Too Much Fruit and Veggies --> Too Much Poop-->diaper Rash?

my almost 11 month old has been having a bad rash for the past few weeks. She poops 3-5 times a day (some small some big), and my mom thinks that the rash is caused by too much poop because I feed her too much fruit and veggies - could this be the real cause? what should I feed her instead? she doesn't eat plain chicken, only mixed with veggies, and she hasn't really learned to eat pieces of food - she's still on purees, so I don't know what else could be the main source of her (non-breastmilk)diet other than fruits and veggies? should I try white potato and white rice?
Thanks!

So What Happened?

first of all, thanks everyone for your suggestions, I'll try to implement what I can.
But I also had a mini crisis - I let her air out and since it's hard to keep her cooped up, I let her crawl around our bedroom. My mom completely freaked out that I let her go on the carpeting without a diaper because she might get an infection.
Any thoughts?

Hi R.,
At 11 months, she needs to be eating something other than just fruit and vegetables. At a year old, food rather than milk, becomes her primary nutrition, and she needs to be eating protein rich foods and whole grains as well. I would also give her more opportunities to eat table food.
Perhaps some triple paste would help to clear up the rash. Good luck

R.,
Too much citrus = diaper rash from my experience. If you are drinking citrus, that follows also. (I think you are still breastfeeding).

Gah, you don't have to do a lot of veggies/fruit at this point but if she is loving it, can't see reducing/eliminating it. If she is not liking most of it, reduce what she doesn't like and go from there. She gets plenty of protein from breast milk, and your milk will continue to fill in any gaps during the day of any vitamins she didn't receive for as long as she (and you) are willing to nurse.

Potato and rice? No, I wouldn't go that route. Variety of veggies, pureed, would be the best way to go - continuing to do the 3 day rotation of anything new for allergies of course.

Good luck!
M.

She can be having this problem due to 'specific' fruits or veggies.. i know EVERY time my daughter would eat or drink ANYTHING apple.. she would poop ALOT more and then get a rash.. she has since grown out of that now.. she is 4 now.. but when she was that age i couldnt give her anything with apples because we ALWAYS had a problem.. so maybe try to weed out what that specific thing is thats causing the problem :0).. hope this helps!

at this age.. you should be introducing cheerios.. baby cookies.. she should be eating a little more solid stuff too. try to stay away from acidy foods. try mashed potatoes with a little chunks in them. don't give her juice.. just formula.. how about oatmeal or rice cereal.. is really good. let he chew on an end of italian bread. hard and crusty.. buy the gerber biter biscuits.. give her more water too. how about a cut up and you can mash it a little .. banana..

Definitely the reason. At 11 months, she should be getting much more than just fruit and veggies. The other other thing you've said you've tried is chicken. What about cheese, bread, hamburger / red meat, fish.... etc. Rice is definitely fine. She should be eating pieces of food, too, not just purees. To reduce the poops relatively quickly, feed her "binding" foods - bananas, rice, toast, and applesauce.

Does she eat cereal? I say keep feeding the fruits and veggies, but be sure to balance it with whole grains and protein. Also remember that some fruits, like banana are binding, while others, like apples are, well, not. Cheese is also binding. Another thing I learned was to apply the rash ointment of your choice and to cover it with vaseline...the vaseline itself won't help the rash, but it provides a protective layer to prevent the rash from worsening and to allow the cream to do it's job.

I would definitely say it is time to to start adding more foods. My daughter is 11 and a half months and loves feeding herself finger foods. she has 6 teeth (as of last week). She had diaper rash when teething. Now she eats many table foods cut in tiny pieces. In the last few weeks she has loved spaghetti, lasagna, latkes, meatloaf, pancakes, etc. She also eats baby feeds like purees, cheerios, baby cookies, etc. The more things I let her try the more excited she seems to be about about eating.

All I know is that you need to buy some triple paste... and not the generic! This stuff will cure the diaper rash right up and prevent her from having diaper rash in the future.

R.,

I am assuming by poop you mean diarhea? Regular bowel movements can occur 1-3 times a day. If your child has diarhea then you should check with your pediatrician.

Also, fruits and veggies are great, but I would add other types of food to her diet. Brown rice would be more nutritious than white, some meat, beans, oatmeal, ect. If the change of diet doesn't help you should speak to your pediatrician.

Good luck,
R.

she may be teething. that will give you diaper rash as well.
lay off on some of the fruits, but the veggies should be fine.

To add to what other mothers have said, perhaps she spending too much time in the soiled diaper. (I had that problem with one of the sitters I used for my son. Got rid of her and the rash went too.)

I would definitely add cereal, proteins, brown rice and sweet potatoes to her diet. She is almost a year old and needs to be introduced to foods with texture and tastes too. She doesn't seem to have anything binding in her diet. Hope this helps.
