Hyde Park is fun - the couple blocks around Harper Ave and 57th go all out and the street is closed off for trick or treating.
I was wondering where the best places are to trick or treat in the city. We live in the loop where there aren't as many children so trick or treating doesn't really happen here.

I live in the Beverly neighborhood in the SW corner of the city. There are tons of kids in my neighborhood (many homes have multiple children). Trick or treating here is great! Houses decorate and there are signs that houses get to indicate that they will be accepting trick or treaters, so you know where to go. Tree lined streets with lots and lots of kids in Beverly, Morgan Park and Mount Greenwood (all within close distance of each other).
Malls are great! call your local mall and find out if they are doing anything. I know the harlem and irving plaza in norridge one does it every year they even have times for certain age groups. have fun
I would recommend Sauganash which is in the northwest corner of the city (the edens at Peterson). If you want to come to Evanston, its the first suburb north of the city on the lake. (You can take Metra or the el).
We livbe in Lakeview. We have tons of trick or treaters. Come to the southport corridor(Greenview and Waveland) and you'll have a blast!
Try trick or treating at a nearby mall, alot of the stores distribute candy on Halloween. Or you can always check the park district and local community centers for Halloween parties.
I live in Andersonville and I have to say that this area has the BEST trick-or-treating ANYWHERE! All the houses in the Lakewood-Balmoral area pull out all the stops--lights, music, decoration--even the adults handing out candy dress up! It's a trick-or-treating paradise! The borders are approximately Berwyn on the south, Bryn Mawr on the north, Wayne on the west and Magnolia on the east. It's truly fantastic. The kids and adults alike have a great time. Enjoy!
I live in the West Loop and I believe Skinner Park is going to have some activities planned. Definitely check out www.chicagoparkdistrict.org they have many fun event throughout the month and at the Daly Plaza (where I will probably take my little bumble bee :)
I have a group of SAHM mom friends and we plan on doing something together too, feel free to contact me if you are interested and live in the area.
Most malls have trick or treating durning the day time. Most all stores are ivolved with that also. They also have it at noght time (most malls) but if you can go day time is less traffic.
There is trick or treating the weekend before on Southport (north of belmont up to addison) and in lincoln square usually starting at 11. the businesses and restaurants/bars come out and hand out candy. tons of kids walking up and down the sidewalks. i think lincoln square is sun. this year and southport is sat, but you should check online at their community/neighborhood websites.
enjoy!
Dear Kristin, Is there a Chicago Park near your home? I know most of the Parks have Halloween Parties, that might be an Idea. Also, what my family usually does is one of us have a little Halloween Party for the family. My sisters and her kids come over and we have a light dinner and all of us go Trick or Treating. Have any family members with kids? Invite yourself over. Make it Pot Luck. Good Luck and Happy Halloween!
You could try the Bucktown area or Ukrainian Village. But I would suggest getting together with a friend--even one without kids. A lot of neighborhoods hate having "outsiders" simply because you get someone drop off the kids, they run around and cause problems and are extremely greedy and older kids push the younger ones.
We always went to navy pier.
If you don't mind driving a bit, my neighborhood is AWESOME for trick or treaters. I live in Edgewater. We have 3 blocks where the kids don't even have to go up to the houses, most people set up tables on the sidewalks. Most of the houses decorate, it's great. It's very, very kid friendly. There are a ton of younger kids; I think you'd have a great time. Head north on Clark and make a right on Hood, Glenlake or Norwood. You won't miss it. We even had channel 5 news do a small segment last year. It was quite exciting for the kids.
Try the Dearborn Park II development in the south loop. Its South of Roosevelt and West of State. Very safe area of townhouses and single family homes. We used to live there and got lots of trick or treaters.
Sometimes local businesses host (like Lincoln Square and others), malls, sometimes your Alderman (contact their office), and the Chicago Park District most certainly! Check out the CPD web site and check under "events". Have a great Halloween!
I think trick or treating is really supposed to be a neighborhood thing. The people that I know who live in the loop usually have something organized in the building (or gated community or whatever) where they live, or they go to their local park district, or to shops in their area. Of course, if they have some little friends that live in the 'hoods or the 'burbs, you could talk to thier parents about organizing a little trick or treat party there.
Try Graceland West. Greenview between Irving Park and Montrose
I'd say go to a mall or some other public place.
My friend lives in one of those neighborhoods where lots of "outsiders" go and she has to buy 50 bags of candy a year to "host the event! Why should she have to treat all these people? It's nuts! It's really gotten out of hand!
