I had the gastric-bypass and this is one of the side effects. My dietitian told me to eat Kashi products. They have the most fiber than any other crackers, cereal, cookies, etc. They are more expensive, but they do work!
My daughter is 3 1/2 and since birth she has had such a hard time going poop! She gets really bad stomach cramps and it will take days for her to finally get it out! I took her to the dr on Mon and they did an X-Ray and he said that her entire tummy was full of bowel. So she is on this powder that we put in her juice everyday and then had an emema that we give her 2 times a day. (This is not a fun thing to do as a parent) But things are not going well. She has been on this since Mon and still not much poop to report. I was just wondering if any of you have gone through this and what you did. Is there something that we have missed. The dr said that if she starts to have a regular bm it will still take a few weeks to get all the poop out!

Hey there A.
I know exactly what you are going through. My daughter had the same problem. With her, it was a slight allergy to dairy products that did it. We had to watch how much dairy she got and how much other foods that would plug her up as well. Banana's, dairy and white bread (and white bread products) will all plug her up more!!! You probably already knew that, but I just wanted to let you know what we had to work around... A warning, if you take her off of dairy completely, remember that to get her back on you need to wean her on to it slowly, otherwise it can be very painful and make her very sick to get it back into her system.
Good luck, let me know if you have other questions that I might be able to help you with!
I have a 3.5 yr old daughter who had the same problems. It started before she was one but I was always told it was due to breastfeeding. At her 1 yr check up I talked to her pedi about it and how painful and large her stools were. He put her on Mirlax which we would put in her juice if it had been 3 or more days. It worked for a bit but then she started having problems again so we put it in her juice daily for 3 months. At that point (age 2.5 or 3) she had become scared of the pain and was no longer a physical problem but a fear problem. Once we started giving it to her daily and being very encouraging in the bathroom she got over her fear. At one point the pedi (I think her 3 yr wcc) asked her to try to poop everyday even if she can't go she should try for 5 min everyday. She listened to him and would try for a bit. She now will go every couple of days on her own but on occasion we still need to reminder her to try. The other thing I was told I could give her was a tsp of MOM as needed. We had some family stress 2 weeks ago and she got bounced around different grandparents homes with I am sure the not best diet choices and she got backed up again. I just up a little Mirlax in her juice and told her it was to help soften it up and make it easy for her to go and she did.
It may take a couple of days before you see your little on pooping after taking the med. I think when we started giving it it took about 3 days for results.
Hope this helps

My daughter has a mild case of this, meaning we go for 2-3 days without a BM and then she has a rock in her diaper. Some of the things that work for me are, warm bathes often as possible. If you stay home, try more then once a day. Prunes are a God send, and they work wonders too, Gerber has some that are delicious, according to my daughter, I forgot to say she is 2 and has had the troubles since birth as well. Tummy rubs help too. Have you ever watch a mother cat with her babies, she licks their tummies until they poop. I am not saying to lick it, just a firm, yet gentle rubbing on her tummy does help. Good Luck!
That is probably Miralax or the generic that they are having you put in her juice. My 4 year old son has been on it for over a year and my daughter was even on it for awhile. I can take a few days for it to start working so I wouldn't be too discouraged yet and what we have found is that you have be consistant with it even after things start moving. If we miss a couple of days worth of the powder, he is all backed up again.
Good luck.

Hi my name is K., I have a 10 yr old boy that has had problems going number 2, It started about 3 yrs old when he experienced a hurtful BM, The Dr called in Fecal witholding, If they experience a painfull poop, that they have the control to hold it, and that is how they get so backed up, and they will hold it in fear that it will hurt, I have struggled with him not going for a long time, and going to the Dr to do fleet enemas, and now he is regularly on the powderd muralax, daily, a cap a day in flavored water or Kool-aid, he now has realized that he can poop without hurting, but he has struggled with it for a long time now. as a matter of fact I just had him at the Dr a week ago, and they did a xray and he was extremely impacted. So I think it is just something you just need to keep an eye on it. All I can say is good luck
My son had the same exact problem. Right from the time that I brought him home from the hospital. I had to stimulate him when he was an infant with a rectal thermomiter. He started holding it in because he was afraid that it would hurt and he wouldn't go for days!! I asked the doctor and he just said give him fiber. He is 10 and finally grew out of it at about 8. What worked for us was Senacot mixed with prune juice. I would give him the senacot every other day. The prune juice daily. Also I would mix fiber (I cant remember what it was called, sorry) in his oatmeal. I know how stressful this can be but hopefully she will grow out of it like my son did.
I used to babysit a little boy who had a really hard time pooping for several years. What finally worked for them was this all natural juice from to tropics. His parents swear by it & had such great results that they sold it for quite some time, like amway or mary kay. Anyways it was called NONI JUICE it reminded me of prune juice. But he doesn't have problems anymore. I remember feeling soo bad for him he knew he needed to poop & really wanted to, he would sit on the toilet & cry for hours because it hurt so bad & wouldn't come out! Just a suggestion, thought it might work for you as well as it did for him. Good Luck! A.
My son had problems with BMs as a baby when he was first eating solids, he was so backed up that we had to take him to the Emergency room, and it sounds like your daughter is going through the same symptoms. He contintued to have problems for a few months but we put him on prune juice at that realy got things moving, now he eats bran muffins regularly also. but one of the other things that people told me to do that works in babys that might work in older kids is using dark Karo syrup and mixing it with her juice or milk. But mainly you just need to train her digestive system to do its job and there are lots of things to help do that. If you need recipes for high fiber good tasting food, you can write me back. I was a cook by trade befor I decided to stay home with my son, but I'm virtualy an encyclopedia of recipes. Hope she gets better, no one like to be backed up.
Ok hun I have the same thing with my 5 year old.. But he has no control over it.. HE was on the powder stuff and it didnt work to control his bm his stomach is full also he is conspated and its like water all the time and the reason for that is because he has pockets on his colon and the poop is getting stored in there. WE have done everything... Lately things have been getting a little better not so many accidents but he wont go for like 3 days and when he does its not nice....
Try giving her prunes wheat, lower her sugar intake,. lots of protein and rice and things that have all the nurtients in there. the hole enma thing that you have to do I did it once and I WILL NEVER EVER DO IT AGAIN,,, I think its the drs.. job that is what they get paid for.... Not to sound gross but when it comes out is it hard and does it hurt her.. If so maybe to much Iron cause that can cause alot of conspation.... Logan had back up bm to the point when I gave him that med.. HE THREW BM UP. HE is only 5... Keep with the med.. and see what the outcome will. Maybe ask the dr. for stool softern for her I had some stuff I cant think of the name of it but you can buy it over the counter at a drug store.. ITs a syurp... I was able to use Kyro syurp on my baby when she couldnt go.. ANd it loosen them out so she could go.. Get a second oppion also.. Cause this is becoming more common then they think.. YOu and I know about 5 other people that has been on that white powder med... there kids actually had to go in for a milk of mom edma and they get admitted to the hosptial they take x rays of the tummy then they will detrimed how much to give them and then they give it and wait till there are all done and cleaned out... Another x-ray and then if they need another one they will give it to them.. THis little person ending up going over 10 pounds of bm.. ITS SICK TO read about it.... But she is on the WHite stuff and she is going on a regular bases... SHE lost 10 pounds but that is how bad she had it.. I am trying to get my child to have the cleaning out treatment and go from there but the drs. are saying no at this time well my oppion he starts up again HE WILL HAvE IT DONE>>
so I hope this helps ok... hang in there and time will work out for you......
limit cheese, banananas, ... change the diet may help. My SIL has that issue with her kids and they love cheese- so her deal to get over the fear- is they get a piece of cheese after going... it helps-- she also has become very creative at other foods that help encourage it-- she makes a pineapple/cranberry salad her kids love with cans fo the fruits and it helps them immensley== she has had them drink castor oil, prune juice, etc..
We had a similar problem with my son. Is the powder mixture you are using Miralax? It didn't work for my son and it hasn't worked for a friend of mine's daughter. They finally had us start using mineral oil. It worked real good. Now when he gets bound up, we just give him a TBLS of it in his juice, choc. milk, or small portions of applesauce. He drank it right up with no problem. If nothing works for you, you might want to ask about the scope. I know it might be miserable but they put the child out so it's not so bad. Good luck to you!!
Try looking up in your area a colonic therapist. Some people will do colonics on children that young. It will completely clean out her bowel better than 10 enemas. Then once her bowel is cleaned out it might be able to function normally. They are painless and just use a steady stream of water to "flush" it out. It can be gross and maybe uncomfortable, but it is better than the cramping that your daughter is going through.
A tablespoon of mineral oil after every meal will do the trick!
Our oldest had the same problem and it solved it!

I have two boys and both have experienced this. the doctor told me it was do to their diet and them just not eatting enough to empty their bowel each day. They put both my boys on Magnesium Citrate. It is a liquid that i just add to their morning glass of juice. They had my give them 4oz. to start with to cleam them out and then we were able to back off to 1 oz. a day. It softens the bowel movement to it can come out. But watch out when you give them the large amount because it has the opposite effect and they will spend the day in the bathroom to make sure it is all out.
my boys are doing great now with being on it. You can buy it over the counter at Walmart. It is less then 2.00 a bottle and works great. A plus is no enama's. i know those are no fun. Hope all goes well.
This may sound goofy but it worked on my kids and even on my cat! Spend some time doing a massage of the colon. Stroke her tummy upwards on her right side, across just under the rib cage, and down on her left. You can probably feel the full colon. The massage will stimulate the colon and get things moving. Hope it helps! Do this along with the Miralax. Good Luck!
Give her a drop of black strap malasses mixed in w/ a sm. amt. of drink (formula, water, etc.) or sm. amt. of food. This works great! I'm not sure IF it will help your child or not. But it works. It may take a couple of doses (give or take) to get the effect.
You can find black strap malasses at a health food store. You might be able to find it in the Organic section a some grocery stores (maybe). But I do know you can find it in the Natural / Health Food Store.
HOpe this helps.
My niece has trouble passing stools. The Doctors have told them to increase her fiber to help and also to give her metamusel (spelling) at lease once a day to help regulate her and keep her constant. This has helped tremendously.
I have and I know how frustrating it can be to see your child strain to go and you can't do anything.
My doc recommended Mineral oil. It not only softened the stool, it made him want to go. Make sure she eats vegies and fruits, perferably fresh. And you can give her two ounces of prune or cranberry juice every day and that will help too.
I had to use enemas and now, I give him raisins for a snack everyday. It seems to help. My son had this problem so bad that a few times he'd bleed. He's stop going and then get backed up even more. We weren't able to make him quite going in his pants until he was five and a half.
She could be allergic, mildly to dairy. That's what we found out with my oldest. He loved cheese (still does, actually) and it made the problem worse.
Good luck!!!
