It would be a good idea to check with the teacher...she will recommend someone - either a National Honor Society high schooler or a tutoring program in your neighborhood. Teachers and principals of schools have that info and they know your child best.

I suggest you contact your local high school and inquire about getting a student who is involved in NHS (National Honor Society). This would meet a requirement of community service for the student as well as benefit your child. Good luck! D. R.

I don't know which school district you are in. I live in Northville and the Northville High School has an Honors Society. A requirement of membership in that group is that each student do so many hours of 'community service' each semester. I believe that almost any type of 'outreach' in the community counts. Many of these junior and senior students tutor freshman students in high school subjects. I bet however that there would be students delighted to help your 3rd grader. So, I would suggest that you contact your local high school and ask if they have an Honors Society.
Good luck.

Check with your local high school. Alot of the National Honor Society Students need volunteer hours and usually complete them by tutoring.

The Mercy Education Project offers free tutoring and other services for girls and women. (Sorry, I don't know if your child is a boy or girl.) The Mercy Education Project is located in Detroit. Here is a link to the website: www.mercyed.net/office.html - 9k
I also tutor in the Detroit area and am presently accepting new students.

Your best bet would be to go through your school district. They will know the free tutoring services for your area.

I am a teacher in the local metro detroit area. All of these moms are right about the NHS groups at High schools needing to get community service hours. Although, fortunately for you, the state has also instituted a new requirement for graduation for ALL high schoolers that they need community service, so you may also try any of the other clubs in the Schools, like Key Clubs (many NHS kids participate in this group to gain the community service hours) and the olympiad groups. These kids specialize in a particular area of study and compete on a regular basis in their subject specialty. Good Luck!
