Hi Moms..
My son is 4 years old and last night i noticed he had something in is belly button.. i took him to the doctor today, he told me that he has an umbilical hernia. He told me that he must have had it since he was born, i dont ever remember seeing something like that in my sons belly button, he told me not to worry as long it doesnt get bigger or cause pain. Has anyone had the same thing happen to their child? Should i get a 2nd opinoin.. should he have surgery to remove it? I feel the doctor answered all my question i guess i just want to make sure with other moms that i shouldnt really worry about it, at least thats how the doctor made me feel, that i just have to keep an eye on it.

Thanks moms...

I've had one all of my life and it is slightly above my belly button. After I had my daughter it started to protrude a bit and when I get a bad cold with a cough and/or am gassy it protrudes a lot, but goes down when I'm all better. I'm keeping an eye on mine and am not to the point of needing surgery. They really are no biggie, hang in there :)

A very close friend of mine actually took her 6 year old daughter in for surgery yesterday for precisely the same issue. Just as another Mama said, they had been aware of the problem & kept an eye on it for several years, but when it didn't correct itself, they needed to get it corrected. The out-patient surgery was without complication & the sweet girl is home resting for the next several days. If you feel like you'd like a 2nd opinion, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's certainly worth it if it will give you peace of mind.

I have one also & the only thing my dr said was to watch my weight & it shouldn't be an issue. Mine has never bothered me. I wouldn't worry too much :-)

My now 6 year old daughter was born with one. Her doctor watched it for a few years and we decided to have it corrected when she was 3. The concern was as she grew and became more active in school and extra curricular activities the chances of the hernia bothering her or becoming worse greatly increased. The surgery took less than 30 minutes and recovery was quick. She walked gingerly for the first couple days, but was fine after that.

My son had one when he was born. Doc said to watch it as most go away by the time they are 5 and if it hadnt then we'd need him to have it surgicially corrected. AT 5.5 he still had it, so we had the surgery. The doc said that as they get into elementary school and want to do sports, etc, it could become a problem so that is why they fix them if they are still there at age 5. He's 6 now and you cant even see the scar where he had it done and is totally fine and active.

When I was pregnant with him, MY bellybutton herniated and I had it fixed when he was 3 months old. For me, it was uncomfortable when I coughed or sneezed so I wanted it fixed. It didnt hurt, but was uncomfortable and yucky feeling. Does your son's bother him at all? Did your doc say he should have it corrected if it doesnt go away in a year?
Good luck with your decision.

My daughter had one right above her belly button since she was born. She is now 10 and I have not noticed it recently. I know school people have questioned it before and I let them know I know exactly what it is and it is not a problem. The docs told us they could take care of it if she wanted to when she was older (probably younger than she is now based on the other posts) but we have never bothered with it. It has never caused her pain or discomfort.

My daughter's was pointed out to me at about 3 mos old. She is now 2 and the dr just said watch it. Make sure it doesn't get bigger or she's not bothersome by it. I wouldn't worry too much :)
