My son will be turning 4 in a month and would like a train birthday party. In fact, he has been talking about it for 6 months!!! I would like to have a train birthday party for him but have no ideas except for a train birthday cake. I was trying to think how to do some sort of train ride or something else train related but do not know any resources in the area. Anyone in the Charlottesville, VA area have any ideas/resources for a train birthday party for a 4 year old? Anyone outside this area have any ideas.....HELP!!!!! I am not that creative.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great ideas!!! I went down to our local Amtrak and they said they had people ride the train for 1 stop (45-60 min trip) and have cake on the train. They will provide conductor hats and coloring books. I was in luck as well as the closest stop to us is also a historic train station with a train themed restaurant and caboose the kids can play on - how fun! I think I am going to try to arrange this for a small group of kids, the only problem now is trying to figure out how to get back:)

Maybe get old boxes that the kids can fit themselves into. Tie string to it for shoulder straps. Let them decorate their 'car' and let them run around the backyard choo-chooing ??

Buy conductor hats online and get markers and let the kids decorate their hats? Or just buy regular hats and let them wear them.

Get toy trains and hide them around the back yard. Do an 'easter egg' type of hunt, hunting for the trains. (Or hide tracks, then they can put the tracks together once they find them all).

Hi L,

Does your son like Thomas the Train? My oldest son had a Thomas theme birthday party and he LOVED it!!! There are plates, napkins and you can get them online or at Party City (if there's one near you). There are also cakes that have the Thomas theme. Good luck & Happy Birthday to your son!

This may be a duplicate so I apologize if it is. Is your son into Thomas? There is a TON of Thomas things out there as well as a website. Good luck & happy birthday to your little guy!

I was at a train party a few years back. Mom called an organizer and had an actual train in front of the house that ran on the roads and drove the kids in it up and down the street.

I did a train party for my daughter's third. The color scheme was brown, tan, and bright blue. I used the links below as inspiration, but I did it all myself and didn't really order the fancy online stuff. I found a train pan at william-sonoma and made three dimensional train cars that I decorated with candy and put it on a round layer with tracks made out of licorce. I made ChooChoo signs and railroad crossing signs with 3s instead of Rs. We mostly had playtime and coloring pages, but a friend of mine rented a ride-on train for her yard at a party store or bought it online maybe. For favors I gave out train engine cookie cutters and I meant to make a cookie mix (sugar, flour, etc) but I didn't get to it. A scavenger hunt is always good for a 4 year old for an activity..My daughter wore girly overalls and a train conductor hat.

Get the kids cheap train conductor hats and bandanas like this for party favors and give them at the beginning of the party so they can dress up:

This train party is totally adorable and easy to do:

this "snack train" is cute, just made out of little boxes:

this train party is adorable and easy. They made their own signs on cardboard and even taped a train track on the floor. It would be fun to have some kind of game using the trains.

Are you wanting to have the party at home or somewhere else? The bounce-n-play in Charlottesville has a new train ride for kids and they do birthday parties.

We went to a bday party at a park once and they had a few large train tracks and tons of trains set up on foam mats. They had a company that did it (we are in LA, so that wouldn't help you, but you might be able to find something similar). They brought one train table plus a bunch of other tracks - company set it up, took it all down, brought all the supplies. It was great!

I believe you have Amtrak in your area? Why not do a party on the train! Call Amtrak and see if they do parties.
