Twisted Car Seat Straps

This may seem like a silly question but after wrestling with straps on the base of my daughter's car seat yesterday, I have to ask. Does anyone have any tricks for untwisting a car seat strap. It's the part of the strap that's near the latch hook. It's super twisted. With my husband and I both tugging on it, it still won't budge. Are there any tricks out there that I don't know of? I think if I could get the cover off, I could untwist it, but I can't find a way to get the cover off.

To clarify. It's the LATCH hook strap. The one that run through the base and and connect it to the LATCH hooks in the car. Using it is not an option as is because it's stuck at too long a length. The seat is WAY too loose. If I can't get it unstuck I won't be able to use the base with the LATCH system. I've been using the seatbelt instead.

What can I do next?

there should be a way to take the cover off so that you can get to the whole latch system. if you have the seat out of the car, usually the latch runs through under the seat, if you hand won't fit through the holes, find somebody who will. If it is really a problem, check with the state police or a hospital in your area to see if they have any staff, or know of anybody, who is a certified car seat technician. SafeKids website might list some too. Good luck ... but stay on top of this as i'm sure you are aware, it's very important for your child's safety that the seat is in tightly.

We have the LATCH system. There should be an adjuster on the lower belt that connects to the LATCH system. I usually adjust the length of the belt before securing one side and adjust as needed. If you are unable to do this I would take the cover/cloth off the carseat and try to untwist the straps then use the adjuster to get the seat snug. Hope this helps.

There are monthly 'car seat safety checkpoints' in our area - perhaps there are in yours, too? I'd try that - but if not, the county generally (here, anyway) has someone staffed for the purpose of helping with car seat issues - (county nursing)

we've replaced every single car seat belt in our vehicle. For some reason, each was installed with a 'twist'. We were told that the width of the twisted portion is the width of the strength of the belt - so, believing that to be true, we make certain each belt is laying flat against the body being held -

good luck!

I'm confused... the LATCH hook strap on the base is twisted... or the actual harness on the carseat is twisted?

If its the carseta harness, then look in your manual. It will have detailed instructions for removing the cover. The harness is held to the seat by a metal bar that looks like a square with a bar in the middle, yhou turn that to the side and pull it out of the hole, then untwist.

Good for you for trying to get it untwisted, as your baby isn't as safe whe nthe harness is twisted.

Hi C.
I believe the only way you are truly going to get the strap untwisted is to take it of the hook in the back bottom of the carseat and pull it through the carseat untwist it and thread it back through I know this is a huge pain but it is the only way your daughter will be safest. :)T.

When that happened to us, I called the manufacturer of the car seat and they sent a new latch belt to use. If your manufacturer will not send you one, you can buy them at Babies R Us.
