Trouble Settling on One Formula

Hello, I am having a problem with my formula. I have to first admit, that I have been the problem, let me explain. My son is going to be 9 weeks old this Friday; I breast fed him exclusively for the first 5 weeks then started incorporating formula. He always seemed gassy, even when I breast fed. A girlfriend of mine who had a baby the same time I did said her pedi. told her to use the Enfamil w/soy. Since I received this as a free sample, thats the one I started him on. However, he still seemed fussy and gassy. I then took it upon myself to switch formulas. I did this because when we ran out of the sample and I had to purchase formula I started reading all the labels and there were so many different kinds, lactose free, soy, fussy baby formula broken down etc...!!! I settled on two: lactose free and a soy, never thinking that these are two completely different products and could be causing him an upset tummy. It wasn't intentional, I was just trying them out. I have now been told by many friends to just put him on a normal milk-based formula, give him a few weeks to get used to it and see how that goes. Could all this switching be causing him tummy aches ?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies ! You all told me what I already had known, stop switching and let him get used to one formula ! I am going to try him on the Good Start and in a few weeks once the transition is over I'll let you all know what happened !

My son (who will be 8 weeks tomorrow) had a similar problem. Even though I did not breastfeed, I had to change his formula to the Enfamil Gentlease Lipil. This is for fussy/gassy babies. I did have to give him Mylecon drops for a while to ease up the gas through the transition. He has been doing great on it for the past 3 weeks.

Hope this helps!

I don't know if its upsetting your babies tummy but what i do know is that my son was the same way!!. Talk to your doctor about switching your baby to Nutramigen(dont know if i spelled it right, my son is 8, its been a while..lol). it was a little pricey 8 years ago but it worked great for the gas. Good luck!

We had similar issues and found out our baby had acid reflux and had to be on medication and a lactose free formula.Tends to be very common in babies these days. Be careful and consult a doctor. It may not be as easy as just changing formulas.
Good luck.

Congratulations on your baby boy! Regarding your problem, unfortunately, I think most babies go through this gassy phase beginning around 6-8 weeks -- their bodies are still getting used to being in the outside world and I have talked with many friends who said that nothing they did (switching formula, using gas drops, etc) reduced their babies gas and discomfort. They just have to get through this phase. My daughter, who is now 1, went through this too from 7 weeks to 11 weeks. I tried everything. Then all of a sudden around 11-12 weeks, her gas disappeared and she was so much happier and more comfortable. Good luck --this too will pass! (no pun :)

I definately believe there is a possibility you could have made him worse. I am a nurse that has worked a few years with pregnant moms and newborns, and I will definetly tell you that switching up formula abruplty can surely make a baby coliky. I first must tell you that it is not wise to change a baby's formula without the doctor's OK or suggestions first, your baby could develop a tolerance for certain things in the formula or allergies. That being said, you could try the suggestions of the other friends and give him milk-based formula for at least a month and see how that works. If he is still very gassy, spitting up and fussy then you could try the good start soy formula. I am making these suggestions from my personal experience with my now 3 year old daughter. Good luck let me know how it turns out.

Carnation Good Start is a very good formula. My son who is now 8, was started out on Enfimil. That was not good for him. I breastfed him for a yr. and supplemented with formula because I worked full-time. When I switched him to Good Start, he was tolerating it so much better than Enfamil.

To answer your question, YES... NEVER EVER EVER switch formulas like that. Specially between different types. First of all you should consult your pediatrician when switching, secondly to switch you have to do it gradually. All this switching adds a lot of discomfort to the baby. Before switching again, please call the pediatrician and explain and follow his/her advice.

The gas could also come from you! Yep, when you breast feed everything you eat still affects the baby. Eating things like garlic, onions, even broccoli can cause your little guy to get gas. It happened to my girls too, but I just gave them a little of the Mylcon drops (antacid for infants) cause I love garlic! It worked. When I started incorporating formula I used Good Start by Carnation. It was gentler & they seemed to like it better & be less fussy than any of the others. Be careful with all the switching you're doing, yes that could be part of the the cause for his troubles! Talk to your Dr. Good luck!

Try goat milk, it's much healthier and will give your baby less gas, you should also (if you are into this) try elimination communication - it's possible that your baby just wants to go to the bathroom - try holding him over the sink or the potty. there is a good book to read called "diaper free".

Good morning. Try not to switch the formula so much. I would use what ever your doctor recommends. There is a great bottle that I recomend that you try for gas. Dr. browns bottles are the absolute best when you have a gassy baby. By the second day your little one should feel a lot better.... Good luck, L. P.S. I used regular simalic with iron....

Hi J.,
my son went through the exact same thing. Except for the breast milk. Enfimil can make a baby sooooo gassy. My pedi suggested Good Start by carnation . It worked. The other suggestion I have is camamil tea. That helped alot as well.

hi, i had alot of trouble getting my son on the right formula. his pedi told me that when i try different formulas i need to give it at least a week to two weeks for the baby to adjust. maybe if you are changing them sooner than that, maybe it can cause an upset tummy? just a thought..hope he feels better soon!

Hi J.,
I have a 10 month old boy. He was very gassy from day one, I actually had a lot of trouble breast feeding. The hospital gave him soy formula in-between my feedings. In the beginning it seemed to help. As the weeks went on I noticed he was in pain everytime he had to poo, so I investigated every fromula-very overwhelming!!! to many choices. I decided on Good Start.
As soon I switched the pain went away, but he remained gassy and continued to spit-up quite a bit. He never lost any weight and was not in pain and he liked the formula. I say take him off the soy. good luck. I hope i could help.

My son is 6 months old now but I had the same problems with him starting at 5 weeks also. I was breastfeeding and he had some supplemental Enfamil Lipil bottles. He was MISERABLE. I mean he screamed almost constantly until he was purple. I switched to Enfamil soy and he was better but after a few weeks I thought he could better. I switched to Enfamil Nutramigen but it seemed like all he did was have explosive bowel movements every half hour, so we went back to soy. All along I was consulting with my pediatrician b/c I was really concerned about milk protein intolerance and milk allergies. One thing my pediatrician did say was to STOP making so many switches so quickly. He said by son would probably just grow out of any gassy issues b/c a babies digestive tract takes a while to mature and that any signs of allergies would be more obvious. We did all sorts of tests to rule out infection and the next step was to see a pediatric gastro. We decided not to do that. He's still on soy and while he still gets gassy, he does expel is easier and for the really difficult gas pains that still popped up we gave mylicon. Looking back I wish I never stopped breast feeding but like my pediatrician said "we didn't have a crystal ball to know." I'd guess the bottom line I'm trying to suggest not making anymore changes to your babies diet though b/c that could be giving him some problems. Thats what I was doing. Pick one and stick with it to give his body time to adjust and consult your pediatrician about your concerns. Mylicon really works and fast - its ultimatley baby gas x. Not sure if any of this helps you but I know its a frustrating, upsetting circumstance when theres feeding issues.
