Traveling to the Snow W/ 9 Month Old

My husband, 9 month old and I will be taking our first (plane) trip on Sunday to Eugene, and then to Bend, Oregon. I'm excited to go, as I'm oh-so ready for a 'vacation', but am apprehensive about the weather there, particularly in Bend, where it will be so cold (and snowy). I knew this upon planning our trip, but as our departure dates nears, am becoming increasingly more worried about traveling w/ her. Not so much about traveling itself (as I know she'll be a handful on the plane), but more so about being in the cold weather. We will be going there to 'check out' some places and the towns, so staying in and hanging out in our hotel room will (hopefully) not be something we will be doing (at least too often). I'd like to be able to get out and enjoy the beautiful nature and scenery while we're in the Northwest (as we love being outdoors, but don't get out as often since we've had her), and want to make sure that she's dressed warmly and appropriately for daily outings. Anyone out there experienced w/ babies in the snow?? Other than doubling up on a short and long sleeved onesies, shirts, sweaters, fleece pants, booties, jackets, a hat and mittens, is there anything else that I should be thinking about packing (and buying for her) for our trip?? Also, it's so hard now since it seems that all of the spring clothes are already out in the stores! What about for stroller rides?? Too cold for a Baby Bjorn or Kelty Kids backpack?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

they say (books etc) that you should dress your child as you would dress yourself. if you are cold, then they are probably cold too.. and if the sun comes out and you are a little on the warm side, your baby probably is too. layers are always good that way you can unlayer if the son comes out. :) have a great time!!

oh and baby bjorns are wonderful but at 9 months, depends on the size of your baby. your back may be killing you.. they will be fine in a stroller. backpacks are great from others i know that have used them. but remember you are in the snow too... lose your footing with that extra weight, or your husband... and that is a disaster

Hi there,

We just moved to N. Cal this summer from Anchorage Alaska, where I'm from. We have two boys who love the snow. My youngest is now 20 months old and I walked my older son to school everyday while we were up there. I would just put a long sleeved onesie on him and then some warm footie pjs, or if it was really cold, some pj pants, socks and then the warm fleece pjs and then his snow suit over that which was a really soft, puffy down alternative number from REI! Then I would put a light jacket on myself, put him in the front carrier, wrap a blanket around him and the carrier and tuck it in inbetween my body and him, and then I'd wear my husband's winter coat over the both of us!! A lot of work but we always loved walking together and he stayed plenty warm! I didn't cover up his tiny face though, don't smother her!:) Sometimes, if it was snowing I would put a light blanket over the top of him but always keep checking on him or I'd just carry an umbrella. For in the stroller there are these things you can buy, if you have a lot of money to spare, just like what you can put in the car seat/carrier, it fits in and it has holes in the back so all the seat belts and straps can go through and then it has a cover that zips over your baby. That way the wind isn't blowing at your baby's back and you don't have to worry about a blanket falling off. Usually they're made of that faux sheeps fur stuff. But like you said, I don't know where you can find all this stuff right now, if you're anywhere other than Alaska! If you go to REI up in Bend when you get there, you might be able to find some good stuff! And on sale, probably!
People live in Alaska. And there are festivals and all kinds of things, even in winter. You can bundle her up and put a snow suit over the top of her and she'll be totally fine. Even in a back pack. You're going to have SOOOO much fun!!
I wish I was going!!!

we went to michigan for christmas. it was cold!

in any case, i got a http://www.landsend.com/pp/SolidFleeceBunting~133172_-1.h... for my boy. it was WARM. he was ALWAYS sweating in it. and he hated having his feet and hands covered. for stroller rides, he just tucked an extra blanket around him. if it was windy, we used the wind shield or draped a blanket over the visor. he went out on snowy, cold days and was fine. he did get a runny nose, but i think that was more from the plane. i had knit him a warm, wool hat that he wore most of the time. he hates hoods.

we did a long sleeved undershirt, long sleeved t-shirt, and then a sweater or sweatshirt for normal indoor wear. i was wearing a t-shirt and sweater, so it was about the same.

just be careful of the extremities. it's easier for babes to get frostbite. if you use an extra blanket, you should be fine though.

Hi,

I use to live in Wisconsin when my 3 year old was a little one. There were a couple of things that we did. 1) I would sometimes dress her for the cold then put her in the baby snuggli, then button my coat up over her. It meant I had to buy a bigger coat, but my little one was always warm and cozy snuggled up next to me. 2) You can buy these car seat covers that zip/velcro/snap over your baby's car seat. They keep all the warmth in. If your car seat snaps into your stroller it helps so much in keeping baby warm.

My little one ended up adoring the snow. Even now at three she begs us to drive up to where the snow is. On occasion we drive up 80 to the Nyack exit and play for a while.

Have fun and enjoy your trip. :)
