My daughter is not the best eater. However, she eats cheerios, applesauce, organic raw cocunut butter, organic chicken cutlets and still eats organic baby food (rice and lentils, veggies, etc...) Please, can anybody tell me if there is a soymilk with dha (that they say is so important for brain development?). We have never given her any dairy products (I developed a dairy intolerance after I gave birth and they gave her isomil soy in the hospital, so that's what we kept her on). She is going to be 2 and we need to get her off the formula. Lots of data against cow's milk. However, I am told through others that the fat in cow's milk is important for development. Please help. We really want to get her off formula asap.
Thank you.

Have you asked your pediatrician? That should be your first stop. If you are not comfortable with his or her answer, then ask to be referred to a pediatric nutritionist.

You need to have some professional guidance and not just look for answers on the internet. It IS important to get fat for her brain development and she must have calcium to build the bones. It does not appear that you actually know if she has a dairy intolerance since you said that YOU developed one after birth (unless you mistyped here.) I don't know if you intend on keeping ALL dairy from her (that would be really challenging), but you must know with help from a professional what she has to eat in lieu of it in order to get what she needs for her brain to develop normally.

I urge you to get REAL professional guidance instead of listening to "others". (Though, yes, the "others" are right about the fat in the milk being so important.)

My son had a terrible milk allergy. At 12 months, he weaned and we just managed. He would occasionally drink rice milk, but he refused all the others (almond, soy, etc.) To this day, he rarely drinks milk.

I don't worry about it. He appears to be developing fine. He is advanced in lots of ways, so I just offer him up yogurt every day, and hope that he is getting enough calcium.

I'm really surprised that your almost 2 year old is eating baby food. Kids should be eating what you eat by 10-12 months, unless there is some medical reason for them to remain on baby food. You really should discuss this with a professional.

I would talk to her pediatrician. Your problems with milk do not necessarily mean she has the same, and there are milk options out there that are not cow milk. If you are going to continue to avoid dairy, then you should look for other sources of the fat and calcium she needs. I would look in vegetarian cookbooks or find websites for feeding the vegetarian toddler. You can also give her other sources of DHA. For example, fish or supplements.

I agree, talk with your pediatrician and an pediatric allergist. It is quite possible that she will be fine with cows milk.

My daughter was on soy formula, and didn't do well the first two times we tried to transition to cow's milk, but when we tried with 2% milk at 18m, she was fine. She is now almost 6y and drinks both 2% and whole milk.

YOU developed a dairy intolerance - are sure your daughter has it?
She might not.
You might want to try her on goats milk.
You can get it powdered or canned and if you can't find it in your super market you can buy it on Amazon.

My son is allergic to milk protein so he has to stay away from ALL dairy products and anything made with milk (lots of other words to look for on labels besides milk). He drinks soy milk. I have seen silk brand with added dha. Thi sis what the carton looks like- http://silksoymilk.com/products/silk-wellness/dha-omega-3... Fat is very important, so you need to make sure she gets the healthy fats from other sources like olive oil and avocados. I am not sure if there is another issue that you have to deal with since you say that she is "not the best eater," but she is not really eating age appropriately. I would recommend switching to the soy milk, if that is what you are leaning towards, and also schedule a visit to your pediatrician to discuss her eating habits. You might want to start a log of what and how much she eats daily, that way you can see where she is lacking.
