And wanting to give a traditional anniversary gift is not following what someone says. It is following a tradition. Choice to do or not to do.
I think there are some things that are fixed, not carved in stone but fixed, across the board.
Like birthstone rings. If you get a birthstone ring for your children you don't just pick out some random stones, you to pick the birthstone for their month. There are just some things that are set, fixed, not really open for discussion. You don't have to follow them, they are there if you decide you want to.
I had not thought of these in a long long time. A friend of mine celebrated her first anniversary last fall. The traditional gift is paper. She knew she wanted her gift to be something special and paper....well, what can you do with paper? She thought long and hard about it and it finally dawned on her. They both loved football. Their college homecoming football game was the same weekend as their anniversary. So plane tickets, game tickets, all paper were in his envelope. They went and had a blast! And now they are expecting an addition to their family....
