Hello Moms, I feel stuck my 9 year old daughter is struggling in school. She is in speical ed right now and it is helpind some what but is still far behind her class mates. I took her into Sylvan to be tested and they sais she needed help in reading, math and comprehnsion. I knew these were the areas she struggled in. As much as I would like to send her for the help we are not able to afford what they suggest she needs it will be well over $8,000. So what I am asking is have any of you tried another afforadable tutoring that works.

K.,
I know you want the best for your daughter. Catching up and learning new skills now are paramount to her future educational success. I recommend Tutor Doctor in Highlands Ranch. ###-###-####. They'll come to your house and do a free evaluation. It's nice for you and your daughter, as the certified tutors will come to your home at your convenience. It's much more individualized and less stressful for all concerned. They work with you, daughter and teacher, no added burden of extra homework, as they follow your daughters current classroom curriculum. The average cost of 6 months tutoring is around $2,000, though your daughters situation might be different. It should still be less expensive than Sylvan. Best of luck to you and your family.

you don't say where you live, so it's hard to recommend a particular person if we don't know what city you are in!
In general however, many schools have tutors to refer you to. A local university Dept of Education may also have college students interested in tutoring aa well.

Talk to her teacher. My husband is a teacher and tutors some of his students on the side for extra money. If the teacher won't do it themselves, they will know of someone who will.

Special Ed or Learning Disabled? Big difference...

You can research on your own and go to Lakeshore and buy tutorial supplies to do this yourself. But you need to know what her disabilities are before you tackle it, or anyone does, for that matter.

Call Martha Dominguez at Mt. Calvary Christian School. She will tutor for $30 an hour and is fabulous at it. ###-###-####

Talk to the Special Education teachers. They may be able to point you to some resources. You may also want to take her to an eye specialist - sometimes problems like these can be traced back to eye problems. If you live in the Denver area, I recommend North Park Vision Center in Westminster.
