Toddler with Possible Vision Problems...

I have recently been noticing my 2 1/2 year old squinting when looking at distant objects. I was wondering if anyone else has children of this age with vision problems and how they diagnosed it, or if it even is diagnosable at this age.

I have a call into the pediatrician, but am awaiting a phone call back...

What can I do next?

My daughter was diagnosed at 2 years old with "far sighteness". Her right eye was turning in toward her nose while watching tv. At first I thought she was doing it deliberately...but it became more and more frequent. She saw an optomologist who fitted her with glasses and she is now (at 14 years old) near sighted and wearing contacts. They can detect vision problems in children around 2 years old. Good luck!

You can have your childs vision checked even as an infant. I did not know this and didn't discover my sons vision problems until he was 7 year old. I found a wonderful pediatric eye doctor who has done wonders for my son and hundreds of other children as well. Her Phone number is ###-###-####. Good luck and I pray for all the best for your child.

I have not had problems with my kids at toddler age, but I do know that their eyes are always changing. Your doctor will probably refer you to an eye doctor for further review of your child's eyes.

Do you have a boy or a girl? Do you know if you are expecting a boy or girl for the 2nd one? How exciting!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A.,
Of my six kids three of them wear glasses and we noticed the second child when she was about 3.. All you need to do is take your child to have an eye exam the office will test them with objects that they can recongnize. Its harmless and it is very important to get them checked out early.. Let me know if you need the name of an eye dr.

Hi A.,

I just wanted to let you know that they check the babies eyesight at birth. So, if they can do that, then I would deffinately have the eyes checked. You know your child the best. If you think there is a problem or concern get it checked out. If your pediatrician can't help call an eye specialist, preferrable a pediatric optomologist. anything is possible. I had my 11 year old checked just last year and the doctor mentioned possibly that she could have been deprived oxygen at birth and that can effect the developement of the eyes. How he could tell that 11 years later is amazing to me. the stuff they can do now adays is amazing.

Hopefully its an over reaction, but to find out now rather than later can effect everything from learning skills and other developmental issues.

Good luck!

Yes that is something that you should get checked out. When my sister was about 6 or 7 months old my mother noticed that my sister was having problems with her eyes staying straight so we took her to the eye doctor and they did a number of things before she ended up wearing glasses, but she has beenwearing glasses since she was about 6 or 7 months old and she will be turning 18 next month and she still wheres her glasses right now today.

Hello, So sorry that you are having to worrying about this. My little girl was born with one eye crossed. My grandfather is the ONLY person that belived she had a problem however at 8 mo old her Dr. sent us to a specilst and she confirmed in deed my little girl had a eye problem. So we tried glasses that didnt work,so we tryied patches but again no luck she just wouldn't keep them on.So off to surgery we went. They cut the nerve in her eye and that was to make it stright. But guess what 3 weeks later it had turned in again. So then we got her glasses yet again still she just wouldn't keep them on.Now she is 4 yrs old and now has 20/80 vison and back to surgery we go.I must say this is the hardest thing we have ever been though. But do demand seeing someone that knows the eyes well. They say if the problem isn't helped by age 5 there is little hope for improvment.Best of luck to you.P.s the Dr. I use is Dr.Kelly from Eye Q Vison care in Fresno.

Dear A., I called my mother in law after I read your posting, she and her husband have an optometric practice in hanfod and I read her your posting over the phone, she said you should take your little one to an optomotrist (Spelling? you think I'd know). She said to ask first if they take little ones, some specialize in children and some wont take them at all, she also said good luck. Their office is awesome and they take kids, I'm not sure where you live but if you're not far I reccomend them. their office number is ###-###-#### ask for joni kirby or Dr. Kirby is who will see your child...good luck G.

Hi, I just recently went through this with my daughter, although she is 7 (turned 7 on 12/8). Anyways, there were NEVER any signs of vision problems with my daughter. I just decided to take her to the Optometrist because our health insurance paid for it. I took her to a "Pediatric Developmental Optometrist", and come to find out, she had the worst vision he had seen in a long time and possibly needed bifocals, etc..etc. Mind you, she had been screened in school for 2 years, her pediatrician screened her, but they never found anything abnormal. My pediatrician referred us to a Pediatric Opthamologist, through Children's Hospital, and he said that it was never caught because she had learned how to compensate for it. (She had lived like this for 6 years). Anyways, he said she is definately not the worst. She's just a kid who needs glasses. She does have a fairly strong prescription for someone her age, but he sees that "getting better with time, as her eyes elongate and change shape." Anyways, I would highly suggest getting her eyes checked. I was please with both my optometrist and opthamologist, but that's just a total personal thing. I have noticed that since my daughter has gotten her glasses (about 2-3 months now) she is much happier in school, enjoys reading, doing homework, etc. Her teacher even comments on what a difference there is. I have done a lot of research/reading and everything I've read says that you should really have their eyes checked as early as 6 months. Anyways, good luck!!!

I have had glasses and or contacts since I was three. If my parents hadn't taken me in then I would have bee crossed eye for my entire life. So I highly reccomend getting his/her eyes checked. It is true that their eyes are constantly changing, and they may be just fine, but trust your instincts!! If you need a reccomendation I know a great doc in Oak Harbor. She has had a lot of experience with kids.
Good luck.

My son used to go to Dr. Mary Grant on Pecos (between Flamingo and Desert Inn). She ONLY sees children so everything in the office is geared to little ones. They cary glasses small enough for infants (tiny little ones). I'm not sure if your insurance would cover her, but you might check into it. She was terrific with my son (he's old enough to go to a regular eye doctor now)
