Too Soon for Sex After C-section? Can I Get Pregnant?

My daughter is one month old, today. She is my first. I had her via c-section on June 10th. My c section incision has been healing very well and my husband and I had sex this morning and we got so into it after weeks of not having it .. that he forgot and came inside me (to be blunt, sorry). I just stopped bleeding the other day (bled for about 3 1/2 weeks). I haven't had my period yet (which I assume is seperate from postpartum bleeding). Is it possible for me to get pregnant? I can't call my Dr. to ask until Monday and it's really bothering me to know. I want our children to be at least a year apart. Can anyone help me put my mind at ease? Thanks in advance!

You absolutely could get pregnant. Also, Breastfeeding is not birthcontrol!

My OB told me a story about a patient that he had that got pregnant TWO WEEKS after giving birth.
Can you imagine? yowza!

If it didn't physically hurt (which it sounds like it didn't), then you don't have to worry about it being too soon to have sex. However, it isn't good for your body to have two c-sections so close together, so you should definitely use protection and be careful.

And yes, you can definitely get pregnant. A good friend of mine got pregnant 6 weeks after delivering baby # 1 and 10 weeks after having baby # 2 (both vaginal births, no breastfeeding). Hopefully that won't be the case for you. Also, pulling out is NOT effective birth control either (same friend got pregnant with # 4 that way!). To really be safe, you need to be using condoms, the pill, IUD, etc.

You could definitely get pregnant ... even while breastfeeding. I had a friend get preggo when her son was 8 months old. She was breastfeeding and hadn't gotten a period yet. It happens!! When I went in for my 6-week checkup my doctor told me that you would be surprised how many women come in for their 6 week checkup and are already pregnant due to the misconseption that they cannot get pregnant so soon after having a baby and/or because they are breastfeeding. If you don't want another child yet (which would be crazy close but happens!!) make sure you are definitely use protection.

Two issues here - one is sex after C-section, the other is pregnancy after birth. Getting pregnant after a c-section is no different than after a vaginal delivery.

6 weeks is the usual time frame for having sex but everyone's healing is different. I agree you can't see the internal healing, and just because the incision looks good on the surface doesn't mean that the deeper healing of muscles and abdominal tissue and uterine wall is complete. It's wise to wait until your check-up, but the horse is already out of the barn on that one! When you see your doctor, tell him/her - but don't feel guilty as you won't be the first woman to have had post-partum sex!

And yes, the post-partum bleeding is totally separate from your period. It's hard to know when your hormones will settle and your ovaries will start to produce eggs again - so you should assume you are fertile all the time. It's unlikely but still possible that you can get pregnant. I'm not sure that puts your mind at east, frankly. Breastfeeding affects fertility, but doesn't eliminate the possibility - witness all the nursing moms who get pregnant anyway. I'm not sure the home pregnancy tests are that accurate this soon. Depending on your beliefs, you can go to a plan B and take the morning after pill if you really don't want to be pregnant. But that's an emergency back-up and you need to go back to regular contraception starting today.

Hang in there - remember that your hormones are still affecting your emotions and you have a lot going on with a new baby and a body trying to get back into balance, and a husband you want to reconnect with. Good luck.

Hi! Ok, the likelihood of you being pregnant is pretty slim - especially if you're breastfeeding - I'd say you're about 98% safe (?!) - but the true answer is yes, there is a possibility - but I would say it is EXTREMELY small. Call your doc and make an appointment so you can get a prescription for the mini-pill (at least that's what they call it here - sorry, I live in Europe). It's a contraceptive pill that's safe to take while breastfeeding, you just have to be sure to take it at the exact same time everyday (it's only got like a 2 hour window, unlike the "normal" pill which has a 12 hour window). Try not to stress too too much. (And congrats - on the baby and on getting your mojo back!) ;-)

I would mention the sex to your doctor, too, just in case it really was too early and you aren't completely healed. Usually, you are told to wait 6-8 weeks for a reason. But I think your husband is pretty lucky! ^_^

When in doubt, you can ALWAYS get pregnant unless you already are or you don't have sex. There is no other 100% guarantee. It's probably not likely only a month after giving birth, but it could happen. Knowing that, you can proceed as you wish. Good luck.

We also had sex after 4 or 5 weeks with both babies (I had a vaginal delivery, so we did that as soon as I possibly felt ready). I was breastfeeding and my doctor was not worried but did do pregnancy tests at my 6 week appointment to make me feel better. You can ovulate sooner so invest in some condoms. :)

Just because you bled for 3 1/2 weeks straight does not mean that you haven't had your period mixed in with that. It is VERY possible that you could get pregnant at this point in time. Hope all goes the way you want, but just remember that they will be your little miracles regardless of how close in age they are.

Are you breastfeeding? If so, it's not likely, but anything can happen.

Yes, ask your Doctor....
after a c-section... it takes about 6 weeks, to 'heal'. You also should have had a follow-up exam, after your c-section....A Doctor, usually advises a patient how long after the surgery, you can get pregnant again.

The body, takes about 1 year to adjust after having a baby.
many people get pregnant within that time period.
After a c-section... the internal incision/sutures have to heal too, and scar tissue develops.... all part of the process of 'healing' internally.
What you see externally, your incision... is external. Internally... there are layers of tissue/your uterus that is sutured as well... either with staples, or suturing. So, internally, you need to heal as well.
I don't know the ramifications, of getting pregnant after a C-section... within the 6-week or 1 year post-birth.
You need to ask your Doctor.
You just had your c-section... 1 month ago.

You can get pregnant even if you don't have your period yet, and while breastfeeding or not.

I have had 2 c-sections... my Doctor, advised me to not get pregnant so soon after. My post-op recovery, per a c-section, per my Doctor, is 6-weeks. A c-section... is major surgery. The tissues/sutures have to heal and meld together again etc. Don't want the sutures to split open etc.

ALSO ask your Doctor, since you want your children "at least a year apart"... how long you need to wait... before trying to conceive again.
My Doctor, gave me birth control pills, after my c-section at my follow-up appointment/exam.

Ultimately, ask your Doctor.... and about anything about conceiving... PER a c-section.

The issue here, to me, is: IF you are pregnant so soon after a C-section... how will that impact your body/healing.... etc.

all the best,
Susan

I agree with the other mom's but wanted to say that your husband is a lucky man. I had zero desire for weeks after my doctor gave me the go ahead.

Most woman, not all....but most woman who are %100 breastfeeding do not ovulate until they wean their baby. Like when I was BF my 2nd we didn't start using protection until she was a year and I started to wean. It still took a whole month after I was completely done nursing her before my period came back. But I also have a couple friends that went in for their 6 week check up after having their baby only to find out they were pregnant again! So it is possible to get pregnant this soon but your probably ok. Just take a test in a couple weeks just to be on the safe side.

Yes it is possible for you to get pregnant. When you go in for your checkup have them test you, but if I were you I would keep testing untill I got a period (buy cheap dollar store tests...they are the same if they aren't expired). Good Luck.
