Hi ladies- I was diagnosed with vasa previa so I will be having my 3rd baby by csection. I am done having children so I decided to have my tubes tied during my c section. Just wondering if anyone else has been through this and what I should expect. Also was told unless I have to have an emergency c section (will be in the hosp from week 30 on) that I will have a spinal block. Has anyone had that? I am reading about these terrible headaches that can occur and it's making me nervous! Any info will be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

I had only one c-section, with spinal block and no head aches. My sister however, had one that turned really bad because the anesthesiologist didn't do it right, she could still feel so they poked her several times in the back before she went numb and had headaches for a few weeks afterward...

I had my tubes tied and sort have regretted it... there has been many times I wanted to have another one, which my doctor said to be very certain when I did it. I wish now I would have waited, however, I don't know if I could really handle more kids some days...

I had my tubes tied last year at Plainview Hospital. I had the C-section at Good Sam. The catholic hospitals won't do the C-section and the tubal at the same time. Just something to keep in mind.

I had the spinal block for both the C section and the cervage (at 13 weeks pregnant) and then I was put out for the tubal. I never had a headache, only felt very numb for a few hours.

If you have a medical condition that could affect yours or the baby's life, you're making a smart decision. I have a heart condition and was only able to have my son before having the tubal. Consider what you have to be a blessing :)

I've had 2 c-sections and had spinal blocks with them both. I didn't have any complications from either. The numbing medicine that they put in before they administer the block hurt worse than the actual block.
When you go into the operating room, they'll have you sit on the table. They usually have you lean forward on to someone. They'll swab your back with betadine, then administer the numbing medicine (not the block, but a local that numbs the area). It will feel like a really intense shot. BREATH! BREATH! BREATH! Once that area is numb, they'll administer the spinal block. For me, it feels really really warm. It doesn't work all at once, it's very gradual, at least it was for me. They'll start to prep you for surgery. You'll lay on your back, they strap your arms down (so you don't pull out IVs, or the sheet or touch anything that's sterile). You'll also wear an oxygen mask.Your SO or whomever you choose, can be in the room with you the entire time. The anesthesiologist will monitor your blood pressure, medicine, nausea, etc. I always get nauseous after the spinal, but they give me something right away. I tried to tough it out with my first and it was rough. I almost threw up. Just tell the anesthesiologist and they'll get you something in your IV. The surgery is pretty quick, maybe an hour from start to finish. Depending on the hospital and the condition of the baby, they might let you have your child in the recovery room. With my first, they took her to the NICU because she was early. My husband went with her. With my second, as soon as she was cleaned off, they let my husband hold her. We had her with us the entire time. If there's a chance that you might have the baby early, I'd have someone on stand by. When my husband went to the NICU with our 1st daughter, my mom sat with me in the recovery room.
After your surgery, USE YOUR PAIN MEDS! The first time I was trying to be Superwoman, the next time I knew better!
Good luck! Wishing you a happy and healthy little baby!

I have had 3 c-sections. With the first it was an emergency so I was already on an epidural. With the other 2 I had a spinal block and liked it so much better than the epidural. You get it the the same way by bending forward and having the needle inserted. You'll feel just a small prick and then it feels kind of cold. It wears off a lot faster than the epidural so you are are able to move your legs not long after surgery. I am having my 4th c-section in Nov. and will also be getting my tubes tied. My dr. said it doesn't change the recovery of a regular c-section.
Edited to add: I am prone to migraines and never had a headache as a result of a spinal. A headache can occur if any of the spinal fluid leaks but I have never had it happen. I only know one person they had a headache after and she had to lay flat for a few hours.

I had a spinal block with my 1st c-section and I thought it was a better pain-management method and did not have any ill effects from it.
