Twin Bed Vs. Toddler Bed

My son is 17 months old and I also have a 2 month old. In a couple months I would like to start transitioning my son from his crib to a bed so that my daughter can use the crib (she currently sleeps in a cradle in my room.) I have been trying to decide between getting a toddler bed and if it is worth the expense or if I should go straight to a regular twin bed.

What can I do next?

Toddler beds are lower to the ground if they fall off, but they do grow out of them. A twin bed is better because there are all those cute fun sheets to choose from, and if you have an IKEA store anywhere near you they have some pretty neat twin beds. Let him help pick out his bed, give him a couple choices of sheets and he'll feel like a big boy!
I like the other lady's suggestion to put one side against the wall and if you feel like you need a rail on the other side get one. Reward him for staying in his big boy bed.

Definitely a toddler

I went for the toddler for a year and then put my daughter in a twin - she did alright for a bit but now wants to sleep with me almost every night and I think its because the bed is too high for her.

I am going to Ikea in a few weeks to buy her one of the extendable beds - maybe I should have done this from the start - so even as she grows taller the bed wont be any higher...

Good luck in your search - try looking at IKEA yourself - the prices are great and well worth the money spent.

they have an entire kids line of toys and furniture and so forth.

a toddler bed is a waste of money, my daughter went to a queen size bed at the age of two, and we can keep that as her bed till she moves out.

We just moved my daughter to a twin bed on her 2nd birthday. I am expecting #2 in May and wanted to give her some time to adjust, but she LOVES it! She has never once climbed out of it. We put it against one wall and got a rail for the other side. Our crib does convert to a toddler bed, but as I said...we were going to need it in a few months and she is doing awesome in her "big girl bed". I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. Toddler beds are cheaper, but will only last until he's 3 or 4 (depending on how big he is). A twin bed can last for a long time (or even a full if you have the space) and as long as you have rails on it so he can't fall off, then he should be fine. All kids are different though. I would suggest talking about the "big boy bed" or whatever you want to call it and let him help pick out some fun sheets for it. That may help to get him excited about it. You also want to make sure that his room is completely baby proofed since he will be able to get out of it if he wanted to.

Best of luck!

Twin Bed..Toddler Bed just a waste of money since you will need the twin in a year or two anyways. What we did to not make the bed so high instead of a box spring we bought a bunk bed board. It just the board that goes under the mattress on a bunk bed. It has worked great and the bed is not to high my 16 month old even climbs up there to nap with sissy. I have also never had to use rails on the side of the bed because even if she fell off its such a short fall she would not get hurt.

Skip the toddler bed. My son had a crib that converted to a toddler bed and we only used it for about a month. He sleeps in a full-size bed and loves it. My sister bought a toddler bed for her daughet and ended up returning it after 2 nights.

We actually were in the same situation and moved our then, 18 month old, to a full sized bed without the box springs...she has done great. Both our girls have done well. WE did put a piece of board under the mattress as the foundation but it was only an inch or so thick..so the height of the bed is not too high. I am glad we have done it this way so we do not have to transition again.

twin beds all the way. We bought while our twins were still in their cribs, so we could practice and not lose tons of sleep. We actually got the inexpensive beds at walmart with drawers in the bottom. This was suggested because the whole "monster under the bed" wouldn't be an issue! It has been wonderful!!! Plus, we have twins beds for as long as those beds will last. The toddler beds are cute, but if you don't need to buy one I wouldn't do it. Our children loved the twin beds. It also gave us more room to sit with them if sick, read stories, or they could even nap together if they wanted.

Our children are 16 months apart and we just went on and bought another crib for our son. It seemed so much easier at the time and I am so glad we did. My daughter now 27 months just started sleeping in her crib now converted to a toddler bed. We have never had any problems transitioning probably because of her age. If you have to move him from his crib I would probably buy the toddler bed they are so much smaller it seems like they would feel more secure in one. Plus they are probably cheaper than buying a twin bed and the matress/boxsprings.
