Hi Everyone,

My son was born with an Umbilical Hernia. He is now 3.5 yo and is scheduled to have surgery this Wednesday, February 9.

The problem is that I am now getting nervous and having second thoughts!!

Does anyone have any experience......including whether your child has had the surgery, or if you opted not to have it done and what the result has been? I would not even consider it, but I read that quite a few adults have had problems when having the surgery later in life.

Any and all advice is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much to everyone!!

What can I do next?

I got an umbilical hernia while I was prego with my daughter and had it fixed 8 weeks after I had her. I've had no problems with it at all and that was back in 2000!! I'd be scared too if one of my kids had to go through a surgery but you need to look at what could happen to your son if you don't get it done.

Good luck

My husband had this surgery a few years back, he was about 31 or so at the time. He was experiencing a lot of pain, which turned out to be an umbilical hernia. They put a small piece of a mesh screen type thing in and since he hasn't had any pain or problems what so ever. And he is a VERY physically active person. I don't know of any children having it. I just wonder how the covering will grow and your son does- although I am sure they have figured that part out ;) Its not too late you could always get a second opinion, although I think its probably a good idea for the surgery. Good luck!

My son had one and he had surgery at 18 months. His recovery was fast and he was back to normal the next day. It is scary thinking about you little one going through that. I worried myself sick. When all was said and done, it was not that bad. The hardest part was him waking from anesthesia. He cried a lot until it wore off. Don't worry, your little guy will be just fine!

My daughter was born with one. The doctor advised us to wait a few years before having it repaired in hopes that it might correct itself. Since that never happened, we went ahead with the surgery when she was 3 1/2. The procedure was a simple one and she was home an hour and a half later. Recovery was fairly easy. She was a little sore the first day, but we got her up and walking day two and the more she moved around the better she felt. Kids are so resilient. Your son won't remember this and you won't have to worry about future issues that may arise.

i got one when i was preg with my first, i had it fixed afterwards and have had no problems since, including through 2 more pregnancies. my dad and 2 cousins had the same thing too! the way i understand it, any hernia can be dangerous because it can strangulate, i think you need to get it fixed. i just noticed we are from the same town, i can get you the doc who did mine and my dads if you like, though i dont know if he is pediatric. my son has had to have 2 surgeries already, one for a hernia in his groin and one for a cyst in his middle ear. it stinks, but they recover a lot quicker than you would think, and a lot quicker than we do. its really hard watching them go under the anesthesia, and they are not happy campers when they come out of it, but they bounce back so fast. the hardest part is keeping them down for the few days afterward. and schneiders/cohens childrens hospital is just wonderful with them, both of his surgeries were there. good luck.

Hi J.,

I am NEVER one to recommend surgery but there is absolutely no other way to fix a hernia. Like Sharie, I had one that appeared 10 years after my last child. It was in distress and the pain was worse than childbirth. What I have heard is that most of the problems that result as an adult is gaining weight too fast. (Stretching the stitches fast is an issue.) Mine was a quick fix with a couple of stitches.

Also google "detoxing anesthesia." I know ginger tea is good for removing the toxins that build. I'm sure you will see some other things as well. I was under anesthesia so much as a child I KNOW it has negative effects. But now I know there are natural ways to avoid them. Educate yourself. My hernia is fine now and everything is back to normal.

God bless!

My oldest son had it. I felt very apprehensive about it too but his surgery went well and his recovery went well and was short.

He had the surgery when he was four and he is now eleven. He plays ice hockey and participates in an active lifestyle any pre-teen would.

Please do it! I was born with one and my M. decided not to have the surgery when I was little to spare me the trauma of the surgery. HOWEVER...I have then lived my whole life with a belly button that hurts! During a recent surgery to remove my gall bladder I begged the doctor to fix my umbilical hernia while he was in there. Amazing...the difference. It still feels a little sensitive, but nothing like the pain I had my whole life. I always just thought that everyone's belly button hurt. LOL! Get the surgery!
