Hi,
I'm expecting my second child in May and am considering having a tubal ligation performed after the birth. My question is - how painful is the incision point after the surgery? Is there much discomfort afterwards? If so, for how long? I don't want to throw a lot more pain onto childbirth recovery.

What can I do next?

I've heard its more the gas they have to put in you that hurts more then the incision.

Also bear in mind that if you deliver in the Mercy system they do no allow Tubal's there (I just found this out planning a tubal with this repeat c/s and my OB told me)

I was like DUH I should of known CATHOLIC hosp..

Hi E.,

I too have two children and had a tubaligation performed after the birth of my son in December 1993. I recommend it because I did not want anymore children and I did not want to take birth control or use any birth control methods for the remainder of my reproductive years. The procedure took about 1 hour and I was up and around by 12:00 noon. There were two incisions which required the smallest sized bandaid over the incisions, one at the belly button and the other down by the bikini line. No pain at all. The only drawback I found, was it will put you into an early menopause, which I am experiencing now in my life at the age of 45. I am sure that everyone is different, but I know I made the right decision for myself.

I had mine done during my c-section after my second set of twins. We were definately done having kids. I can't give advise on the pain associated. I don't want to discourage you, but I have experienced the most horrible periods after doing this. I don't know if this happens to a lot of women, but they have been extremely heavy and the cramps are so painful that I have to take pain medication. I wasn't like that before. I've had some mild sadness about not being able to have more children. WE dont want anymore but it's still sand sometimes becuase I cant. BUT on the bright side, my hubby and I can do what ever, whenever becuase we don't have to worry about the birth control.

I had it done and overall the procedure went well and I have had no complications and I had it done in Feb 2007. My belly area hurt for a bit but that was it. I had to have it done in a surgery center because I too had all my kids at Mercy. I too wanted it done after giving birth too.
But to get it done , there is paperwork to fill out and most doctors like to wait 6 weeks after post partem. Just my experience. I heard it from doctors in roseville to carmichael.

Hi E.,

During the end of my second pregnancy my husband and I discussed if we wanted more kids. We were too sure, but I knew I didn't want birth control. I had a really hard labor which ended in a c-section at the last minute. When the doctor put me on the table he asked me "while I'm in there do you want me to tie you tubes"? I said NO! I went back 1 year later and had it done. I can't remember the pain after the baby(too happy i had a little one to hold again) but I do remember the pain from my tubal ligation. I do remember getting up and around faster from the pregnancy. But I will tell this my periods and cramps are stronger than before. Hope any of this helps.

I had it done during my c-section at Mercy SW in 2004. I would STRONGLY recommend reserching other options.

After the procedure, at the age of 29, I experienced signs of menopause:
Hot flashes, mood swings, fatigue, migraines that required morphine shots to stop the pain, anxiety, and spotting.
I went through two years of tests and three well-known male doctors of different specialities whom all refused a simple hormone test, all because "you're too young". After one visit with a female doctor & having one blood test it was determind that it was hormonal. I am 33 yrs old & have been on Hormone Replacement Therapy for the last 17 months. My last migraine was 16 months ago. My husband now wishes he had the Vasctomy.
Good Luck!

I had a tubal ligation after my second child and I don't remember it causing me any more pain in my recovery than after my first daughter was born. It didn't effect my periods (which just being pregnant alone can change periods) but it allowed me to have much greater levels of sexuality than I ever had prior! I have no regrets, yet I do have to admit, that I now have had my tubes reconnected to try for a third since my circumstances have changed dramatically.
I would suggest doing some soul searching and be clear because no one but you really knows what will be best for you.
