My husband takes 3 Advil EVERY morning for various reasons. He may take 2 more later in the day. He always has a different reason for taking it...head, ears, legs, ect. Basically, it has become a habit. Is there any danger in this? Any side effects that anyone knows of?

What can I do next?

I'm not a Dr., but my dad is and he always told me that taking Advil or any other ibuprofin product over prolonged periods of time could cause some stomach issues. It can thin the lining of the stomach and cause stomach upset.

Yes, aside from possible kidney damage and the blood-thinning properities of ibuprofen (generic name for Advil) there is also the possibility of gastric ulcers/bleeding. Advil is coated, which helps, but it's not good to take that much medicine period.

Maybe he should consult a doctor about why he's having so much aches/pains that he requires mediine every day. Accupuncture may be somthing to look into as well.

Ibuprofen is also an anticoagulant (blood thinner). It couldn't be safe to take that much daily.

Hi Lindee - here is some info I have, hope it helps:

Taking OTC pain relievers can be harmful if you take too many for too long. Commonly used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), and naproxen (Aleve), when used too often for too long, can cause the following:

Ulcers, which may bleed
Kidney damage
Liver damage

How Much is Too Much?
"For most people, ibuprofen is a safe drug," says Dr. Lipsky. "We know that if some people take too much for too long, it can damage their kidneys, but we don't know who those people are or how long is too long. The same is true for stomach bleeding. Some [people] can take NSAIDs for months with no problems. Others get bleeding after only two weeks."

To be safe, carefully follow the package directions or your doctor's recommendations when taking NSAIDs. Taking too much of these medicines can increase your risk of adverse effects, especially if you are older.

It is definitely dangerous to take Advil regularly!! It can cause kidney damage and even failure.

A good friend of our family took Advil daily for back pain for years. In the last year they discovered that her kidneys were failing and was just told this week that she will have to start dialysis. This kind of damage is NOT reversable.

Tell your husband that the dangers are real. I would even suggest that he see a doctor to test his kidneys just to be on the safe side!!

I don't want to scare you, but I've seen what this can do!!

My SIL used to take advil regularly and suddenly she became allergic to any NSAIDs and many other drugs. It is part of some syndrome that is on the rise. But the point is, it is not safe to take everyday.
