Toddler BM

I feel really silly posting this question because I'm sure it's nothing, but my husband is worried about it. I forgot to ask the doctor at her last check-up. My 2 year old toddler is very regular with her bm's...every day, almost the same time. The problem is that the bm's are very large! 8 out of 10 times she cries while she's on the potty trying to push them out. (She's been going poopy on the potty since she was about 18 months old...we're still working on the wet diapers.) And yes, I'll admit I've called in my sisters to check the bm's out in the toilet...but only to get their opinion! :-) They were just as amazed as we are. She's never had any issues with her bottom from it and she's always fine after she's done, but it's obvious that it hurts. She loves veggies and fruit so that's not a problem. I don't want to chock her full of sugar to loosen them up either. Is this normal? Any ideas? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

As I thought...my daughter would not cut back on the milk. So, we switched to soy milk and it was a BIG help. She likes the "nilla" milk. Thanks again for all the great advice!

You should call her doctors office and ask them about it. If they are worried about it, they will have you bring her in. I would maybe try a little bit of laxative, to loosen it a little so its not so painful. Poor baby :( , I hope you are able to do something for her. Good luck.

Hi S.,
I've had the same problem with my 2 year old. After some diet testing I realized it was milk making her stools hard. So we switched her to soy milk and it's been no more crying. She still gets cheese and yogurt and all that good stuff but the straight milk seemed to be the problem. So maybe it's something like that. Good luck!

My 2 1/2 yr old daughter has the same problem. She has had this problem from the time she was about 1 year old. We told the Dr. and he just said she didn't know how to go right. THis went on for about 6 months when I finally told him it wasn't getting any better her put her on a perscription laxative/stool softner called Polyethylene Glycol. She has been taking it for a little over a year now and since then no problems as long as she get her dose everyday. I do not think it should be painful for a child to use the bathroom and if it continues may have a negative effect on potty training. I would definatley talk to your doctor. Another thing my doctor told me is to make sure she is getting a lot of pure apple juice because it has a natural stool softening effect and to keep her away from banannas and to peel the apples she eats because the skin can cause constipation.

Hello there S.,

It is a good thing you asked about this. My son also has this problem. It is a sign of constipation. If you don't take care of it now it could get worse and it actually might really hurt her. This is what we've done and it really works. I give my son an 8 ounce sippy cup of 1/2 prune juice 1/4 apple juice, 1/4 water and a drip of mineral oil. It was the only thing that I could get him to drink and it really works, but you have to make sure she gets it in every day and she will have softer stools.. Good Luck-Keep me posted!

My friend babysits a little girl who has this problen she is 4. They stated to give benfiber eneryday in her orange juice and she has no problems now. They can not see or taste it but it HELPS!!! Now my daughter is 8 months old and is constipated and I give her prune juice/warm water or baby food prunes. The DR told me potatoes give constipation so I layed off sweet potatoes and gave prunes and she is better. Good luck!!

Eats lots of natural fiber and drink water. Don't peel apples, the skin is the fiber. As the white in the orange is your fiber. Best of Luck M.

About the size.... My almost 3yr old daughter has what I always thought were the biggest bm's ever! She doesn't act like it hurts though, well sometimes alittle, but no crying. I always wonder, how in the world did that come from her little tummy!!! And yes, I too have showed a few people:) So, the size wouldn't worry me, but if it looks hard or comes out in a few chunks one by one (I know, gross) then she could be constipated. I heard from Dr Oz on Oprah that bm's should fall in the water like a diver (smooth and silent) not a bunch of rocks!!! It's amazing what drives a conversation once your a mom, huh?!?

Try adding a teaspoon or 2 of mineral oil in your toddler's juice. The oil has no taste and will absolutely relieve some of the distress she has with her BM's. We have a little girl at our daycare, who had an awful time with hers and now she gets prune juice with mineral oil every day. She hasn't had a problem since we started this regime at her peditrician's advice

i have a 3 year old daughter. she eats fruit all day it seems. ever since she was born, no joking, she has had a problem with bms. i used to try to help her then i went to the dr. i went to many drs trying to figure out what the problem was and they all said "o, its normal" well, let me tell you pooping 1 or 2 days a week is not normal. i know your daughter does it everyday but i guess the point i am trying to make is eventually i took her to the right dr. he gave her a prescription called glycolax. its a powder you put in her juice or water everyday to help soften the pooh. i know how you feel when your child needs to go but it hurts. mine clogs the toilet everytime because they are so big. i thought it was just out toilet til she did it at a resturant. that was fun, i felt like i was blaming her for something i did. anyway, the glycolax is mild enough to give to her everyday and the dr tells me it will not hurt her tummy. i wasnt looking for a formual i was looking for a cure, ya know? but since ive started useing it on a regular basis her stool has been softer and shes not crying anymore. they say once they realize it doesnt hurt it makes it easier for them to go potty. you just have to ask you dr. good luck! army wife of almost 2, J..

Some people have a larger lower intestinal tract than others. My daughter had the same thing. not to worry. She still has very wide, and large fecal matter it amazes me. You going to have to invest in a more powerful flushing toilet. My daughter is now 23 and is constantly plugging the toilet and having to plunge it. It is a family joke now. When she was little once in a while I would give her a gylcerin supository. Make sure she gets fiber like raisin bran cereal. Its just her anatomy. A life long thing . very normal.

My 5 (almost 6) y/o has the SAME problem! Water Water Water, try to get her to drink as much as possible. Include more grains in her diet. Get rid of the white breads/pasta as they can make it worse for her. But water is the main thing... no matter how many veggies/fruits my kid has, she still suffers horribly while going #2. My husband cracks up and says that he's amazed at what comes out of her rear end. LOL

Lots of water will add moisture and make it easier to eliminate.
