Toothless Wonder

My child is 9 months old and he hasn't a single tooth in his head yet. Is this normal?? Most kids alot younger than him have already gotten both bottom teeth. I've heard the saying "The later the tooth the early the talker". Is there really any validity to that? I've also heard that if the teeth come in later that they are healthier...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for sharing their teething stories, they really reassured me that Nate is not dentally challenged. I'm sure that he will get them shortly. Again, Thanks for sharing. Have a great New Year.

Hi I thought the same thing about my son. He is now 18 months and only has his bottom 2 and top 2 and he didn't get those until after his 1st birthday. I thought he didn't have any or something was wrong b/c my nephew had all his teeth even his 2 year molars by his 1st birthday. I think it's just that every child is different. My daughter got hers faster and started walking and talking faster than my son is. So hang in there, they're on their way in just give it some time:)

My son didn't get any teeth until he was 1. His Dr. said the later they come in the less time they have to get cavities. I also nursed him for 11 months, so it was kind of a blessing I guess, no biting mom.

My son got his first tooth at 8 months and we heard it was a good thing too! I was wondering if they would ever come in. Now he has 8 teeth and he is 14 months old. So they will eventually come in. Of course I have also heard if one doesn't come in by 1 year, then you should look into it because that could be a bad thing. But I'm sure his doctor will tell you more than me. (-:

Hey M.,
Believe me when I tell you that i know what you are going through exactly! I actually had the same problem with Jaden (14mths) He only has one tooth which came to life at a Dr check up (11mths). When I told the Doc she said it was normal and he soon will have many more to come but he has yet to surface any others. It sure has not stopped my little onetooth wonder from eating up a storm. I never heard that saying before but it most be true because Jaden sure has a vast vocabulary for his little age. I hope this helped. Keep your hopes up and a tooth brush ready :-) they'll be here soon :-)I know I am.

I know how you feel, my son was a year before his first 2 teeth starting coming in (they seem to come in pairs). He is 18 months old now and still only has 8 teeth! His doctor said its nothing to worry about.

My daughter didn't get her first tooth until she was almost 10 months, and then they can in 2 at a time. Our doctor said not to worry. I think he is fine and just taking his time. If you are really worried, you could take hime to his doctor. Good Luck.

Don't stress, my son didn't get his first tooth until he was 11 months old. He is now 22 months old and only has his 2 yr molars left to come through. I haven't heard the wives tale about an early talker, but I have heard that the later the teeth the healthier they are. My ped also said getting teeth is heredity and my husband didn't get his teeth until late and to this day he still has no cavities.

Dear Michelle,

My son, who will be 1 on Jan. 30th, just got his bottom 2 teeth last week. They came in about two days apart from each other and really didn't bother him. Having said that, I can feel that the top two front teeth are starting to push throught the skin and they are really bothering him!!! Hope that this helped you, M.

My son was around 3mos when he started cutting teeth and got his first one in at 5mos. I'm sorry i can't be of more help i just wanted to say that the "later the tooth the earlier the talker" might be true b/c my son will be 2 thursday and he only says maybe 7 words. Maybe it's true:) but i don't think you have anything to worry about. Just look on the bright side...no teeth...no biting!lol

My oldest son didnt get his first tooth until he was 9 months and then one would pop up out of nowhere the next day...after a couple come in it take a few more months..then more and more come in. Dont worry...its just how his body is working on its own..not a problem that he hasent yet. But I say if u really want answers then ask ur ped.

Hi,

My son is 11 months old now and just got his first tooth one month ago. After that, they really started coming in and he has all 4 front teeth now. I would not worry at all. From what I understand, it's perfectly normal for babies to not get a single tooth until they are a year old.

My daughter is almost 10 months and within the past month and and a half has gotten 4. The bottom were like two at once then immediatley the top 2 started. It's amazing! I have always heard "the later the stronger." My husband and I were both as old or older ( I dunno about the hereditary thing-just made me worry less). She seemed like she was teething early on constantly gnawing but no. It'll be okay who wants to be just like everybody else anyways!

Hey Michelle!

I have also heard that the later they come in, the healthier or stronger they are! I am not sure how true that is, but I myself didn't get teeth until I was a year old, and have never had a cavity. My brother, on the other hand, got teeth at 6 months, and always has problems! It seems like he is always at the dentist! Same goes with my son....he didn't get any teeth until he was 14 months old!! It didn't stop him from eating either!! He loves food!! His cousin started getting teeth at 5 months, is now 3, and has already had a cavity.

I am also not sure about the talking thing. But my sons first word was ,"Hey Sadie" that's our dog...and he started talking at nine months. Then he started saying Hun GEE!! for hungry. Anyway, his cousin...and he is older...didn't start talking until a year...and still doesn't talk as well as my son. But, I don't know if that has anything to do with teeth.

He will be fine. There isn't a set timeline saying when children should expect teeth...or what is normal. Hope this helps. B.

MICHELLE,
DONT WORRY ABOUT THE TEETH. BOYS TEND TO BE SLOWER IN THAT AREA FOR SOME REASON! MY NEPHEW IS NOW 1 AND STILL HAS NO TEETH. WE TOOK HIM AND TO THE DOCTOR AND HE SAYS IT IS VERY VERY COMMON FOR BOYS!

M.,

My son who is now 5 didn't get is 1st tooth until he was almost 19 months. I spent hours on the internet and couldn't find any examples that were that late--I was sure he was going to need baby dentures. His peditrician had me take him to the dentist for x-rays and sure enough, they were in there. I have also heard taht the later they come in the healthier they are. Don't worry!!

Hey M.,
Dont' sweat the tooth thing. My son, now 8 yr., got his 1st tooth @ 10mos (very early talker - 1st full sentence @ 11 mos.). My dtr, now 6 yr., got her teeth the same time she started to walk - 15mos!! (She was a late talker - along with most of her other milestones!) I was concerned when she didn't get her teeth in by 12 mos. so I asked my son's dentist at the time and she said that it wasn't a concern. It was actually healthier in the long run. 1. If they aren't exposed then they are less likely to be bumped and damaged from a fall. 2. The later they come in the stronger they are likely to be because they are absorbing more calcium from under the gum-line. 3. Less contact with things that may damage the teeth -i.e. juice.

Her recommendation was to call her if it didn't look like anything was happening by 16 mos. Well, there they were at 15mos. She got 4 in less than 2 weeks. Needless to say - no sleep for anyone.

Hang in there. It will happen.

My daughter didn't get her first tooth until 2 weeks before she turned 1! It was no problem and it never effected her ability to eat. As far as the early talker I am not sure. She has a large vocabulary for her age but we have always worked with her.

Hi there! Don't fret about him not having any teeth yet. My son cut his first 2 teeth (on the bottom & at the same time) 2 days before his 1st birthday! When speaking with my pediatrician about this, he said it was good that it was taking this long b/c the longer it takes for the teeth to come in, the thicker/healthier the teeth will be, making them less prone to cavities and such! Just enjoy the fact that he can't bite just yet! LOL!
