Toddler Broke DVD Player - Similar Experiences?

My son will be 2 years old in 2 weeks and last night he broke the portable DVD/TV player. He was going through a phase where he wanted to watch his DVDs and since our main DVD player is broke, the little portable one was all we had (it sits up with an easel). He kept putting his little toys behind it and was told numerous times to stop and even had it taken away over the weekend because he wouldn't listen. We took away his toys last night and he found other stuff to put behind the player and it fell off the table and now won't work. I'm kinda mad at myself for not just taking it away altogether, but what's done is done - my husband and I are annoyed but, it's only material after all, so whatever. It was an accident. The reason I'm writing is I know kids break/ruin stuff (it's the nature of the beast), so I just wanted to feel a bit better by hearing some other mom's stories about things their kids destroyed/broke or whatever. It will make me feel a bit better. I'm sure this won't be the last thing that gets broke, but it's the first 'major' item that got busted. Thanks for your stories!

So What Happened?

Luckily I was able to take the DVD player apart and found a tiny component that broke off one of the circuit boards and I was able to glue it back on and amazingly it worked! But I'm still telling him it's broke. Thanks for all the stories! Now I know what to watch out for to 'hopefully' prevent the next incident. I love hearing everyones tales!

Well, let's see. I have 5-year old twins and I stopped keeping track of everything they've broken since they became mobile. What I can think of, just off the top of my head...

Numerous times - 2 legs on the couch (now propped up with encyclopedias). No matter how many times we try to fix it - new legs, longer lag bolts, etc. - we just can't keep it from breaking again.

Numerous DVDs they've scratched and ruined.

Handles on 2 different crockpots.

Heating vent covers they've somehow removed and bent out of shape.

My laptop - they spilled soda on it and it took 5 weeks to get it repaired. Luckily it was under warranty.

My personal favorite (NOT!) - the oven door doesn't close all the way anymore. I think they used to bounce on it or something. We now have hook and eye fasteners on it trying to keep it closed since tightening the spring inside the door didn't work completely.

You know, looking at the list, only the first two items have happened when I was home. I think I'm going to have to have a talk with hubby! LOL!

my son is only 2 and still new to the game but he has already taken out tons of glasses and plates and even cracked my nose a few times with his craziness

my nephew has gone through countless things to name a few:

1. VCR filled with poker chips a matchbox car and some playing card for good measure.and a PBJ sandwich (things built up before it gave out and my sister had no idea til she took it to be fixed how much stuff had accumulated)

2) couple dozen eggs smashed on the side of the house at age 5

3. the craziest and most death defying was when he was 3. they live int he country so he was out plying in the yard while my sister was hanging up laundry on the line. my nephew said "mom come look" she followed him tot he side of the church next door where he had managed to remove the electrical box with out getting killed. my sister had to pay for the electrician to come out and shut down all the power to reattach it.

It definitely happens, and not just with boys. My middle daughter actually broke the door off the refrigerator when she was 3 or 4. She was pushing it back way farther than it should go and one of the plastic pieces holding it in place snapped. Worst part was that we couldn't immediately get a replacement piece so we had to hunt around trying to find something that would work so we could close the fridge till the part came. Same daughter actually also broke the pantry door off and cracked the frame - still need to fix that. Toys and books galore because they just leave them on the floor and walk over them, which irritates me to no end. The glass on a couple of different shadow box frames, a couch after too much climbing around on it, the list goes on. It is very frustrating, and they *should* know better oftentimes, but it's par for the course. When they're a little older they can start to understand money, so now I tell my older ones if they break "x" that will mean it takes money away from something else fun we could use it for.

My grandpa owns an appliance store, and you would be surprised at what people bring in. VCRs (I guess that's sort of old school) that kids have put peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in, vcrs and dvd players with tons of change in them.....If something is at a kid's level, they're going to try to fit things in it. :-) Our DVD/VCR combo is up where the kiddo cant reach it, simply due to the things I saw people bring in for repair during my summers at Grandpa's store.

My 3 year old just broke our Wii. We now have to pay $75 to send it back to the company so that they can fix it. We can't even figure out what he did, that's what the worst part is! Oh well. Like you said - it's a thing. Kids just don't know their own strength and they get so excited that they're able to do things like big kids.

When my oldest was six, he too broke our portable DVD player, dropped it right down the stairs! When he was two he thought that the VCR was similar to the toaster, yup, he started cramming bread in it!! I couldn't help it, I started laughing. Especially because he basically told on himself by coming and finding me to tell me that his bread was getting toasted(he was pretty frustrated!! heehee, I still giggle about that one) I can't even remember all the things my boys have broken over the years(they are 10 and 6 now). They have probably, between the two of them, broken hundreds of toys!! Though I do remember one really sad accident. When my oldest was about four he wanted to help me unload the dishwasher, he was only suppose to help with the plastic cups, well while I was putting some plates away and my back was turned he decided that he was a big enough boy to help with the "breakables" and he dropped a bowl that my great-grandmother had left me before she died. I did cry(she's the one who taught me to bake, that's why she left me her set of bowls), but I made sure that he knew I wasn't mad at him, just sad that it had happened. Boys break stuff, but it sounds like you already know that. I wouldn't however go run out and get another one right away, he does need to learn that it's gone for a little bit because he kept doing what you told him not to and so he will have to wait before he can get another one. But yes, prepare yourself, he will break more stuff(mine still do!). Heck my husband breaks stuff. I'm not going to lie though, it sucks when stuff gets broken, especially expensive stuff. But just to give you an idea of what my life is like. We are on our fourth portable DVD player, I'm not kidding(though I wish I was). But I do need to tell you that my husband broke number three!! Hope this helps!!

We haven't had a stereo system in over a year because one of our kids dumped their juice in it. My husband had placed the components in a place that was way too easily accssible to the kids and I warned him - many times- that something would happen. Now, it was a very expensive system, and we couldn't and still can't afford to replace it so, we have to do without. At first, I was just angry and annoyed with my husband because " I told you so." Now, I just miss the stereo and CD player. The kids have no clue of course!

Well... I won a NICE flat screen TV at a Company Christmas party three Christmases ago. It's the kind with the DVD player inside... my daughter put one of her Mini DVD's in to watch her Rodeo run and it played just FINE. However, when she pressed "eject"... the TV/DVD player wouldn't recognize the DVD to give it back... so it's still in there (three years later). We'd had the TV 3 days!

MY daughter is almost 19... so she was, what, 16? at the time. So I can't blame it on a Toddler... just a GOOBER! LOL We give her HECK all the time about having a nice DVD player that's had one and only ONE stinking DVD played...
