Trouble at Bath Time

My 16mo daughther used to love bath time, but for the past few months, she will not even sit in the tub. I try to get her to sit with her bubbles and toys, but she will scream and insists on standing the whole time. So, I tried giving her a shower, and that didn't go over too well, either. Any suggestions to make this a fun, relaxing time again?

What can I do next?

This happened to my daughter, but I figured out it was because when we went to my Mom's house on vacation, she didn't have a tub mat and my daughter slipped a little while in the tub and it scared her. It took a really long time before we were able to get her into the tub again at home. So, do you have a mat in the bottom of the tub so that she doesn't slip? If not, I would try that. Also, I had to get in the tub with my daughter for a few nights and let her sit in my lap so that she felt safe again. Ulitmately, she did get used to it again and she is fine now. I sang to her a lot in the tub too...this helped to distract her. Since I don't know what set off this dislike of the tub with your daughter, it's hard to say what will fix it, but I know how frustrating it is. Good luck!

My son went through the same thing. We just had to do the best we could with him screaming the whole time. Then one day he just stopped. Can't wait for my daughter to go through the stage next. :)

Try to not put bubbles in it. When I was little, my mom stopped using bubbles because I guess it was irritating my girl part. Some little girls can't take bubble baths.

Hope that helps!

Have no fear, you are not alone!! What I have decided is to give my 17 month old son a bath while he stands:) I run a little water as normal, put the toys in, and take a cup with me to rinse him off. There is no more conversation about it, I figure someday (soon I hope) he will realize that sitting and playing is more fun, but until then I let him do what he wants. He is my 3rd of 4, so I think I have really learned what battles to pick. Good luck! ~A.~

She could feel insecure. You could try putting her infant tub in the big tub and letting her sit in that. If she doesn't like getting her hair washed, you could try getting her a visor or swim goggles. Or you may just have to bathe her standing up. We struggled with my daughter to wash her hair and finally resorted to pouring the water over her head. She didn't want to lay back. We have been doing it that way for almost four years and she just closes her eyes and counts the pours. I seem to remember she went through a stand up phase as well. Just soap her up and rinse her off, and she can be in and out of the tub in under five minutes. Encourage her to play with water in the kitchen sink or play with her toys over the side of the tub while clothed so she remembers how fun baths can be.
