He's old enough to sleep w/ a pillow. My son also took to sleeping w/ pillows and did so everytime (still helps him to settle down to sleep now at 4). It may help him to transition to the pillow to sleep on his own.
My son is 26 months old. I have recently converted his crib to a toddler bed. He absolutely loves it and made the transition very well. Occasionally, he will wake up early and crawl into bed with me and my fiance. Now he is obsessed about sleeping with a pillow. Is it safe to let him sleep with a pillow? He sleeps with his baby blanket, a regular blanket, 2 handy manny stuffed animals and a toy car, and now he wants to add in a pillow. He won't fall asleep without the items mentioned above though, what should I do? Pillow or no pillow?
Thank you so much everyone! I was so nervous and wasn't sure if I should or shouldn't give him a pillow. I am trying to limit the amount of stuff he takes to bed with him, and now it might be easier since he wants a pillow. I'm going to go out today and get him a small, flat pillow. Thank you again! You were all very helpful!

I gave both my kids pillows around 18 mos. I'd give it to him. The risk of SIDS has way past at this point.
My third son will be 26 months old. He has been sleeping with a pillow, make it almost flat. Because they are small and a puffy or thick pillow will be uncomfortable. It was dangerous when they were small and can't get up themselves and that was how they can suffocate with blankets and things in their cribs. If he's sleeping in a toddler's bed and is able to get up on his own or whatsoever, then he can sleep with a pillow. You may find him sleeping on top of the pillow which is not unusual. Children are like us, some like very soft beds, others like hard beds. Congrats on his transition to toddler's bed.
I will make choose one or two things to have in the crib with him. He has too many and can be dangerous especially that toy car.
If he sleeps with all of that stuff, a pillow isn't going to make any difference. The sleep recommendations for SIDS reduction are aimed at infants.
I have three children. All of them had pillows by this age.
the pillow is not a problem -- my son has one too at this age. they can move around so its not a suffication hazard anymore!! good luck!
My son has slept with a pillow in his crib since he was 18 months old. I just found a very small pillow for him to use. Sometimes he sleeps on it, sometimes it's more just an object in the crib.
I put my daughter in a toddler bed at 27 months and I did give her a small pillow. I probably could have just gotten a very thin (i.e. not a lot of down) pillow, but I found a small child-size pillow (it's probably for a small decorative pillow). Just don't get anything too thick or it may be uncomfortable.
my son moved into a toddler bed at the same age. i got him a toddler size pillow at babies r us.
Hi D.. My girl is 18 months and has been sleeping with a pillow for the past 3 or 4 months. A full size twin pillow (the kind adults sleep in), except the pillow is very thin. I was told that as long as the child is old enough to turn from side to side on their own, it's ok if they want a pillow. I never had any problems, and never noticed my girl stuffing her face into the pillow either. She sleeps on her tummy most of the night, with her head to the side. My suggestion is try it and observe your baby a few nights. I'm sure you know his sleep positions and how he turns at night, so hopefully that will give you a piece of mind. Best of luck, and don't worry, he's big enough for it!
Oh, one more thing. I preferred a full size pillow which reaches from one side of the crib to the other. This prevents the possibility of the child slipping their head off the pillow on either side (onto the mattress), which in turn minimizes the chance that either side of the pillow will end up in his face. If you use a smaller pillow, he may slide down on either side and the pillow may block his face.
