and ambiance. There's also Skies, Maya's Mexican Bistro (http://www.mayasmexicanbistro.com), Garozzo's is always awesome, I've heard the Bluestem is good, but haven't been. La Bodega, Plaza III...
Might want to do a Google for "upscale dining in Kansas City" or "Fine dining in Kansas City."
LaBodega was a great suggestions, that place rocks! It is one of our favorites. It can get pricy, but let me tell you it is well worth it and is very hip! Be prepared to wait, as they don't take reservations, but after a glass of their homemade sangria you won't care!
I also recently tried Cafe Trio on Broadway in Midtown and it was FABULOUS! They have a fantastic menu and everything my group had was seriously delicious, and yes I DID sample off of everyone's plate! ;) It is small and fairly intimate but also busy. They do take reservations, though and I would recommend it.
I thought Raglan Road was just gorgeous inside. The menu is very different and the food is good. It's on the east side of the P&L district, right across the street from the Sprint Center. Other places at P&L I think would be fancy enough but I've never been to would be Makers Mark and 801 Chophouse. I've heard both have good food, a bit expensive though. Raglan Road has a wow effect when you walk in - I think it would be a great place to take an out-of-towner.
Don't forget to get your parking validated so that it's only $2 if you go to the P&L district. Also, take some time and enjoy what they call the "living room" in the middle section. If you catch it on the right night, there will likely be a concert going on once the weather warms up.
sullivans steakhouse has an awsome bar great food. Its on 119th st in leawood. Definitely upscale drinks are to die for.
Plaza III on the Plaza is not a chain, so it would be a new place for your friend. Jack Stack BBQ on the Plaza is about as Kansas City as you can get. Bristol & Bice Bistro are good in the P&L area. How about Lidia's in the Frieght House dist? 1924 Main & Michael Smith's in the Crossroads are excellent. Pierpont's at the Union Station has the best drinks in town + good food. Hope this helps. Bon Appetit'.
Take her to STyx at the legends its a Japanese steak house and they cook at your table like at Gojos on the plaza.
For something a little different but unique, I love JP's Wine Bar! There are several other things like this popping up, but it's my favorite. There is one near Power and Light in the Crossroads area and a new one in Leawood. Have fun!
I would take her to either 1924 Main if you want in the city, or if you don't mind the drive, Cafe Des Amis in parkville is amazing.
We love Osteria il Centro on Main. It's our favorite Italian restaurant (Accruso's across the street is great, too.) And it's just on the other side of the Plaza so you could walk around there after dinner.
I would check out Pierpont's at Union Station. Its a steak and seafood restaraunt. It is one of a kind, the decor is very cool, and the food is AMAZING!!! It is favorite for special occassions! The website is www.pierponts.com
Skies Restaurant (on top of the 500' Hyatt hotel.) The whole resaurant rotates 360 degrees in an hour with glass walls so you can view the city while dining. Pricy though. (And I don't know if there's something like that in Denver.)
Also, there was an internet article I read recently that mentioned what Michelle said: La Fou Frog
Happy eating!
Angie
J. Alexander's in OP - great food, great atmosphere and not too pricey
Lidia's downtown - unique setting and great food!
Hello- I have a wonderful place to eat and dance. You guessed it p&l For the dancing I would highly recomend the shark bar. it plays all 90's music if not into that there is something for everyone at the p&l. Even if you are the "snotty kind" They have Italian bistros, a micro brewery, Happy hunting.
I LOVE Maya's but I certainly wouldn't call it upscale although it's my first choice! Garozzo's is great, but tables are close and it can be kinda loud. And whatever you do, don't take them down to the original one at 7th and Harrison if she's picky.
Yai's Yai's is good and local. Is Bristol a chain? Pierpont's at Union Station or Piropos.
JJ's is down off the Plaza. OH! Tatsu's!!! It's small, GREAT food and lots of ambiance! It is about 90th and Roe. Aixois is near Brookside and the food is amazing! But very loud when we took friends there over the winter.
Good luck
