Those activity tables are wonderful. Lots of lights, sounds, and something to lean on while their legs get stronger for walking.
can anyone recommend some toys that will hold the interest of 10 month olds for more than 30 seconds? Thanks!
thanks everyone!! so many great ideas...i love this forum. much appreciated! :)

My second son had nothing to do with any toys. We have so many since he has an older brother. We have it all and my second one hates toys and would not watch TV for any amount of time. He wouldn't sit still for 2 seconds for me to read a page in a book. He requires physical play with other children. He would throw all his toys out of his crib. Ugh! It was really hard since he had acid reflux for the first year and was already walking at 7 months. I joined a mom's group when he was 5 months old and that seem to help a lot. He is now 20 months and is just now starting to show interest in toys and tv. Its hard gettting anything done since he would rather climb my kitchen counters, kitchen table, and drag electrical items to the nears outlet. Its crazy. Good luck to you. My first son played on his own and likes to be in his own world.
SAHM, 41 2 amazing, funny little boys. 1 & yrs old. They truly take my breath away.
My son loved his Leap Frog Learn & Groove musical table. They can be put flat on the floor, or use the legs and they can stand up and play on it. There are several kinds like this and they all are pretty similar. I thought this one was the best price for the most activities.
Playskool Busy Ball Dropper is another good one and the Fisher Price Go Baby Go Crawl and Cruise Jungle. The jungle one we got when he was a little older, like 12 mos I think. I was afraid at the time that we bought it too late and he would have already outgrown it, but he still plays with it at 27 mos. No way can I pack that thing away. So that one was really worth the money for us.
*Edit*
I completely forgot about the stacking/nesting cups. We have a set of 10 square cups that nest in each other or make a tower, and he would play with them forever. I think he honestly could play with them for like half an hour easily. He would sort the colors, and nest them, and eventually could stack them up and knock them down. He still plays with those too. He also liked my pots and a wooden spoon. I allow and encourage him to be as noisy as he wants, so playing "bang bang" was great fun, and still is.
Hi ~
The most important this is you want your child to be motivated and engage in the toys – I find that the toys the child like depends on the child. Some toys 10 month old have liked include:
- balls (e.g. there is a bumpy ball that squeaks from discovery toys - http://www.amazon.com/Discovery-Toys-TANGIBALL/dp/B000EE8130 )
- large stacking blocks (clear plastic from fisher price - http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Peek-a-Blocks-Press-Go...
- v-tech book (http://www.target.com/VTech-Rhyme-and-Discover-Book/dp/B0...)
- bubbles
- leap frog spinning alphabet (big hit) - http://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-Spin-Sing-Alphabet-Zoo/dp/...
- nesting cups - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3...
- fish bowl - http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-73299-Ocean-Wonders-Fi...
- things to bang – pots, pans

what caregivers can do to help…
• Be available to play.
• Respond to baby's sounds.
• Smile at the baby. Let baby play with your fingers.
• Talk with baby.
• Play "pat-a-cake" and catch games.
• Play "peek-a-boo," "bye-bye," and hiding games.
• Make faces in a mirror.
• Sing to baby.
• Play at "losing" and finding things.
• Name objects as you give them to the baby.
Remeber to have fun :)
One of the toys that I talk about in our parent discussion time at Gymboree is the Pop Up Pals toy. They are relatively small and come in different types of characters, e.g. Disney, Sesame Street, etc. We used this alot when my kids were little. It's appropriate for several different stages of development. So, for infants, they can look at it during tummy time, later they learn to close the boxes, then they learn to open the boxes. They can also point out the different characters if you ask them "Where is Elmo", etc. and eventually they will point, recognize and say the name of the character.
We used to also bring these to restaurants with us as they could sit easily on the table and not take up too much room.
My 9 month old loves playing with the Fisher Price Interactive Baby Grand Piano. At $40+, it's a little pricey, but it'll be used for a long time. We got it as a gift for my daughter's 1st birthday and she was still playing with it when she turned 3. My second child started to show interest in the piano about a month ago.
Another toy that he really loves is Fisher Price Ocean Wonder Fishbowl. It can keep him entertained pretty long. Ours is an old version we inherited from my sister. I think the newer ones look a little different, costs about $20. Don't know if it's as much fun as the old one, but I don't see why it shouldn't be.
Anything with sound. That worked for us. I never thought I'd be the mom that enjoyed any musical toys but I LOVE them because it's the main thing that entertains them. I keep some in each car (that way he hasn't seen them every day and their good for trips to the store or on long trips). I keep them in the 2 living rooms, his room etc. Then the next thing I noticed he liked were balls. That was it for awhile. Oh and my drawer full of Tupperware. Keeps him busy for hours even now and he's 14 mos. old.
Go to www.DiscoveryToys.com and find a consultant near you. You can have a DT "party" with or without kids. If you do it like a play group, you and your friends can let your children play with the toys before you decide to buy them so you can see what keeps your child's interest. Most of the toys can be used in several different ways so you get tons of use out of them as your child grows developmentally. They are a bit pricey due to having to add on shipping fees, but in my experience they are well worth it. We spend tons of money on cheaper toys that our kids never play with or that break. DT toys are guaranteed for life not to break or they will be replaced for free. And if you lose a part of it, some of the toys you can just buy replacement parts instead of throwing the whole things away or having to buy a whole new one. If you don't want to have a DT party, a consultant will usually meet with you one-on-one if you want.
