My brother is 20...I feel so helpless, he has a really bad toothache, and I don't know what to do for him. He doesn't have insurance, so he can't go to the dentist. My husband picked him up tonight so that he could come and visit and stay the night, but he was in so much pain he ended up asking Andrew to bring him back to Job Corps, where he lives. I gave him a bottle of mouthwash because he said it helped for a minute... I gave him some tylenol pm, and told him to gargle warm salt water. I don't know what else to do. And now that I am a mom, I am actually getting really emotional for him. I wish that I could help him more. Do any of you have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

There are Community Health dental clinics in Providence--www.providencechc.org. I am from San Francisco and there were clinics that were run by a university that had a doctoral program for dentistry. There must be something like that here or in nearby MA or CT. It was a very inexpensive way to have dental care and even though the dentists were students, they had been through many years of training before they actually got to touch live people...and, they were well supervised and I never had any problems with their work. Good luck!

Hi A.,
A tooth can be serious, he should have it checked. If he goes to your dentist tell them the he has no insurance, sometimes they will make up a payment plan, let them just take care of the tooth that is giving the problem. This means probably an xray of that tooth that could cost about $20-$40 depending on the dentist. Also a dental school, Boston University Dental School, Tuffs Dental school, Harvard Dental School all have great clinics. This sounds like he needs to be checked by a dentist asap and if the pain keeps him up a night it sounds serious. Good luck!

Before I decided to be a SAHM I worked for an Oral Surgeon. The tooth really does need to be checked out. If it is decayed or cracked it could lead to an ifection that can put him in the hospital for worse problems then a tooth ache. Try calling some of the teaching hospitals Like BU and Tufts sometimes they will give free or discounted treatment. Call around to some dentist they may have a program called Care Credit that he can sign up for. It's a loan that a credit agency gives for dental treatment and he will have to pay it back on a payment plan and they only give the amount of what is needed. You could also put it on a credit card and have him pay you back. He will need a x-ray to see what is going on with the tooth and if an infection has developed in the area. If it is a wisdom tooth that is causing the problem maybe his medical insurance would cover an extraction of the tooth. Alot of medical plans cover the extraction of full and partial boney (fully or partially cover teeth that are under the gums) extractins of wisdom teeth and the x-ray and consult would be covered also. Try putting some Oral Gel (baby teething ointment) on the area for minor relief. Good luck and let me know if you need more help.

Hi A., I think the best thing for your brother to do is call around to a few dentist offices and ask about payment plans or if he can't afford to make payments at all they may be able to refer him to someone to help him get seen by a doctor or dentist at no charge. I know ER's have to treat him regardless but hopefully he can get help before it comes to that. Tooth infections can be life threatening in some cases if left to fester. I read a few suggestions online and clove oil keeps coming up as a numbing agent so maybe get some of that and rub it on the affected gum area to ease the pain till he can get some antibiotics. Good luck with that I hope he gets help soon, it's hard to function withn that kind of pain I know. L..

I have heard you are suppose to rub asprin on it. But it could be something more serious like an abcess he should really be checked out by a dentist they always set up payment plans if you have no insurance and can't afford to pay.

Is it a tooth that hurts- or is it his wisdom teeth coming through? When mine came through, BOY, it was HORRIBLE!!! I had no idea teething hurt that much. No wonder babies go nuts! If it is his wisdom teeth it will subside. But if it's a toothache he should definately see a dentist. It will only get worse. Maybe look up lost cost dental clinics? I don't even know if they have those but I feel for him. I hate tooth problems. I hope he feels better. Sorry i couldn't help much.
