Toddler UTI & Soap

My 2 1/2 yr old daughter has keratosis pilaris. For those of you that are not familiar with keratosis, it is a hair folicle condition that is hereditary(can't be cured either) that makes the skin real bumpy...looks like a rash. It usually goes along with excema and skin is sometime itchy. Therefore, to help the best treatment is to use soaps, lotions, & creams that moisturize the skin. Since she was a new born I used Johnson & Johnson's Head to Toe Body Wash, but during the winter months it really dried out her skin bad. So I decided to change to the Equate brand of Dove (which is what I use, but of course I take showers). That was a BAD decision on my part. I guess I didn't realize how sensitive she could be to this change and she got a really bad UTI. She is doing better now, but don't ever want to use that soap for her baths again. So I'm asking for suggestions on types of soaps that are sensitive, yet helps with dry skin. Thank you!

What can I do next?

For my daughter whom has uticaria and keratosis pilaris the only thing that haw worked is Cetaphil. They have cleanser and lotion in pumps as well as bar soap. We buy in bulk at Costco and there are coupons always avaliable online at cetaphil.com. Best of luck to you!

Have you tried the Johnson and Johnson's with the lotion in the body wash for babies? My daughter is very sensitive in this area as well and this soap does not break her out, and it doesn't dry out her skin. The other option, and this is probably going to sound really strange but this is what my MIL told me since she also has the same soap issues, she uses Summer's Eve Body Wash for sensitive skin. I aksed her about the Cetaphil soaps and she said that nothing has worked as good as Summer's Eve, it doesn't irritate her skin, doesn't cause her to get any infections, and she raves about how well it works for her. She uses it as her body wash, not just as a feminine hygiene product. I hope this helps!

We use plain glycerin soap. No dyes, no scents, pure. I get it at Whole Foods, it's the 365 (store) brand. I have extremely sensitive skin and it's the only stuff I can use. It's great for our daughter too. I made the switch this winter after using things like Dove Sensitive, etc., and I usually have to lather on the lotion during the winter. This winter though, since I've been using the 365 soap, I haven't had to use lotion at all! It's really improved my skin, and it's so gentle.

If her skin needs to stay moisturized, you're probably better off not even using soap, and if you do, use something like a plain glycerin soap. You can wash just using warm water and a washcloth. Maybe even add a little baking soda to her bath water to help sooth the bumps?

Have you heard of Jordan Essentials? They are made in Nixa Mo. There is a Oatmeal, MIlk, and Honey type that is great for dry skin and excema. One reason Nancy, the owner, started making the product was because her husband had a skin problem. They are an all natural product with several different scents, plus a baby care line to.

If you have a soap that works for her, but dries out her skin, have you considered leaving the soap alone and adding cetaphil cream. Our boys have very sensative skin and the dermatologist recommended it. You can get it at walmart, and since it is cream, it doesn't have the oils that can irritate. It worked great for our boys. Good luck.

My daughter used to get UTI's all the time, when I was using Johnson's products. I tried the Aveeno baby wash- and she didn't get the uti's as often, but she still got a few. I switched to an organic baby wash that I found online (www.ciaobellabody.com). It smells good and she hasn't had a single one since. It is a little pricey- but totally worth it. Good luck!

My son also has this. Even though he is almost 6, I found the Aveeno baby soap to be the best. It's liquid, so it's easy for him to wash himself. It is a bit more expensive, but check their website for coupons. Be carful with washclothes as well because they can be a little "rough" and actually irritate the skin worse. I found some bath mits in the baby section at Target that are wonderful! Very soft, and a 3 pack is under $5.00. Our MD also recomended Eucerin calming lotion which really helps! Winter can be very tricky since it's always worse that time of year. If you can get away with it, try bathing her every other day, or every 2 days.

Good Luck with everything!!

S.,
There is an entire baby line from Arbonne that is wonderful for people with keratosis pilaris. Its the ABC line- everything from hair and body wash to lotion and diaper creme. I have some great testimonials including before and after pictures from people(even little ones) who have used the line with keratosis pilaris. If you would like to see them or want more information, feel free to send me a private message.

None of my kiddos have had trouble w/ UTIs, thankfully *knock on wood*. That said, I would also suggest Cetaphil soap and the lotion . Two of my 3 kids (5G, 3B, 1 1/2B) also have keratosis pilaris. My youngest son has EXTREMELY dry skin and the dermatologist recommended it for him, as did another derm. for my hubby. The lotion especially seems to help with the bumpiness. I also found a scrubby glove (not sure what exactly to call it) at Walmart or Target that worked really well for my dtr's arms, until one of the kids misplaced it. =P Good luck!

I heard Aveeno with the Oatmeal in it is supposedly good. My little sister (although she is an adult now) had problems with regular soap when she was young.

My youngest has excema and a skin allergy to nickel. She uses the Aveeno body wash. It has helped her and doesn't dry her skin out. Hope that was helpful. Good luck and God Bless.

It's been a few years since I used it but Aquaphor body wash did wonders on my daughters skin when she was an infant. I also used Aquaphor ointment for diaper rash and dry spots on the face. They all worked great!

I have a skin condition that results in red itchy bumps and dry skin. My dermatologist told me to use the white Dove beauty bar soap and no other kind. He said everything else dries out your skin. He also suggested that I use Eucerin lotion all over my body. I can't speak as to whether or not dove beauty bars will cause a UTI in a baby. I encourage you to contact a dermatologist and pose this question to him/her. I do know that bubble baths can cause UTI's in babies and that the use of liquid soaps in the bathtub often result in a bubble bath whether that's the intention or not. Good luck.

We also use Cetaphil, but they do have a Wal-Mart/Target brand that's a bit cheaper. Also you can buy one with a pump, then buy refills for the others....which will also save on $. Good luck!

Aveeno makes a cream wash bath soap and after bath lotion that is specific for excema. My daughter had it as an infant and we started using it then and still do at 3 years old. Works wonders!

My youngest son had a misshaped head and wore one of the helmets for 8 months and it was during the summer. We used the Aveno with oatmeal during that time and it really took care of the dry skin and irritation from the helmet. It also took the smell of sweat out of his hair and the helmet and was very gentle to him. It did not burn his eyes when we bathed him.

Cetaphil soap and showers only. My little girl can never get in a tub again per the doc. Sad, but better than having chemical urethritis!

I really don't know what is good for a girl's bath. I have a son. But he has the same condition and so do I. I use Aveeno products for him. Everything I use has to be for sensitive skin. This winter seems to be especially bad for the both of us. I never knew what this condition was called. I never had it checked out by a dermatologist. I just assumed I had big bumpmy folicles. Actually I call them skin bumps, because when they get itchy and I scratch at them, it seems there is nothing but dried skin there. I don't have excema anywhere but on my hands, but my son has mild excema, and this follicle condition showed up this winter, really bad. He has bumpy skin everywhere! I try not to bathe him too much, as that can be overly drying. And the only "moisturizer" I can put on him without him screaming that it stings is vaseline. Anyway, I wish you luck with your daughter. And it is nice to know that this bumpy skin we have actually has a name to it!
