Toys Ideas for 7-Month-olds (Or Older)

Hello Ladies,

We're not huge fans of loads of toys all over the house and I've tried to stay away from a lot of plastics etc. and stayed pretty much organic and simple. But, we're finding that a few select items might really add to our daughter's fun as well as her development (she's played with some at friend's houses and enjoyed them, but also gets overwhelmed sometimes by too many options). As well as helping her enjoy herself and learn, it seems like some things might help give me a little break to work on dinner or make a call.

Grandma (a huge proponent of loads of toys and stimulation) is coming to town and wants to get her some things. I'd love to have some ideas of toys that you ladies have tried and find useful and fun. My goal is to just get a few great items and stop gramm from going crazy.

We were thinking of the baby einstein exercauser or something similar that you find better.. and any other ideas.

thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I tryed not to go crazy with toys... but we had a birthday party for my son and suddenly we have MORE than enough. I actually stopped using the excersauser when he was around 7 months, so if you don't already have one, I wouldn't spend the money. Here are a couple that are really great that will last you several months.

We have a leap frog stand up table toy - but there are things to do underneith for sitting down too. Very educational and my son LOVES it. (I tried to find it online, but I must have been looking in the wrong place)
You probably want a good push-around toy and some of them have really fun stationary activities too.
We also got this fisherprice Laugh & Learn™ Learning Puppy. This is great and he takes it everywhere!
Vtech also has some good educational toys.

I really like the activity tables for that age. It is great becuase they pull themselves up on it and play. My daughter is almost 9 mo, and she loves her. The rest of the "floor toys" she looks at, chews on and then on to the next. The activity table keeps her entertained with music, lights, buttions etc. She really thinks she is hot stuff standing at the table!

I'd be careful with the exersaucer. My boys had little interest for theirs once they started pulling up and walking along objects. Now at 10 months they cant stand to be in anything they want to explore on their own. 7 months is a hard age. One toy that I have that they both love and play with which is also still advanced for them is the fisher price crawl and cruise musical jungle!

It is fairly expensive so maybe is grandma buys that she wont want to buy many others.

Love love love the Baby Einstein Jumper. My daughter loved it sooo much that when she goes to Grandma's house and plays in the exersaucer my mom has, she is constantly jumping in it. Now that she is crawling and pulling to standing, she pulls up on it and plays with all the toys!

I just wanted to say that I would think before buying exercauser. They are quite expensive and won't use it for a long time. We bought one for my son and he really liked it at first, but as soon as he started walking he didn't want to sit in there anymore. I think once the kids find the freedom to walk they don't want to be sitting in one spot. Like other ladies said balls are a big hit, they have those toys where you roll the balls and it makes all kind of noise and musis or the one that you push a button and the balls jump out in the air. Also activity tables are great and the push toys.

my daughter at 7 months was playing with toys that made noise. all her toys make noise and move in some way. we had the excersaucer she loved it. but maybe try building blocks or something she can stack. what is really helpful to us is getting toys that are a little old for her like like maybe buying 6-36 month toys (so they last) or buying toys for a 12 month old. they will challenge her and keep her interested. my daughter has the sing and learn stage she loves it!!! also a good one for your daughter may be the laugh and learn puppy (i think thats what its called) by fisher price i think. theres soo many options you have just look and see what intrest her. good luck!!!

Hi,
I would say balls. My 3 year old and my 9 month old, both loved balls starting at about 7 months. Right now, it's my 9 month olds fav! We have the hard ones that are about the size of a small apple, soft ones that she can squeeze and throw, ones that shake and make noise, and small beach balls are really fun too. When they roll away she crawls after them to get them. Plus they are nice quiet toys. The other fav with my kids was blocks. There are so many fun ones, that you won't have trouble finding any.
Good luck!

I think she is a little old for the exosaucer, once she starts to be mobile, I found the interest to be diminished in that. Get a toy that has a handle and wheels - fisher price makes a walk behind toy that has some colored things to spin and move around. She can play with all of the manipulatives now, and when she starts to stand up, she can hold the handle and walk behind it. My kids each had one and they WORE IT OUT they loved it so much. I thought it didn't look like that much fun when she received it as a gift, but both my kids adored that toy.

Hi Roxane. I discovered a Toy Store I love in Seaport Village. They carry wooden toys that use only soy based inks. The brand name is Melissa & Doug. (http://www.melissaanddoug.com/) Sometimes Henry's will carry the brand but they have a very small selection only carrying two or three types of toys...and they are more for 2 year olds (a lot of coloring & painting stuff). Anyway, you & baby & Grandma can make a nice afternoon of it, going to have lunch & shop for toys. They have tons of puzzles, building blocks, & drag along toys. Good Luck.

My son is 10 months old and has had his exersaucer since he was 4 months old and LOVES it! We invested in the 3 in 1 by Evenflo. It costs a bit more but I think it's worth it. It has lots of interactive toys that are staggered in age/development. They also have a standard snap system so you can buy different toys and change them out periodically to keep interest up. It is height adjustable. Finally, once your little one is standing and cruising, it changes from a bouncy saucer to a stand up table that she can cruise around. (We still haven't made it to that stage yet.)

Stay away from walkers...they're tempting but not good for their development in walking. My pediatrician and the AAP are against them.

table top toys. They often come in wood. great for a 7 month old to play and practice standing and pulling up. Your baby will be soon be too mobile to get your monies worth from an excersaucer. Although they are wonderful, our baby loved her bouncer and it gave me such peace of mind to have her safely in one spot while I could get a few things done. The table top toys are often seen in Dr.'s offices with little wood blocks and beads attached to wire and keeps kids occupied while standing. Great for your age range. And toddlers continue to enjoy the table top toy even after they have mastered pulling to stand and walking. Our baby loved playing with one at a friends house and we were able to see how it really encourages advancement in mobile skills.

I would get an exersaucer with all the doodads on it. It will free you up to get a lot of things done. She may not use it much past age one, but at least you can save it for your next child, then they can start using it around age 4-5 mos. I would also get a couple of toys that have lights and songs and a little educational. They are never too young to start learning!

Our favorites when my kids were little was anything by leapfrog. Baby Tad is awesome-we had to buy another one because he wore out! Soft fabric blocks are also good at her age.

I love the Habba toys. They are quality toys (I think made in Germany). We have a specialty toy store in Escondido that sells wooded toys. Maybe try and find a store like that!

The Chicco ball pool. Online from target. My son has been playing in it for months and months. He will be 8 months in a week. Order one bag of extra balls and blow up the plastic pool untill it does go smooth and round.

I love our excersaucer too but it's for outside only now, he's been over it for awhile, he would rather climb now. I like how it keeps him out of trouble when I'm watering though. I would get it at a childrens orchard or used childrens store all ready put together!!!! It was really fun watching him discover how to make different sounds and manipulate the play parts.
