Hi, I am having my first ever garage sale next weekend and would like to know if anyone has tips for having a successful garage sale. My neighbor is having hers the same weekend. She prices her kids' shirts at 25 cents. Do I really need to price that low? She says that people still try to bargain her down from a quarter! Thanks!

People really are looking for a bargain. I priced my kids clothes at 25 cents and item, adult clothes at 50 cents an item. People will try to get a lower price on everything...so we slightly upped what was on the sticker, and then let them talk us down. I had certain items I knew a head of time that I could not budge on. Also, I advertised in the Daily Herald, and on Craigs list...we got a bunch of people. Also see if there is a good "garage sale day" in your neighborhood. Thursday's are actually ours. I did way better on Thurs and Fri than I did on Saturday.

You might also want to check to see if your city/village requires a permit. You never know which of your neighbors will turn you in for running a garage sale without a permit.

Sad, but true story.

Hi C.,

If you really want to sell your stuff, price it cheaply. It's better to get rid of it then to have to bring it all back in the house. Whatever doesn't sell, donate! I've had a few garage sales over the years and everyone wants a bargin. They will haggle with you over a quarter believe it or not. Expect to be offered 1/2 of what your selling it for.
Most people price kids clothes at .50 to $1.00 per item if it's in good shape. Don't sell stained, torn or non working items. Put them in a box labled FREE or just toss them.
Make sure you put signs all over the area directing them to your house. An ad in the local Herald doesn't hurt either. Maybe your neighbor will go in with you. That's what we've done. The more the merrier. Have fun.

My mom just had a garage sale and here's what we did...
We didn't price anything. When people asked, I agave them a price about .50 higher than I thought because I knew they would bargain. If it's something people really want, they will pay what you are asking, as long as you are reasonable. Good luck!
