Toddler Yeast Infection - Monroe,WA

My daughter had double ear infections and she was put on antibiotics last Thursday. She got a bit of diarrhea because of it, so her bum got red - thought it was from the diarrhea on Friday. I just kept on with the yogurt, which she eats regularly anyway, and put diaper cream on. I also just started giving her probiotics last week. The redness didn't look any better by Saturday afternoon/evening, so I thought she had a yeast infection. I took her to the walk-in on Sunday and they said it was yeast, just in the first stage - I caught it very early apparently... Who knew!? Well, she's been on Nystatin since Sunday and I let her run around naked about 75% of the day so it gets nice and dried out. Today, Thursday, it doesn't look much better to me. - maybe a tad less red. It doesn't seem to bother her. I ask if it's "owie" and she says it isn't and she's not itching or anything (she was itching on Saturday and Sunday - so, clearly, the cream is helping the itching). Could it be something else? Could I be doing something more? Should I call the doctor again?

What can I do next?

Both daughters have had this. My toddler also had it recently, likely due to antibiotics for an ear infection. My doc said to use clotrimazole (sp?), which is in both yeast infection creams and in athlete's foot creams. The cream for athlete's foot is the exact same and is way cheaper. Ask the pharmacist, they'll help you pick something out. Just put the cream on when you change her (or after she goes potty, if diaper trained), and it will eventually go away.
Good luck!

my son got this a lot.. so we made sure to give him LOTS of water to flush his system out .. additionally, be careful of too much yogurt in that whether naturally system or artificial, SWEET in and of itself can make yeast grow... as can peanut butter and too much fruit.. yeast thrive on molds (which you can't see on peanut butter) but can be there and too much sugar (even natural) can make yeast go bonkers....... :) yeast starts on the inside .. often people;s approach is to cure it from the outside..... which although it does help, it doesn't always offer permanent relief unless you tackle it from the inside too.... hence, cleanse the body with water...
I have found that after drinking lots of water (until the urine runs clear) and on a constant basis, the yeast seldom creeps in... this even as an adult who has had yeast infections..
best of luck

Since she isn't hurting or itching, I'd give it more time. In addition to getting rid of the yeast her skin has to heal. I'm guessing you're looking at skin that is still irritated.

The Nystatin did nothing for my son while on antibiotics. And we went through 3 different creams. See if you can find MotherLove Diaper Cream and Thrush (some combination of that). It is olive oil based and the only thing that seemed to work on the yeast for me. You can buy it at Whole Foods, or something similar, or online. I think it is motherlove.com, or just google motherlove.

When a child or even an adult is prescribed an anti biotic and have been on it for a while it can create a yeast infection (candidis). It does take time to clear especially if your child is still in diapers at times. This only causes warmth and thats what the yeast craves. Once her antibiotics are finished and you keep using the cream you will notice it will clear in no time. If it doesn't definetly take her back to the doctor. I'm quite sure it will work though. You should soon notice a difference in the redness and nystatin is a great product for a yeast infection. Sometimes it appears on the bottom and sometimes it will appear in the mouth. In the mouth her tongue will get white and you will notice little white spots inside the sides of her mouth which again would be treated with Nystatin drops. Not to worry mommy it will clear.

If it keeps going on and the cream is not helping at all take her to her dr and have them run a strep culture on her. My kids had a rash but its a bright red round rash and it wouldnt go away but it was painful to them and I never heard of rectal strep until they both tested positive for it. Having her on antibiotics though recently I would assume a yeast rash as well but if it doesnt go away, strep could be to blame.

I just went through a similar situation with my daughter. I noticed a red spot that wouldn't go away. The doc said it was a yeast infection. It has taken awhile for it to fade away. It's kind of a challenge b/c they are in diapers all the time. That area is warm & perfect for that kind of infection. Just make sure to change her diapers a little more than normal. My doc said to put it on her 4 times a day & keep her extra dry. If it really isn't looking much better than you may want to call the doc to see how long it usually takes to completely go away.

Try using a hair dryer on low to ensure she is completely dry before putting on the Nystatin. Also, be sure to spread the cream beyond the margin of the rash. My doctor also recommended that I apply a layer of diaper cream over the Nystatin (I was using Butt Paste or Aquaphor)

I used a hair dryer regularly during diaper changes and NEVER had a diaper rash that wasn't caused by antibiotics. It worked great and I rarely used diaper cream of any sort, as well.

We also dealt with a lot of ear infections and the complications with antibiotics...it could easily take a week or more for her to heal. Just something for future reference, our ENT recently prescribed Bactrim for an ear infection. It did a great job of clearing it up AND there was no diarrhea(she's been on SO many)! Ask your doctor if it would be appropriate in your situation.
