Tossing & Turning

Hi everyone! I have a 6 month old daughter and she has slept through the night since she was 2 months old. The only issue I have is that she constantly thumps her legs while she's sleeping. I really don't think she's over dressed and getting hot. She does the same motion when she's really excited. Could she be dreaming about being excited? Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

My middle son thumped his head and legs. We adopted him at 18 months and he woke us up the first night with the thumping. We were quite worried that something was the matter as he had only weighed one and one half pounds at birth. We discussed it with his pediatrician who luckily was the one who had treated him since birth. He said that it was a form of stimulation. Our son continued the thumping until he was probably around 12. Check with your doctor for an opinion.

Just a quick question... does she sleep in bed with you or by herself? Just wondering if it could be an issue with space. My daughter who is 4 and and sleeps with us along with our 2 year old thumps her legs while she is asleep and wakes me up. I usually find that although she is asleep, she is aware that someone is too close to her so I reposition her and then she's fine.

L., that is too funny! My 7 month old daughter does the same thing! What an ab workout she's getting! She always does is when she's really tired. I think that's how she soothes herself to sleep. One night my husband and I woke up to "thumps in the night" and we thought, what in the world is that? Turned out to be our little thumper, Carly.

Enjoy your thumper!

My daugheter started doing this around 5 months (she was still in a bassinette in our room because of some house renovations). We moved her into the crib right around that time so I'm not sure when she stopped. The only problem it ever caused is that it woke me up when she was still in our room LOL.

I am 23 years old and still do it and my mom said I started as soon as I was home from the hospital. If I'm really tired I just go to sleep and don't do it and it worries my husband and he says on those nights he wakes up a lot to see if I'm still breathing. Some kids rock to soothe themselves. I guess we like to move our legs!

One of my kids did that too. You'd hear a thump coming from the other room. You'd go to check on her and she'd be sound asleep thumping her legs on the mattress. She still slept fine so we just laughed and went on.

Hi L., Both of my infants, now toddlers flop and carry on in their sleep. I was concerned they were having sometimes bad or good dreams. The pediatrician assured me it was normal. Hope this helps.
