Traveling to See Snow

My husband and I are trying to plan a surprise trip up North for our 12-year-old son who has never been in the snow. Having lived in a warm climate practically all our lives, we have no clothing warm enough for snow weather. We also have 19-month-old twins. I don't want to spend a huge amount of money for winter coats, sweaters and shoes for one trip.
Do any of you know of any good shops where I can get some winter clothing especially for the little ones at really low prices? We live in the Doral area but I am willing to travel to Broward - Pembroke Pines and surrounding area.

For those of you who have lived in a cold weather climate, can you offer any suggestions on what items are really must haves (other than the obvious coat, shoes, hats), what type of material I should look for or avoid, what is the best kind of sock or shoe to really keep your feet warm, etc. I really want to keep the little ones warm because they can't really tell you how cold they are.

Thanks for any info/suggestions.

What can I do next?

Hi D.,

I too was going to suggest the thrift stores however, you should ask any friends/family that live in cold weather areas because you are not going to find much down here. I just got back from snow over the holidays and my 2 yr old son actually wore rain galoshes in the snow. It worked great with a thick pair of shoes. For the gloves, you want to go with something more water proof (best) or resistant. Don't waste your money on cotton-y stuff. For the twins, go with mittens, not gloves- too difficult to deal with the fingers. And if you don't want to buy a thick coat, always do multiple layers and consider a wind breaker over a sweater, under the jacket. The wind is what really creeps in and makes you cold. Hope this helps!!

You're luckily near Doral, which has a huge place for coats and winter clothing, as well as other items for men, women, babies, and kids at a great price: Burlington Coat Factory. It is located in the Dolphin Mall, their site is burlingtoncoatfactory.com. A lot of their items are on sale, and they have supercute things for kids and snow suits that will keep their legs warm too and match the jacket. I am planning to go there this weekend due to this crazy cold weather we're experiencing and the lack of winter attire for myself and my toddler. If you're in no rush, ebay.com or amazon.com has great deals on brand new coats, with the tags still attached. If you don't mind used clothes, try craigslist.org, you can find someone near you that came down from up north and no longer needs their coat that's dying to sell it to you at a reasonable price. They sometimes have designer coats there too. There's always Goodwill, if again, you don't mind something used. Target.com has coats and sweaters as well, but if you want something very warm, that you can try on and not deal with the hassle of returns and have no time to wait for delivery, then I recommend Burlington, as they have down coats, wool coats, coats for plus sizes and petites, lightweight coats, all-weather (like for snow or rain), and some of their coats come with removable layers in case it gets a bit warmer. Some of their kids' coats come with a scarf attached, which would save you the cost of buying a scarf, or if that's not your cup of tea, you can check Macy's clearance section or their macys.com site, they sometimes have decent prices on their coats and sweaters. Old Navy has nice coats as well but apparently are mostly sold out at this point or the stores have huge lines. Personally, I won't buy such a thing as a coat without trying it on as some materials can make you look like you put on 30 lbs, and some materials are not warm enough, something you cannot appreciate unless you're able to feel the material. I don't know much about what to wear up north, but I assume earmuffs, boots, flannel pajamas and longjohns will come in handy as well as some thick socks in addition to the obvious coat, mittens, sweaters and scarves.

Old Navy might have some winter stuff still on clearance. Gloves, mittens, a hat that will keep their ears worn, and thick socks for sneakers should be good. (besides a coat/ jacket) We just moved from Miami to NJ... world of difference here! :)

I just checked the Old Navy website. There are tons of great winter items on clearance if there isn't much in the store.

Hi! Try the Salvation Army or Goodwill, sometimes you can find some inexpensive clothing there. Also Old Navy has cheap winter clothing.
Have fun!!!
