Hi Ladies,

2 years ago I fell down the stairs and herniated a disk at T 11-12. And well ever since then I have been on pain medication. Ive tried alternatives like physical therapy and steriod injuections with no help. But my concern is that every 6 months or so I have to change my medication because I start getting nauseous and having hot flashes. I started on Vicodin and then switched to Loratab and now Im on Percocet and am considering switching back to Vicodin. My doctor doesnt think its an issue but I hate the way it makes me feel - plus Im never able to take the full amount which means Im always in pain. Could someone please tell me if they have ever heard of building an Un-tolerance to pain medication. I heard once about a woman that accidently killed her baby because she had a c-section and her body converted the pain medication to morphine in her breast milk. Luckly that didnt happen when I had my c-section with my daughter.

I just want to know if this is a common thing or if I should see a specialist.

Also does anyone recommend a GOOD pain management doctor?

What can I do next?

I have not heard of an un-tolerance to pain meds. My mom had a car accident and has gotten a high tolerance to pain meds. A pain management Doc is a great idea. I work in a OT office and we see a lot of patients who need pain management. Have you tried massage and did your pt utilize traction? Sometimes with the traction you can get the disc to slip back in. You can also get a home unit or try TENS unit.

I had some of the similar problems. I know that it is not the same as the back pain. But for me all the pain pills that you mention are rather strong and they will make you sick with the hot flashes, but all of those pain medications are also highly addictive, and your doctor should have told you that long term are dangerous. If you have to take pain medication I recommend ultra-cet-- this is a mild pain medication and can be taken in 1 or 2 for your pain tolerance. I took only one with my gall bladder surgery. It worked really well for me. My aunt died from pain pills after she got addicted to them. so please be careful and a pain management doctor would be your alternative.
Hope this is helpful. T.D

Hello C.,
My name is kathy; and i too had a major disc promblem! I am on and have been oxycontins since 2001. I have had to increase the dosage over the years. The toleranc elevel does change. I am not at 80mg two times day. That's alot. I often feel very little relief, yet I am at the point where I refuse to take more. Most days I am okay with the medication. I did a lumbar fusion surgery and came out of surgery with leg problems! Increasing the dosage is normal. You may want to set a limit as I have done. But yes, our bodies get to a point that the dosages no longer work well. I wish you the best with this! If I can help you in any other way-please contact me!
Truly,
Kathy Nunez
