Tips for Traveling on an Airplane with a 5 Month Old.

This October, my husband and 5 month old will be traveling on a plane up north. I am a little nervous because the cheapest flight we could get leaves at 7pm and doesn;t arrive until 11:30pm. We plan to take half day off work so we can get to the airport and possibly get on an earlier flight.

Any tips on flying with an infant. Since my parents up north have supplies from my nephew, I was just going to bring a Baby Bjorn to strap her into. Any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

The night travel would probably be better since she'll be sleepy. They probably won't allow they baby bjorn... they wouldn't when my kids were babes (now 10,7 & 5).

The reason is that in an emergency you are attached and you'll squish the baby. We had a contraption that was a vest, but the baby was on a tether rather than directly attached to the body... so in an emergency you could lower the baby away from you, but still be attached.... okay not a great description.

It was called the Baby B'air - and at the time the only approved flight harness. There maybe more by now.

I traveled alone with both my kids beginning at 8 weeks. The best suggestion I can give you is to make sure they are nursing or drinking a bottle during take off and decent. They will be able to take the change in air pressure in their ears better if they are drinking something. You may be better off leaving your flight at the 7pm hour as your infant is more likely to sleep during the flight, which your fellow travelers will apreciate.

Just bring alot of drinks in bottles - or even a pacifier if she uses one. The sucking helps with the ears popping when you go to land. More than likely, you'll be more anxious and everything will be fine in the end. Parents always get hyped up before travelling with kids - we do!

Also just carry lots of extra diapers, a blankie, change of clothes - you know, all the fun baby stuff we get to lug around!

Have fun!

I flew across the country when my little one was 6 months old. The things to remember is that their ears can hurt from the pressure on the way up and down. I nursed my son then to help. If you don't nurse then give him a couple of ounces of formula even if it isn't feeding time to help pop his ears.
I took my big stroller and car seat. It really wasn't as much problem as I thought and just left it at the gate. The bjorn is a great idea!! I wouldn't worry about that time of night...just be prepared to stay up a little while after you arrive.
Take a couple of toys on the plane (favorite toys) and some food (if they are eating). I made sure to take all essential baby drug on the plane too just in case. Most everyone was really good to us.
Good luck and let me know if I can help in any other way!

I traveled with my son at 4 months old and it was not an issue at all for him. Depending on your daughters schedule, the time of the flight might work out great. I would suggest that you plan on feeding her while taking off just in case her ears pop. Sucking on something will help to alleviate any discomfort for her ears. Try to not let her catch a cold before you leave - being plugged up on a flight is never fun. Hopefully, she'll fall asleep after eating and sleep the rest of the way.

The back of planes are usually louder with a constant noise from the engines. That might lull her to sleep and be helpful, too. My son did not like being in a car and would never fall asleep in his car seat. If your daughters prone to falling asleep in the car - I really don't think you'll have any problem.

Good luck!

Hi J. it is good to have them sucking on something on take off and landing as it helps stablize the pressure in their ears due to the altitude change. I would also suggest packing light on the diaper bag as your parents will have anything extra you might need, especially with the way they are charging for bags. It is a good idea to check with the airline and get their size requirements for carryons.

I'm an 'old' mom now - almost a grandmother - one thing you must have with you is NASAL drops. When your ears start to hurt, your baby's ears will also be. Some drops in her nose will 'open' the ears too (As babies don't chew chewing gum!)I've learned this trick with a fly attendant many years ago. It works. Enjoy your trip and your family.

When my hubby and I fly up north with our son, we always buy diapers, wipes and anything else we can there. Also, when our son was a baby and we flew there, we only took 2 bottles and 1 can of formula and bought the rest there. We only took 2 bottles, because my mom is always washing the dirty dishes, so she didn't mind that we did that, in fact, it worked out pretty good. I did take a couple of extra changes of clothes in the diaper bag, but I usually keep those in there anyway. Also, the first time I flew back home was by myself, and instead of lugging the infant car seat around, too, my parents borrowed one from a friend of theirs that has small children, but wasn't using it at the time, so that was also helpful. Not sure what airline you're flying on, but usually when we fly, the flight attendants are very helpful with helping parents with small children get settled. They even put my luggage in the overhead bins the first time I flew, so that I wouldn't have to put our son down (he was sleeping). Just ask for help with anything if you need it! Most of the time, I have found them to be very helpful!!
