Transitioning to Organic - Best Prices?

We're making the transition to organic. Who has the best prices on organic milk? We're members of CostCo, have Jewel, Garden Fresh, Trader Joes and Whole Foods near by. I was at Trader Joes today but forgot to look at their pricing on the organic milk. I'm in a bit of sticker shock and hoping to find some cheaper prices.

What can I do next?

I find half gallons of house brand organic milk for $3.69 and whole gallons at $5.99 at both Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, and the quality is consistently good. They're also not ultra-high-temperature (UHT) pasteurized, which can give you a cooked-milk flavor. The Kirkland organic milk at Costco is UHT in the 1.5 gallon box packs.

I find the UHT milk in shelf-stable Tetrapaks to be useful to keep on hand in case of milk/snow emergencies, and I've found that at Whole Foods. Treasure Island has nonorganic milk tetrapaks, and there are, of course, the wildly expensive juice-box sized milk tetrapaks, too.

Trader Joe's is $5.99 and Organic Valley (I get at Jewel) is one of the top rated organics- regular price is 6.99 but you can get a $1 coupon online which makes it the same price as TJs and sometimes lower if you find it on sale with the coupon. It is more but I have read in a lot of places that milk is the one thing you should buy organic if nothing else.

We only drink organic milk at our house and we mostly buy it at either Domincks or Target. The prices are pretty much the same at either place unless one of them is having a sale. I would advise against buying the Domincks brand which is called "Organics" because it has a really funny taste. My husband describes it as metallic but whatever it is, it does not taste good. If you shop at either of those places, I would stick to either the Horizon brand or Oberweis (which is not strictly considered organic but is from cows that are completely hormone free.)

We don't eat only organic food but we definitely feel that organic is worth the extra money when it comes to milk. Especially so our little girls don't get all of those extra hormonoes pumped into their bodies at such a young age! Good luck

For comparison, Costco's 1% organic milk (kirkland brand) is about $9.50 for 3 half gallon cartons.
