K., start with searching on the web or calling your local government. Here are the steps I took here in LV (Clark County) to open my business.

1. Fictitious Name
2. City Zoning
3. City License
4. State Tax ID

Your extra step would be the Health Department. I don't have a location, so I never had to deal with anything as far as a location goes. Good Luck. What is your specialty going to be?

K.,
You are getting some excellent advice, please take it. But, consider one thing... are you ready to give up reading for enjoyment, shopping and getting pedicures? Owning a business can be really time consuming in the first 3 years at least. There are classes at the community colleges on owning your own small business. You might check them out.

The best to you and yours.

Hi K. -
I've owned several businesses, although none were bakeries (my cooking ability is sad). But my advice to you is that you should work in a bakery that you admire for at least six months before starting your own. This will allow you to understand the inner workings of a bakery and find out how the owner established it and keeps it running.

Then you will be more confident in starting your own gig. It is a lot of work and careful planning, but I always prefer being my own boss...

Good luck to you! - L.

Greetings ~ You first need to do a lot of research. Do you have any bakery experience? Are you looking to open a store-front or doing wholesale baking? Do you need your own shop and equipment or can you start by renting time in a restaurant kitchen? Part of your research would be to visit shops (competition) in the area that you are looking to open and see what sets them apart and what you will do to set yourself apart. Also, see if there is someone who can mentor you (look into your local SCORE chapter - these are retired professionals who help mentor new business owners FREE). And start writing a business plan. Pre-children, I was in the restaurant and catering business and can tell you that it is a lot of work (can be fun, but takes a lot of time). Good luck on following your dream!
