Traveling with Formula - Arlington Heights,IL

I've never had to travel with a formula fed baby before so I'm clueless. He will drink a 6-8 ounce bottle every 3-4 hours so I know between just getting to the airport and and the flight time he will need two bottles plus if there are any delays etc. Do I just bring a can of formula with me and a couple of empty bottles? Are there any handy travel things I can get to help decrease bulk? I have one of the formula dispensers but it only holds enough for three bottles. I've tried to get him to take a drop in bottle to help alleviate bulk but he just keeps playing with the nipple and I don't want to deal with a foreign nipple on an airplane LOL!!! Also, is it a bad idea to pack an unopened can of formula in my checked luggage incase it explodes? Just trying to cut time to try and get to the store once we arrive.....

What can I do next?

Take extra nipples but not extra bottles. Take bottles of water and powdered formula and make them up as needed. Buy a second formula dispenser so you can have enough on hand.

Enfamil makes travel size tubes of formula -- one tube makes 4 oz of formula. We used to cart these tubes around everywhere we went. Just add water and shake adn voila! formula :)

Well this is a little bootleg, but what I do is i just get a few couple bottles of water and I put all the formula I need in a zip loc baggie, and I throw in the scoop. Then I just roll up the ziploc bag of formula tight and put it in another ziploc baggie, then when I need a bottle I put water in the bottle and scoop in my formula and I am good to go! I'd probably take enough for four bottles just to be safe in your scenario. I nurse and supplement with formula when I am out so I would take less, but you don't want to be caught without food for him so I would probably do like 16 scoops or so and take a couple 20oz bottles of room temp water and I would be good to go. Sometimes just to save space I will fill my bottle with 8oz water and then just take another big bottle of water. Then when you get to your destination you can go and buy whatever you need. Hope that was clear and helpful!!

The current security rules for airports is that you cannot take any liquids that are not sealed formula or medicines through security. There is a size limit for 4-8oz for liquid formula. You can also not take a cup or bottle with liquid in it through security. I'm pretty sure they will have a problem with powedered formula through security too.

This means that you cannot buy a large 32oz can of formula through security, but you would be allowed to take 3 4-8oz cans (check TSA website)
My suggestion is to buy the sealed ready made cans and take empty bottles for you to pour into. You can place the powdered formula in your checked suitcase. Not your carryon.

I think, for ease of transport, I'd just buy a big bottle of ready-made for the trip. I'd also just bring 1 bottle, and rinse it after each use. Then that's all you need in the diaper bag.
For the course of the plane ride, it's not going to hurt anyone if the bottle isn't washed between each use.
It's a little bootleg, but it's much easier than trying to mix formula with the baby and all of the stuff in those tiny airplane seats.

Have you thought of measuring out the formula and putting it in baggies? You can also take the water that you will be using for the formula, as long as you declare it. There is nothing wrong with putting a container of formula in you checked luggage either. TSA is usually pretty good when it comes to babies. Have a good trip.

When we traveled with our daughter when she was 8 mos. old, I used the pre-made formula. I did take a can of powder with me & used that when we were on vacation, it was so much easier. Also, if you don't want to do pre-made formula, you could buy a thermos & make the formula & pour in there & carry-on. You should be able to get 2 8oz. bottles out of it & it will stay cold for about 4 hrs. I believe. Also, I'd suggest two other things that aren't food related, ask for 'bulk head seating' when you check in at the gate. You will have a ton more leg room, its usually a bit nosier, but it helped my daughter sleep on our flight. I also would check-in the stroller (if your taking one), at the gate. It will be all ready for you when you step off the plane when you get to your destination. Enjoy your trip w/your little one!!! :)

I know at least that Similac actually makes little single-serve packets of formula. I had some when my son needed formula supplements. It is like a plastic tube, and you tear off the top and pour it in the bottle. Then of course you have to add water. You can do the same by measuring the formula for one bottle into ziploc bags, but I always worry that the agents will be concerned about unmarked bags of white powder! You can also get ready-to-serve bottles, but they might not fit the nipples you use. You can take cans of liquid (usually around 8-10 oz. each) on the plane as well, but they are kind of bulky.

We took a can of powdered formula and a few empty bottles. After we got through security we bought a big bottle of water from the Starbucks we passed. You can take water and stuff on the plane as long as you buy it after you go through security. It was like $1.40 for the water. They never said anything about the powdered formula going through security. A woman that was in front of me took bottles of water and juice and they just 'tested' them (with a little detector stick) to make sure they were ok.

There are containers of ready to feed formula for several brands if that interests you. I used these during car trips. I would keep the container under my leg and let my body heat warm it up as I drove. When my dd woke up, all I had to do was put it in a bottle and feed it to her. Very convenient and easy. Hope this helps. Have a safe trip.

The last time I flew, the rules about liquids did not apply to babies and toddlers. There was a whole paragraph on what parents of young ones can bring. We had a 2 year old and were able to bring a couple of already filled sippy cups without any problems. Definitely check the TSA website.

I'm not sure what the airline rules are for formula, but when I travel with a baby, I always bring a can of powdered formula and a few bottles already filled with water. That way when the baby needs fed, you just plop the scoops in, shake, and you're done.

You can get single serve packets of formula at several stores. That way you can bring one bottle, and than buy a bottle of water once you are through security.

We travelled from Chicago toTurkey and back, with a box of Enfamil single serving tubes. I brought several empty bottles with nipples, and asked the flight attendant for several bottles of water throughout the flight. You could easily purchase bottles of water after passing through security, if you are worried about availablility of bottled water on the plane. Neat and easy! For our 2 year old, I brought a can of Nido whole milk pawder. Not quite as neat, but still easy.

When we traveled we bought the ready to feed bottles to use for the trip. They come in 8oz size and 4oz size. You can buy nipples that jujst screw onto the bottles. Or you can pour one bottle into your own bottle if your baby is picky about nipples. I'd bring with the number of ready made bottle we'd need for the way there and the way back. Best part is they don't have to be refrigerated! I've seen them in both enfamil and similac brands.
Then when we get to our destination I just use the powder formulas cuz its cheaper. These ready to feed bottles were just so much easier and convenient than trying to mix powder on the go.

We used to take car trips with our baby, and here is what we would do: we had one of these, with premeasured formula in them: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3502347

Then we would have bottles with premeasured water in them and just mix and shake as needed. Our DD never had a problem with room temp water.

Here is the TSA information on traveling with children http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/index.shtm

This is the TSA information that specifically relates to traveling with formula, juice, medicine, etc. for your child. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

I always find the TSA site very helpful.

If it were me I would buy another of the formula dispensers so that you have enough for 6 bottles just in case. I would then pack 1 or 2 bottles and several nipples/tops. I would just rinse out the bottle in the sink and put a new nipple on top. (Then pack the rest of the bottles you will need in checked luggage).
I have packed a can of formula in my checked luggage and didn't have a problem. Maybe put it inside of a bag on the off chance that it explodes.
