Toddler Gagging

My two year old keeps gagging, this has been going on for about 2 months. When I noticed it he would gag about 2-3 times a week, but now it is up to 2-3 times a day. He has only actually thrown up once. But every once in awhile he stops what hes doing, starts to gag and then coughs. And its over as quick as it started. He seems fine besides that but it concerns me. Does anyone know what it could be? Should I take him in to the dr? I just don't know if it's even anything to worry about and I hate it when I take them in to the dr and they say they are fine, or there's nothing they can do for it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! There were some interesting ideas that I hadn't even thought of. I took him in and for now his dr. thinks it is just drainage from allergies that he is choking on, he does have lots of allergy problems and even though he seems fine now, the dr. said it could still be running back in his throat sometimes. So we are giving him some allergy medicine to see if that helps and if it gets worse or continues we will check out some other options.

Just an idea. I have a really bad gag refex and it is usually worse for me when I get a sinous infection. The post nasal drip is what usually starts it. You might want to take him to the doctor and have him checked out.

Hi T.! Did you try calling a 24/7 nurseline? I don't have the number as I am new to Tempe. Although, I think that would be the best thing to do. It sounds like he isn't doing this after eating, so it could very well be something serious. If I were you I would call a nurseline or just go to the ER room.

Hi T.

I highly recommend taking him in to the doctor for an evaluation. They may say it's no big deal, but it's best he gets checked for that. That problem usually could come from neurological issues that cause gag reflexes, so a neurologist would be best. Second, has it been a behavior that he did and you paid attention to it and told him it was funny that now he's doing to get your attention? Also, if all doesn't work, it is good to get him checked by a chiropractor also to make sure the nerves coming out of the neck that control the throat are working normally.... anyhow, please email me and keep me posted.

A question for you... Do you have pets? If so could it be pet hair. I know that sounds crazy but I find pet hair on all of my daughters things (disgusting) but I have no doubt she has ingested a pet hair here and there, they fly through the air. I know sooo gross.

It is always best to check with your DR (even just by phone), but I can tell you I went through this with my daughter from about 18 to a little past her second b-day. She would actually stick her hand in her mouth to gag herself and it REALLY freaked me out. I asked our doctor about it and she said it is just a weird thing some toddlers do for attention. And she said the more I react to it, the more my daughter would gag herself. Of course, once I stopped reacting she became bored (and probably uncomfortable) and stopped.

Good luck!
