Traveling with Toddler Who Still Sleeps in Crib...

My daughter will be just over 2 1/2 when she takes her first trip with me to visit relatives in Colorado. She still sleeps in her crib (VERY WELL) and I'm worried that letting her sleep with me in a hotel bed will ruin that. Are there any other options for me? Has this happened with any of you? Does allowing her to sleep in bed with me going to change anything at home?

Thanks

What can I do next?

Try http://www.babysaway.com/.
We used them many times when my daughter was still in a crib. We always had a wonderful experience and it was so convenient! Good luck and happy travels!

Most hotels provide cribs (call first to confirm.) I would just take her her crib sheets and blanket, if it's not too bulky, from home so that her bedding looks, feels and smells familiar :)

The following phrase:

"Travel Rules!"

Travel rules mean watching tv for several hours in a row (on planes, or in a hotel room)

Travel Rules mean eating food you ordinarilly don't

Travel Rules mean staying up past your bedtime or taking naps at weird times

Travel Rules mean sleeping in different places (bed, countries, planes)

_____

I grew up travelling.
I travelled a LOT with my son when he was little.

Every time something unusual (whether it was finding the parking spot FURTHEST away -to exercise little legs-, or stopping at fast food once a day, or, or, or, or)... you say "Travel Rules!" with a smile.

When you get home, yup, they'll try and get you from time to time to do travel rules at home. Nope! We'll just have to go somewhere!

_______

In my experience kids are REALLY good at differentiating different rules for different places when it's point out to them. In SCHOOL we do this. At GRANDMA'S we do that. On the BUS we do this. At HOME we do that. When we're SICK we do this. When it SNOWS we do that. Ad nauseam. Whe

When we travel, we still take the Pack 'n Play (although he's rapidly outgrowing it!) as well as his familiar bedding, "Sleep Sheep" and "Twilight Turtle" nightlight so everything feels familiar and comforting. I've also let him sleep with me but he'll usually ask me to go back to the crib/P&P after awhile. There were two vacations where he slept in bed for us - only for one night - and it didn't change anything when we came home.

Have a good trip! Try not to worry...I usually found that I worried too much and he ended up being very resilient when we traveled. Try to enjoy!

My son sleeps in his crib as well. So whenever I travel I request for pack-n-play. Most hotels have it but be sure to request it ahead of time so that they keep it ready when you get there.

A pack-n-play was way too small for my son when he was 2 yrs old. When I traveled with him, I was staying with relatives. I made him a pallete on the floor using padding and blankets. I slept in the bed. I did consider having him sleep in the bed with me, but I had the same concern you did - not wanting to return home to hear "I want to sleep with you mom!" I have slept with him a few times at age 2 and 3. Every time it's happened I've reminded him before sleeping that this was a very "special occasion." and that when we got home, he'd go back to his crib (or toddler bed in our case).

Good luck. I think whether or not it changes things at home all depends on the temperment of your child and your ability to follow-thru on what you say. I cannot sleep well with my son b/c he cuddles my neck and I can't fall asleep like that! So I am pretty strict about him sleeping in bed with me. He's learned that when I say no, I mean no, therefore no more arguing about it.

Make sure the hotel has a pack-n-play or a portable baby bed they can set up in the room. Almost all of them offer something.

My son could never sleep with me, even as a baby (still can't at 4 years old). We are just not compatible for that! On our vacations from baby to 3 years old, we used a PeaPod Plus - a little travel tent thing. Worked very well and so easy to bring. It even fit in our suitcase. Friends have borrowed it from us as well. We got ours online from One Step Ahead.

Most Hotels offer roll away cribs...all you have to do is call and ask for one.

Yes, sometimes letting a child sleep with you while traveling will resort in a bit of a bedtime battle when you get back home...depends on the kid though, not all kids have problems with the different sleeping arrangements while on a trip but some do.

If you call the hotel and ask if they have cribs and if for some reason they don't what about taking (or buying a used one) a pack n' play with you...ya know the travel kind of playpens?

Most hotels have crib like cots you can rent in the room.

Also, even if you were able to bring her actual crib... she would still most likely be thrown off her sleeping schedule and routine for a week or so when you get back.

I've traveled a lot and it didn't interfere for us permanently, maybe for a couple of days when we get back in town and try to reestablish our routines.

Pack n Play works great. Most hotels have either a port-a-crib (which is like a pack n play) or a smaller crib that can be brought to your room. Call the hotel you're staying at and ask what they have available. We did a week long trip with twin 15 month olds, and out hotel helped out tremendously. For us, the hard part was our kids were able to climb out, so we had to sleep all week with twins in our bed. It sucked!!

Hi, M.:

Just tell her that y'all are going on a trip to Colorado and will be staying in a hotel and she will have her own bed.

She let her know ahead of time what to expect. I am sure she
is a smart little girl.
Have a good time.

You could rent a crib to use if you're staying with friends or relatives.

Most hotels have cribs and bedding for them. Just let them know what you will need when you make your reseversation. Ask about a refrig and microwave and coffee pot too and you may need extra towels. If they offer a free breakfast what is on the menu, make sure it is toddler friendly.

Call the hotel ahead of time to reserve a pack n' play.
