BRAT diet= bananas, rice, applesauce, toast should work a bit. Watch for reddness on his bottom from the frequent stools. good luck
My 2yr old came down with a nasty cold with an ear infection. My pediatrician prescribed an antibiotic and 48 hours after starting, my son developed diarrhea. It got better after removing fruit and fruit juice from his diet, but it continues at least once a day. I've put him on a very bland diet with yogurt (which is what I put the medication in) and crackers, cheese puffs, and pedialyte. I've offered rice and soup, but he wants nothing to do with it. I give him the antibiotic with yogurt at breakfast and at dinner and then a yogurt with a probiotic supplement I add with his lunch. It seems to have helped a little, but I'm at a loss for what else to offer. Any food ideas to help with the diarrhea?
Thank you for all the helpful responses! I had been using the BRAT diet, but my son was coughing so much while eating (and would cough up the food too!) that it just wasn't working. Now that his cough is gone, I am going back to the BRAT diet. I think the probiotic was a huge help and am so glad I had it on hand. Thankful he's on the mend and for helpful moms on Mamasource!

It sounds like you're doing everything you can, try working in some banana's, maybe some bland crackers, graham crackers if you can.
Pedialyte pops are a good alternative too.
I'm sorry, I hope it's over soon

I usually supply the yogurt a couple of hours after the dose of antibiotics, so that my children have a chance to digest each without them interferring with each other.
Also, try the BRAT diet ~ bananas, rice, applesacue and toast.
Hi, we just went through this too. I found that my son would eat rice, rice cakes, lightly toasted bagels (or toast, different types of beans (lima, garbanzo), sweet potatos, avacados, chicken/turkey. noodles and rice crispies cereal. We tried to stick somewhat closely to BRAT but offered variations. We took him off any acidic foods like tomato sauce and almost all fruits except watermelons and bananas. I hope your guy gets better soon.
Hi! My daughter was plagued with ear infections, and our Dr. told us to put half a packet of "florastat" or "florastar" (I'm sorry - I forgot the spelling of it) in her milk bottle at night. It is a children's anti-diahreal and it works well to off-set any diahrea that results from anti-biotics. Anyway- we bought our supply at Longs Drugs, and it comes in a little navy blue box with Yellow outlines of children on it...good luck!
The antibiotics might be too strong for him or he might need another kind. I had a similar reaction to Zithromax a few years back and I will NEVER take it again! There are plenty of other antibiotics out there to suffer through diarrhea. I would talk to the doctor about it.
In the meantime, I am wondering about the quality of the probiotic supplement and the possibility of giving him a little more.
I also would go with the other moms who suggest the BRAT diet and Pedialyte.
I hope your little one gets better soon!
Try acidophilus or other probiotics. Antibiotics do not discriminate between good bacteria and bad so they are killing the bad bacteria causing his ear infection but also all the good bacteria that helps us digest food and prevent yeast infections. You can get probiotics from yogurt at least 8 oz. a day or there are over the counter supplements for kids ib either chewable or powder that you mix with liquid form. You can get them at your local Whole Foods or helath food store. Tell whomever is working in the vitamin department what you want and your child's age and they will show you exactly what you need. Our doctor reccomends this if we ever take antibiotics eveb for our youngest when she got an eye infection at only ten days old. They work wonerfully.
Bananas! #1 at soothing diarrhea
You need to do the BRAT diet. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and toast (dry). Do only those foods until the diarrhea is better. This will help.
The best cure for diarrhea is called the BRAT diet.
Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast
continue the probiotics.

Hi M.,
I am a wellness consultant. It sounds to me that your son is having a side effect from the antibiotic. It is important to make sure your son is getting enough water and good clean water to stay hydrated.
There are also other ways to help your son to build his immune system so his body will stay healthier.
If you are interested in learning more let me know.
Bananas, rice and hamburger are good foods to help with diarrhea.
Have a good week.

M.,
Bananas and applesauce are also constipating. They may help your son also.

Hi M.,
I've always heard of the BRAT diet to treat diarrhea: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast.
Hope that helps!
My 2 year old had the same problem about three weeks ago. I took out all dairy and gave him a probiotic 3-4 times per day (Florastor - even though it says twice a day, I put it in his water cup each time I filled it). I made rice milk (added probiotic to that, too), gave him yogurt, bananas, apples and toast. He also had a really really bad rash, so he was on an anti-fungal cream and a TON of diaper cream (the really thick stuff). It took a few days, but it that combo really helped.
Have you asked your doctor if it is okay to take antibiotics with dairy products this could be the issue. Hope he gets better but I would check on that.
I would agree except for the applesauce. doctor tells me to use applesauce for constipation so that could make it worse.
banana, rice, white bread and BABY JARRO pro-biotics in water every day...
I'd suggest Jarrow brand acidopholous capsules. (Available at Berkeley Bowl or Whole Foods.) You can let him chew them up, or open the capsules and put it on something he likes.
Bananas usually help with diarrhea.
