I took cipro starting 2 days before conception for a kidney infection and had to be on Cipro for 20 days and had it given IV 2 times in the hospital. It is not a safe drug for pregnancy and I am very worried about the complications for the babys development. DOes any one know any thign about the complications or have they ever taken Cipro or a related medicine during the first weeks of pregnancy? I am losing sleep over this one any advice would be helpful or any web site that is knowledgable. Thanks and God Bless.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I had an appointment with a prenatal diagnosis team and a very in depth lengthy ultra sound and our baby looks wonderful. There seem to be no ill effects that can be seen by ultra sound and also with it being so early in the preganncy the baby was still surviving on the yolk sac and only had a few days of exposure. Thank you for all of your support it really helps to just get other peoples perspective and their own testimony as to how things with similiar aspects went with them.

Hi. I was taking Cipro for a week, started on 2nd or 3rd day of my pregnancy. Didn't know I was pregnant. I was going crazy over it as well. Went to 3 or 4 different doctors to get different opinions. They all said, that it shouldn't be a problem, since fetus doesn't attach to the uteris wall for about a week, so my baby got only a couple of days of it at the most through my blood. My boy is 9 months now and we didn't have any problems. You can search the web, I found a lot of message boards with simular situations. No one really knows how Cipro could affect the fetus, because it wasn't tested on human fetus, so they labelled it "drag not safe for pregnancy". I'd get doctor's opinnion (or few) if I were you. Good luck!!!

Hi M.,
Here's a link to an article for you on the use of Ciproflaxin by pregnant women:
Ciprofloxacin (CIPRO ): Use by pregnant & lactating women
If the link doesn't come through when I send this, here's the web address you can type in to take you to it:
http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/cipro/cipropreg.htm
From what I gathered, it hasn't actually ben tested in pregnant and lactating women, but is often prescribed when the situatin warrants it... seems to be considered "safe enough" if there's a need for the mom to have a strong antibiotic (it's chosen over others). It says that, although they cannot say it poses NO risk, it is unlikely to pose a substantial risk.
Punch in "cipro effects on pregnancy" to your google and it will generate several other articles as well.
I've had friends on strong antibiotics within the first trimester (about 3 of them) and all the pg's and babies came out fine (one mom had nasty, nasty morningsickness -morning, noon, and night all 3 trimesters- but that was not related to her antibiotic use in early pg and is, unfortunately, what her pg's are like). That isn't a case study or scientific data, but I hope it helps to hear that there are other moms who had no ill-effects (one or even all of them may have been on cipro itself, but I don't know the names of their antibiotics, only that they were "the big stuff" like cipro is and same trimester as you).
Congratulations on your pg, btw. Had your kidney infection NOT been healed, I think you and your baby would be in some real danger. Maybe the cipro is the thing that made it all okay and saved the baby from danger... although I understand and empathize fully with your fears and worry.
Take care and God bless.

went through something similar and the best advice I can give is try your best to stop worrying... that will NOT change anything and is really bad for the baby and your pregnancy. Just know that you did not try to do anything intentionally to your child and that you will be as healthy and responsible as you can be now that you know. eat right, exercise, sleep and DONT worry. now, I am not an idiot, I do realize that is MUCH easier said than done. But for me, I had to just let go and realize that IF any damage had been done then there was nothing worrying could do to change that and I just held on hope that everything was ok and luckily enough I have two beautiful healthy kids!! make sure you get all the tests, etc and go from there. I always suggest the attitude of 'what is meant to be will be' and again, just do all you can now to make sure you are healthy! take those prenatals and drink lots of water and eat well, etc. since you were not on a longterm dosage, the baby is most liekly just fine. That is what I was told and if you look on line, that should be what you find out as well. most of the disclaimers are the 'just in case' kind and are not meant to really apply to short term doses, they just have to tell you just in case.... good luck!

www.kellymom.com is a wonderful resource for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. They have a link for medications that are safe or unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Check it out and check with your ob doc.

You can call the California Teratogen Information Service at ###-###-#### and they will give you really good information about the studies that have been done for this medication (and explain to you what they mean!).

Just so you know, no human studies have shown an increased risk for birth defects from Cipro, but it hasn't been well studied. Overall, it is unlikely that your exposure increased the risk for birth defects.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

The most knowledgeable person on this is your doctor. Please check with him or her on this rather than depend on a website or message board. Best of luck!

When I was 23, I got pregnant for the first time. It was unplanned. I was taking Cipro at the time of conception and finished the dosage as prescribed. I found out a month later that I was pregnant. In the second month I went to the doctor for bleeding that was now in its second day. I had no pain, but it being my first pregnancy and the second day of bleeding, I was worried. I was told to take two days of bed rest. I explained to the doctor that I had been taking cipro at the time of conception and finished it the weeks following it. He said as long as I've stopped then I should be fine. I then went on bed rest for four days to be safe. Unfortunately I returned to that hospital a few weeks later due to heavier bleeding. I had lost the baby in my tenth week. Its really hard to say if it was due to the Cipro or the stress I was in at the time unrelated to Cipro.

I was on blood thinners when I found out that I was pregnant with my now 4 year old and I let my GYN know and let her know that I had serious concerns and she supplied me with a 1-800 number for a drug hotline that when I called I recieved a live person and we went throw the whole process together, them asking me certian questions and giving me very valuable feedback, helping educate me and putting my concerns in the right perspective and I was able to recieve other info regarding diet with them as well. Let your GYN know and ask them about references that you could utilize.

I got a bladder infection from conceiving our daughter and took macrodantin starting 2 days after conception. I also took it a second time for another bladder infection a few months later. Our daughter is perfectly normal... even wonderful much of the time.
My personal belief - against popular belief - is that nature does everything it can to protect our babies. Our bodies are designed to do this - so take a deep breath and relax - your adrenaline and bad vibes (being so worried) probably have more of an effect than an antibiotic that you took for 10 days.
Just think back to the days when our mothers and grandmothers smoked and drank heavily all the way through their pregnancies! I'm not saying that's a good idea - let's all raise a glass - but most of us turned out fine despite our mothers' mistakes.
Having 4 kids you should know that pregnancy makes you paranoid - so relax. There's nothing you can do about it now, except give your baby lots of good vibes - lots of love and comfort. Take care of yourself - the baby will be fine :)

HI,
In the time frame that you mentioned the egg was not attached to the uteran wall yet. so I would think that the baby should be fine. I had surgery when I was pregnent and didnt know it.
The doctor said that the egg was not attached yet and could not get the meds i took then. My son is 9 and fine.
good luck.
