Toilet Trained but Peeing in the Bathroom

My daughter is just three and has been fully trained for about 6 months. She only has accidents when she is in a play situation and doesn't want to leave to go to the bathroom (happens very rarely). In the past two weeks she will say, "I have to go to the potty" and when she gets there, she will stand on her foot stool and pee on it with her pants on. Then she will splash the pee with her feet. I have threatened to put diapers back on her (she says no - diapers are for babies) yet she continues to do this once or twice a day. I think she is just realizing that pee can be fun to splash in but if I have to change her and mop up once more - ugh.... Any suggestions? Oh, and there has been nothing going on in her world - no changes, etc. Also, this never happens in pre school or at day care! Thanks in advance for the help!

So What Happened?

The whole issue seems to have passed. We are back to good potty practices. Thanks for all of the responses!!

Let her know that if she wants to play in the water, you would set up a small tub with water in it "to do the dishes". Continue to let her know that she needs to pee on the toliet/potty.

Try to find out WHY she is doing this--don't assume it's because it's fun or whatever. She may be having trouble getting her clothes off, waiting too long or yes she might just want to splash :D Once you know the reason, it'll be easier to trouble shoot and avoid it.

If the clothes are difficult for her to get off, try to go with easy on off outfits.
If she's waiting too long, try prompting her.
If she wants to splash, ask her to tell you when she wants to splash and get a bucket of water or something for her to play in.
If she wants to pee like a boy, you could have her squat over the toilet/potty instead of sitting.

Maybe she has seen the boys have accidents or pee on the floor at school. When my son would poop in his pants...well after he had learned to go on the potty...I had him take his clothes off and dump the poop and clean up after himself...he didn't like that and after a few times he stopped going in his pants. Now at the age of 7 when he misses he is still responsible for cleaning up after himself...that keeps him in check. Have her clean up the mess and then go directly into a tub to wash herself...she may not want to do it again....good luck.

One suggestion is not to tell her you are going to do something and then not do it. She knows you aren't going to. Also, I wouldn't put diapers back on to try to teach a lesson. She may go the opposite direction and decide she'll just stay in the diapers. I also wouldn't have her clean it up. My ped is absolutely against this.

Can you go in with her and make sure she sits on the toilet? Does she NEED the step stool? If she can wiggle her way onto the potty, I'd remove the step stool from the room.

Hi JC,
She's continuing to do it because you're allowing her to, without consequences. I think the first thing I'd do is not allow her privacy in the bathroom anymore. Let her know that due to her behavior, she will need to be accompanied to the bathroom and watched while she does her business in there. I would also have her do her own cleaning up, maybe it won't be so much fun to have to change herself and clean up her mess. If she thinks that diapers are for babies, let her know that peeing anywhere but the toilet is for babies, and if you threaten a consequence, you do need to make good on it.
Good luck!

Very easy....go with her to the bathroom and undress her and sit her on the potty. I own a gymnastics school and can tell you that parents assume that because their child is potty trained that it is appropriate to let them go to the bathroom by themselves. It is not. If you want to make sure that you are not mopping the floor and changing her clothes, then you will have to go in with her to monitor her everytime until she is truly ready do it on her own.

Hey mom,

Sounds like she is just having some Fun LOL

Nothing to worry about

BUT obviously we want to stop this.

I suggest reverting back to training mode which YES is annoying aswell

Suggest a treat of reeses peices candies, for one full day of dry pants.

Or each time she pees without incident she gets some sort of treat.

It works....

If she is just doing this for fun, which is what it sounds like and she is doing it in the only place where she can get away with it. Stop letting her get away with it. It will be much less fun when she has to help clean up the pee, help wash out the clothes with the pee on them and re-dress herself. Make her help you clean up the mess and move it into cleaning it up herself. It will be much less fun then and will probably stop. Right now there are no repercussions, nothing bad happens when she pees on the floor. Make something bad happen and after cleaning up the pee, she should start getting a time out too. It will quickly stop being fun to splash in.

she could have seen a boy going to the bathroom at school or something.. and see that they stand up.. and they leave their pants on. Tell her only boys go the bathroom like that.. that girls are lucky they get to sit. tell her boys stand up... but it's really not fun.. it's yucky and you get wet. Hoope this helps. good luck
