Trying to Choose Between Ergo and Patapum Carrier

I would like to upgrade from the Moby Wrap to another carrier for my 9 month old daughter. We walk the dog everyday and the Moby Wrap is great, but not as convenient now that she is bigger. I am very petite and have had trouble in the past with other carriers not fitting right. I really want something that will last overtime and provide adequate support. Does anyone know if either the Ergo or Patapum fits people with smaller frames?

What can I do next?

I have not tried the Patapum carrier, but I can definitely vouch for the Ergo. My sister-in-law and I are both 5'2" and we looooove the Ergo carrier. It's really adjustable, so if other people (husband, grandparents, etc...) want to use it they can!

I can only give enthusiastic recommendation for the Ergo, but neither of the wearers is petite (I am 5'8"; husband 6').

We switched from the Moby Wrap to the Ergo Carrier about 1.5 months ago. It is fantastic. We also have a 9 month old daughter, and she loves it, I love it, and her dad really loves it. We use it for walking around the neighborhood, hiking, bus riding, etc. She regularly takes a good snooze while snuggled inside. And we've discovered that her dad can wear it inside his winter coat and keep her good and warm in subzero weather.

The Ergo works great for a lot of people. I think it lasts longer than the Patapum because there is additional padding and there is just one size. The patapum has two different sizes. Also, the Ergo has more padding and while you might not need that now, when your little one is 2, you probably will. The Ergo is pretty adjustable, my 13 year old niece wore my 2-1/2 year old on a hike last summer, as well as my 6' tall husband. I'm 5'2" and "round" and absolutely love it. It really distributes the weight evenly onto your hips - similar to a frame backpack, but without the added weight and bulkiness. You can wear your baby on the front, back, or hip position with the Ergo.

I do carry these in my store (www.CozyBabyBoutique.com) and have a 30 day 100% full money back guarantee. You can return it for any reason (assuming you haven't abused it or run over it with a truck or something). Of course, you're welcome to try it on first, but often people want to try it out for a couple weeks first so that's why I offer the money back guarantee.

Let me know if you need any more help!

I highly recommend the Hotsling. I'm 5 feet tall with a 14 month old (22lb) baby girl. She and I have used the Hotsling since she was 4 months old. It's a great, convenient and trendy carrier. It can hold your baby in different positions as she grows older. Hope this helps and good luck.

Have you looked at the Kozy Carrier? It fits all sizes of people and is a little more comfortable than the Ergo (in my opinion). I use mine with my nine month old daughter all the time and my sister-in-law (who is petite also) uses hers with her 21 month old son. My husband's cousins still use theirs with their 21 month old 30 pound son! If you are used to the Moby you'll have no problem figuring out the Kozy. If you are planning on more kids it is wonderful front carrier as well. Check it out: http://kozycarrier.homestead.com/

Hello,

I would highly recommend the Ergo, it is very flexible and fits all sizes. I have a 14 month old and it is one of the few items we actually purchased before her birth. We have used all the time and LOVE it!!

enjoy...

Why not get a good backpack that's built for your frame? You can still use the Moby for around the house, etc., but the backpack is great for longer journeys. REI has a great selection...My daughter loves the backpack (and the sling!).
good luck!

ERGO! Best $100 we've spent since our daughter was born! Comfortable, easy to use, and both my husband and I can wear it. We use to have a Myan sling & our backs would ache... now it's like wearing a backpack and all the weight is on the hips. Excellent for baby too since her weight is beared on her thighs not her crotch like other carriers.

Hi Jen - I LOVE my Ergo. I am 5' 1'', and my husband is 6'3''. It fits both of us - it puts most of the weight on your hips with nice wide padded straps. We started using it when our daughter was 10 months old and weighed 16 lbs. Now she is 2 and weighs 25 lbs. You can carry your daughter in front, on the side, or on your back. It has a nice little hood that shelters her from rain, nosy strangers, and keeps her head up if she falls asleep.
We ordered directly from the manufacturer in Hawaii... it comes with a helpful DVD to show you how do set up the various positions.

I use the Ergo and I love it. My husband is a tall guy with broad shoulders and I am on the small side of average. I like the Ergo because we can both use it comfortably. I also like it because I can wear my son on the side, back or front. It can get a little sweaty in warm weather, but I imagine any other carrier is the same way. I've never tried the patapum so I can't make any comparisons. Good luck!

I LOVE my Ergo!!! I'm only 5'2" and have no problem with it. I bought mine in a store in downtown Olympia and was able to put it on (with my daughter in it) and walk around for a bit to see if both of us liked it. We did.

I moved from the moby to the ergo and i LOVE it! it distributes weight very very well. now the moby feels awful. (my little one is 7.5 months). I'm 5'5" and 115lbs so not super small frame but it fits me great as well as my husband and father in law who is 6'6". so obviously it is very versatile!

ergo packs seem to work well for those mamas that are not petite. I am by far not petite, but did not find them comfortable, in fact had great back pain associated with it. On the other hand I had a friend who is almost 6' and she loved it. Good luck to you!

If you have a small frame I would really encourage you to try and borrow an Ergo before you buy one, We have one and it has been great, however it is great because my husband uses it. I am only 5'2" tall and have narrow shoulders. The Ergo always slips off my shoulders and I have had to pin the moveable straps to the shoulder straps to be able to use it. That's fine, but then I can only use it in the front position. As a backpack it would go across my neck where I have pinned it! That being said, we packed it withour 2 year old all around Italy last summer and that way we didn't have to bring a stoller. I know some stores will let you try it out, but I would see if you know someone who will let you borrow it for a couple of weeks to see how it works for you first. I don't know anything about the other type of pack. Good Luck!

The ergo baby carrier has only one size. If you live in Olympia area, you can come and try our demo in the store. I have seen Ergo fit for people from 4'11 to 6"8. The company is run by these ladies ( moms) in Hawaii. Come and check it out. I have put my youngest, 5 going on 6, and he still is fine in the carrier. I have to say that this is the best carrier I have ever tried. I wish I had it when the kids were little. It's quick and easy to put on and it's has received all positive response from the customers. The store opens at noon today. m.w.f. 10-5:30, Tues & Thurs 12-6, Sat 10-4) It's right next to Wagner's Bakery on Capitol way. ###-###-####
We will help you try it on and you can walk around the store for as long as you want. There also is a calender from company made with pictures parents have sent in - it's fun to look at where people have taken the Ergo. Just come on in!
Take care.
Hope your search goes well.

Hi Jen,
I am short (5'2") too. I have found the Patapum to be very comfortable. I read a lot on the internet about the Ergo vs. the Patapum before I purchased mine, and much of what I read said that the Ergo worked better for taller people.
Happy walking and Good luck,
T.

I don't have any experience with the Patapum, but have LOVED my Ergo. It's very comfortable, even with my 28lb 2yr old. There is a bit of a learning curve, but think that is with most carriers. I'm sure fit wouldn't be an issue since it is easy to adjust once it's on.

Jen,
I have a 11 m old dd who weighs about 21 lbs. I bought a used patapum from thebabywearer.com it was ok for me. I am 5'5" and about 140 lbs. Then I found www.myfavoritebabycarrier.com who offers the ergo with free shipping and 90 day unconditional moneyback guarantee. I ordered it Friday morning and had it on Monday. I decided I didn't have anything to loose by trying it. It fits so much better for both my husband and I. I would not trade it for anything. I wish had found it with my other two. We have worn her for up to 3 hours at a time at this point with no problems.

I love our ergo. Because of the way it is designed it takes the weight off of the shoulders which is nice especially with a bigger child.
