Ok mamas...so last night my 2 yr old DS woke up about 3 hrs after he went to bed. I noticed he had these red splotches all over his body and there were little skin colored bumps inside them. My poor baby was itching like crazy, obviously making him miserable. So, hubby went and got him some stuff to relieve the itch and I was finally able to put him back to bed a couple hrs later. He woke up this morning fine...rash was all gone except for a couple little spots and they didnt seem to be bothering him. I figured it was just the new baby wash I used on him the night before. Figured that was that. Well...now tonight same thing! He woke up a couple hrs after I put him down and he is AGAIN covered in this rash! Could it be something in his bed?? He shares a room with his sister and she hasnt had any kind of rash or anything. We havent changed detergent or anything like that. Im at a loss! I just feel so bad for my little man. Im going to be making an appointment for him tomorrow to see what the doc thinks. Any ideas?? Thanks so much!

Edited: I guess I should also mention that the rash is all over...like his belly, back, hands, arms, legs, and feet. Thanks for the responses so far!

What can I do next?

Check for bed bugs.. my cousins had this going on too... and they found out it was bed bugs.. I know NO FUN! But i would certainly check it out.. look for small black dots on mattress, if a wood bed, check in all the crevices where the joints meet, and check the top of the curtains thats where they hide. I hope that is not it, but they are sneaky little shits.

Hi Jen,

Toxins can build up in your body. It's possible that the laundry detergent that you use has just gotten to the point where his body can't fight it anymore. Try a natural one. Wash his sheets with a tea tree oil based wash or drop a couple of drops in the wash. Tea tree oil (especially high grade oil i.e.melaleuca alternafolia oil) will break down the toxins and they will wash out of the laundry. This may not be his problem but it will at least eliminate it as a possibility.

Hope this helps...

This was happening to my DD (she's 3) and it turned out that she was irritated by the heat at the top of her diaper and it was causing bumps on her butt and back. We fold that part down now and it has helped a lot.

sounds like hives. warm water and body heat tend to make them worse at night. give him some Benedryl. If its something that he's eating, it doesn't necessarily have to be something new. My son developed a food allergy 6m after he started eating a certain food.

pay attention to what he's eating at night...sound like what happened to my son before we found out he was allergic to eggs. is he eating something every night before bed? his rash was all over his body and flared up not too long after eating and was really nasty looking & itchy. i see you're in girard and there's an awesome pediatric allergy dr in erie if you need one.

I'd try washing all his bedding (including blankets and pillows, pajamas) in sensitive detergent and then run through a second wash with just water (or the Tea Tree Oil the other post suggested). You could also give him a plain water bath for a night and see if that helps.

When I am stressed or very overtired I tend to itch all over (but no rash). Benedryl helps me a lot in that situation. I don't recall the age recommendations on the box so you might want to check.

What does it feel like? My youngest gets eczema really bad and from what you describe thats what h look like when he flares up it's very itchy. Try to only bath him once a week twice at the most, eucerin cream (th thick stuff in th tub not the pump) twice a day, benedyrl for when he's itchy, and if it doesnt start to clear up he may need dome hydrocortisone cream for it. I should add that this time of the year he gets it head to toe too.
