My friend's toddler son has recently had two bouts with toxic synovitis, which caused him to limp or have trouble putting any of his weight on one of his legs. You should Google it.

Hi K.,

I'm glad to hear that you're taking your daughter to the doctor. You need to get an informed opinion from someone who has the appropriate medical degree and who can evaluate your daughter first hand, not from a bunch of moms (as wonderful as we all are!) who haven't seen your child, have no first hand means of evaluation, and don't have the necessary medical background to be giving sound advice. BTW, have you ever noticed that your doctor will rarely give advice without seeing you or your child first? This is not just a ploy to get you to pay office visit fees. Good medical practice requires actually seeing the patient (and ordering appropriate tests, if necessary, such as X-rays), not making wild guesses on the basis of very limited information.

Mamas -- please pay attention to this! This is a great website for posting mothering knowledge and lore, and passing on first hand experience. It should NOT be a substitute for informed medical advice -- even from those of us who have good medical backgrounds and are in the healthcare field. I would like to encourage you all to use this resource for making helpful suggestions or offering alternatives AFTER taking your child to see a doctor and getting an informed diagnosis -- not before. Some of the advice I've seen given on this sight is so misinformed as to be dangerous, with the potential for causing more problems and even possibly a fatality.

Getting off my soapbox now -- I wish Mamasource would make this declaration as a disclaimer up front!

K. I don't want to scare you but my now 12 year old son at the time he was 10 was complaining about knee pain. I took him to the doctor and he kept telling me he had growing pains. This was an ongoing thing for 7 months. From his knee the p-n went to his ankles, then one knee and an ankle and they were endless sleepless nights for both of us. That paim was really bad. I know the age difference is a lot but my son was diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL) and on top of having that he had tumors along his spinal cord. He now has a numb right foot and wears a brace everysingle day bcuz he can't stand on that foot or he'll fall. And he also wears a diaper bcuz he has a neurogenic bladder along with bowls movement. To all the mom's out there. Don't believe the doctors when they say its growing pains demand a bone marrow biopsy to make sure its nothing serious cuz everyone I have met had about the same symtoms as my son but of course with out the tumors. Ny sons condition was and is rare. So if your kids complain about leg pain day or night or both take them in and get it checked out. K. sorry but I had to share my story bcuz it ticks me off that some doc's don't pay attention to the important things as far as following up with their patients. Just jot down in a journal type of book and see when the pain happens most at nite, after playing, does she wake up with the pain? Things like that. Hope all is well and that she gets better.

Okay-so, are you scared to death yet? Geez! Okay, my son did have cancer, and had a limp too-BUT, the odds of you having a kid w/ cancer are small. So, DO NOT FREAK OUT! Probably just some weird fall.

was/is she sick? My son had a virus that went into his hip joint at that age. he couldn't walk within 24 hours. he got better within 48 hours. our pediatrician said that it was common amongst children that age. very scary, but harmless.

pediatricians are well aware of it, while regular MD's are not as savvy.

I hope it's just growing pains, but my 18 month old did the same and wound up having a broken leg. They said lots of babies get their legs in between the bars of the crib and can sometime twist the wrong way and snap the bone. I know it sounds bad, but honestly the cast did not slow my little guy down at all. They adapt so easily and the best part is that their bones heal so fast because they are growing so quickly that he was out of the cast very quickly.
Good luck to you.

I also dont want to scare you...my grandaughter was in pain in lower back & knee & at 3&1/2 was diagnosed with "systemic onset juevnille rheumatoid arthritis" an auto immune disease. It can be anything! Just make sure they dont brush her off without really looking at all the possibilities. Hopefully it is not a big deal. Hang in there! C.

My son had severe leg pains after immunizations. The doctors ran every test and said nothing is wrong with him. I tried everything natural and finally found Sunrider-chinese food herbs. It took time to regenerate, but he now lives pain free with a few exceptions. If he eats junk or walks all day at a theme park, it hurts, but that is a lot better than blood curdling screams in the middle of every night.

God Bless!
J.

K.,

She probably fell when you weren't looking.

Do not worry.

The possibility of it being luekemia or arthritis as the other advisers said is very slim -- each of these conditions are extremely rare.

Have it checked out by your doctor.
