Toddler Rotavirus Help

My 18 month old has had vomiting and diarrhea off and on since Friday. I have two older children who have had rotavirus in the past, so I recognize it, particularly from its distinct odor! But, what I am concerned about this time is that the vomiting seems to keep recurring despite him having had this for about three days now. Usually it is the diarrhea that persists, but he is still having both. While he doesn't appear to be dehydrated, he is certainly sick and not himself. And, today he stopped wanting to drink anything, too. Anybody else had a similar situation with your young children?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much to everyone for your sympathy and great advice. I came down with the virus today and have been trying to just survive with the three kids at home with me! My 18 month old ate some starchy things today and kept it down, except for more diarrhea. I know that the diarrhea will persist for a while, so I am being vigilant on that. He drank a lot today, though, so that made me feel reassured that perhaps we are on the mend. I will being checking in again as things hopefully improve.

Take care to all!

Hi! My kids both had it at the same time when they were 1 and 2. Their doctor at the time told me to give them suckers. Something about the sugar in them helps with the puking and also helps them salivate to reduce the risk of dehydration. My daughter was almost to the point of having to be hospitalized because of possible dehydration, but the suckers really did work and she was able to start drinking a little water and keep it down. I was only giving her about 1 medicine dropper of water every 15 minutes to help keep her from throwing it back up.

I was sitting here reading this and it reminds me of my daughter who had this when she was about 18 months old also. This sounds just like her then. She ended up in the ER because she would not stop vomiting. It was crazy. She did not have diarrhea as bad as my oldest daughter did though. I also felt that she was not dehydrated but she ended up getting fluids and a shot for vomiting. They send me home with phenegen for her. This stuff is nasty and I am sorry that your baby is going through it. My daughter also did not want to drink nor eat. I think your best bet is to call the doctor because babies and toddlers get dehydrated so much faster then we do!

I would get your child into the doctor fast. They may put the child in the hospital for dehydration. that happened to my son and he was still throwing up and the diarrhea for 4 days. He was dehydrated and lost 5 pounds within 4 days. Start giving the child gatorade and take him or her into the doctor fast!!

Wow. My 15 mo old son is just getting over this now. He had it last year too. Anyways he was sent home from school on Monday last week for 2 poopy diapers that smelled like he was sick. He would not eat or drink anything except for his morning and nightly bottle of milk which did not help his poopy diaper.
We tried all flavors of pedilight the pedilight frozen pops. Pretty much anything and everything and still would not eat or drink much of anything. He was not vomiting though. I took him to the ped on Thurday and she said that as long as he was drinking something wethere it be milk or not. She also suggested gataoraide since it tastes better. (more sugar) I did not care about the sugar as long as he would drink something. Actually what worked was he liked the vitamin water that I gave him. Like I said we tried everything. He also started eating yougart-milk based again I know but at least it was calories. We did the danactive with the probotics. He has since gotten back his appitite but is still not 100% perfect yet. Roto-Virus takes like 7-9 days to get over. But if ur little one is still vomiting I would definmatly call the ped. right away as I am sure they will want to see you. Good Luck I know it is tough!

I know of a couple of kids who have been hospitalized for dehydration with rotovirus. It happens quickly - I agree with the other posters, you should talk to your pediatrician today.

Go to the doctor NOW! My niece had this and wound up being hospitilized for over a week. She was so severly dehydrated that they couldn't even find a vein to put the IV into. If they won't stop vomiting and have the diarrea, they need to go to the doc. Is he still having wet diapers or is it just diarrea? If he's not drinking, then he HAS to go to the doctor IMMEDIATELY. Sorry if I sound so urgent. I just know how hard this was for my niece and I hate to see your family go through that.

Signs of dehydration for younger kids is actually rejecting food and water after several spells of vomiting/diarrhea. Also, if your son starts to just "lay around" I would strongly advise taking him to the ER. My daughter had a bad flu bug once and within 24 hours (with the diarrhea/vomiting episodes) was very dehydrated.

Call your doctor...but I'm sure they'll send you to the ER for fluids at this stage. Sometimes when someone is dehydrated, they vomit/have more diarrhea...which makes them more dehydrated.

You can also offer him pedialyte pops (or heck, at this stage, offer him any kind of popsicle).

But, do get him to the ER for fluids, etc.
