I know I have seen this asked before, but i can't seem to find it anywhere. My son is taking an antibiotic for an ear infection (amoxicillin) and i just noticed tonight that he has developed thrush in the sides of his mouth. How do I treat this? It doesn't seem to bother him, but I don't want it to get to that point. Any suggestions?

Call the pediatrician and explain to him or her what had Happened. He may want to change to a different antibiotic. It's one of the side effects of Amoxicillian. Some kids have big reaction to it, some doesn't.

One of my doctors prescribed Nystatin and my son hated it. It smelled horrible and I couldn't imagine it tasted any better. Anyway, I used as directed and after 15 days, he still had the thrush. I used Gentian Violet once and it was gone. Gentian violet is still used today, maybe not by all doctors, but by most. My son's Pediatric Pulmonologist recommended it. Doctors may not tell you about it because they prefer to prescribe Nystatin, but I, who come from a medically based family (mom's an RN and grandpa is a doctor and I went to a pre-med magnet high school) highly recommend what works. Gentian violet costs about $3, it's an OTC, less than any copay, and you can get it at Wal-mart, Target, or any store with a pharmacy. Go to the counter at the pharm and ask for it. I recommend giving him the treatments at bathtime because Gentian violet will not come out if spilled. Also, it will taint your baby's saliva for a while, so anything he sucks on will have a purplish tint.

Gentian violet is the typical treatment- use sparringly & be ready for some laughs as your baby appears to have a 5 o'clock shadow.

I think we used Lactobacillis(sp?). You can also ask your pharmacist.

I second genetian violet, if I remember correctly you don't have to get a perscription for it. I was warned that it would stain anything that it touched but being the clumsy person that I am I ended up dropping the bottle and still have the stains of it on my cabinets so be careful when opening it!

When my son was three months old he had a bad case of thrush caused from the medicine he took through his nebulizer. Our dr. gave him a prescription to put on it and it cleared it up in about 4 or 5 days completly. It was called nystatin. It taste terrible but it was the only thing that worked for him. Hope this helps.

We used the Nystatin with my son when he had it with no problems at all. I've also heard that mylanta helps, but I personally can't stand the stuff, so couldn't bear to give it to him! I got thrush somehow when I was in high school many years ago, and I was prescribed the Nystatin. It doesn't taste bad. It tastes like bananas.

My daughter's pediatrician recommends using plain yogurt to treat thrush. Just apply the yogurt lightly on the thrush area. Good luck!

My son who is now 19 mos. old had thrush probably 5-6 times before he was a year old. My doctor told me that they no longer did gentian violet. We did have the nystatin and then for pain, because he would get it with a vengeance and yes we sterilized EVERYTHING all the time, you give them equal parts of tylenol and mylanta mixed. For us because he was so small the first couple of times, we would do half in one side of his mouth and half in the other. It seemed to help him and it would at least allow him to get his bottles down so that he wasn't starving as well as hurting. Hope this helps...

Hi A.,

I had thrush as an adult and it is VERY painful. I would take him to the pedi just to be sure that's what it is if he's acting like it doesn't bother him, because I didn't even want to swallow my own saliva the pain was so bad. I can't remember the name of the medicine I took but it tasted like banana and the thrush was gone in 3 days.

I would be concerned about too much gentian violet if internal. There is an excellent treatment called Nystatin that you swab inside the mouth and it isn't bad tasting so the babies don't usually reject it. You do need a prescription but it isn't expensive. Also don't forget to sterilize everything with boiling daily that comes into contact with his mouth.

The reason your son has thrush is because the antibiotic killed his 'good' bacteria in his system and allowed Candida yeast to grow in his system. He needs a probiotic to replace the good bacteria. I sprinkle a powder form in my sons rice cereal but I have heard there is also a liquid form for kids that is sold at Sprouts.

I tried everything from Nystatin, brewer's yeast, and yogurt. The only thing that worked was gentian violet. Your pharmacist can order it for you.

Hi A.,

My son had thrush when he was about 11 months old. We gave him some medicine for thrush and it cleared up within a few days. We didn't catch it right away, but we couldn't get him to eat any food with texture. I think it was hurting him to swallow it, or maybe just to have it on his tongue. Now he is over his thrush but he remembers the pain and we are still having a hard time with the food. So, my suggestion would be to call your pediatrician and he or she can probably diagnose it by your report of symptoms. The medicine really helps, and it doesn't hurt to take it even if that's not what it is (so said my doctor).

I just got through dealing with thrush, which lead to a yeast infection in my breast. The yeast infection in my brest was VERY painful. I would highly recommend going to the doctor to get nystatin right away so you and your son can get ahead of the yeast infection. The doctor will give you a cream to put on your breast and a liquid to give to your son. YOu both need to be treated at the same time. Then once the symptoms are seem to be gone, you will need to continue treatment for 2 weeks, just to make sure that all of the yeast is gone. Just to highlight the urgency, it only takes yeast an hour and a half for the yeast to replicate itself. Needless to say, it will spread like wildfire!

Good luck.

I have recently read in "What to Expect the fist year" that thrush can be painful and can interfere with feedings. They say to call your doctor, and that would be my suggestion. I call my doctor's office anytime I have questions and the nurses are always willing to help.

There is a prescription medicine you can get from your pedi. When my son got it, I had to take a soft (baby) washcloth and get it wet with warm water then wrap it around my finger and scrub his mouth where the thrush was prior to giving him the med. Cleaning his mouth was worse than anything. But call your pedi to get some medicine.

Good Luck!

There is a medication called Genetian Violet. You may have to get it by prescription. It is dark purple and will stain his mouth that color but that is what it is supposed to do. Just put a little bit in his mouth it will spread. Don't get it on your clothes because it will stain them to.

My daughter had a lot of ear infections and a lot of thrust due to the antibiotics. Gentian violet is the way to go as far as I am conserned. You DO NOT need an RX for it! You can find it at any drugstore or walmart for about $1.50. Use it carefully. Just take a Q-tip and put a very small amount of violet on. Swab your sons mouth with it just once a day. It kills thrust in like 2 days but it will dye him mouth, and any thing that he slobbers on, purple for a few days. It is really important that you know that it is a coal derivative so be careful!!!!! Don't use to much!!! There is an overdose possibity.
