I had a friend who had her son at UNLV preschool. I'm pretty sure they were happy there. She did say that they were a little too cuddly with the kids, and I think she switched to get him into something more academic.

As for the germs, my older son started preschool about 3 months before my younger son was born. Although my son had a few ear infections, maybe a fever here or there, he never passed anything to his little brother. It was good for my older son because he had his own thing to go to.

hello F.
i dont know about unlv sorry. i do agree most kids get mild cold symptoms when they start school.for my son it was on and off and never severe. i believe it has to do with procedures of the day care.ask them how and how often they clean the toys,do they make sure the kids wash their hands several times a day?,do they have and stick to a strict sick child policy? my daycare had good policies on all of these. now my son is in kindergarten and i have 4 mo old twins, after school its straight to the shower and a change of clothes,i figure thats the best i can do to prevent germ spreading from school.
my advice-send him..you will value the extra hrs alone and he will get great benefits from school.germs are everywhere!

Hello F.,
I agree, germs are everywhere and you cannot stop that. My little girl goes to Litl Scholar Acadamy and they sanatize twice a day. Once when the children are sleeping (floors are mopped and toys are cleaned) and then after hours. They also wash their hands after they sneeze or cough.

I suggest you put the newborn on any waiting list they may have to guarentee availability when he/she arrives.

Best of luck.

F.,

The best thing you can do to protect your newborn is to breastfeed him or her.

I've heard great things about the UNLV preschool. I haven't had my kids there because it is very difficult to get in but I know people who have had kids there and everyone has had really positive things to say.

I do know they have a new director so we'll see if the change is positive or not.

Good luck!

Hi F.:

My kids have never attended UNLV preschool, but a good friend of mine had her daughter there, and they absolutely loved it! As for starting your son right now, I think there are benefits and drawbacks.
Aside from the germs, you want to make sure your son knows that you aren't making him "go away" just because you are going to have a new baby to take care of. Kids have a strange way of thinking everything is their fault, and I've read that putting them in preschool so close to the birth of another baby can send them the message that you have a new baby around and don't want them there anymore. I do think that at age 3, there are tremendous benefits to putting him in preschool. My son is 4, has never been to preschool, and I can see a big difference in him than other kids. The attachment he has to me, simply to go to Sunday school at church was a real eye opener to this problem.

I think that since you did get accepted at the UNLV program, it would be a good idea to attend. I've heard that it is sometimes difficult to get in there because of such a long waiting list. And as long as you make sure your son knows he is very special and just as important and loved as the new baby, you should be fine. Good luck, and congratulations

Dear F.,
I know 4 moms who have had a total of 7 kids at the UNLV pre-school in the past few years. They all had good things to say and were pleased with the care the children received. Two of these moms have degrees in Early Childhood education too! Exposure to other children and picking up germs can be a problem in any preschool program. I don't fault the staff-- It's more about parents who send their children to school when they are aware they are sick.
