Hi Mommies,

My 17 month old HATES wearing hats with a passion. With the winter months coming up, she's going to have to wear one, but I was hoping to ask if any of you mommies have tips or tricks to get your child to keep their hat on their head?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I was very surprised when I tried the hat on my daughter this past week, and to my surprise, she didn't rip it off like she normally does. I think part of it is because I immediately put her winter coat on afterwards. Looks like I worried for nothing, ha ha.

Thanks everybody!

Oh boy! this brings back memories of hard fought battles!!

tip #1 buy a fleece hat. they are way more comfie. The knit hats are scratchy.

tip #2 make sure its not too tight. Take your child to the store and try it on her.

tip #3 dont get the kind that velcro under her chin. They will make her too hot and she'll want to remove it.

tip #4 practice in the house for a little while untill she gets used to the feeling of the hat on her head.

provide a distracting activity (like painting? playdoh? cooking?) or anything you don't let her do on a daily basis so she won't think about the hat being on.

tip #5 keep putting the hat back on and say things like "we can't play outside without a hat".

tip #6 don't "make" her wear a hat in the car/store because they are heated and she'll be too warm.

hope these help ;)

I have a 17th month old and he wants to do whatever mommy and daddy do. So I would start wearing a hat and say ... mommy's hat where is your hat? He may start to like it soon enough. Also you can say ... if we go outside you must wear a hat. My son understands the concept so he puts the hat on ... as soon as we are in the car it comes right off.

Hi J.- I have a 17 mo old girl as well...we had a couple of days where she didn't want to wear a hat so I dressed her up in everything but her hat, we went outside and I explained how chilly it was and how I was going to put my hat on-- then I said that I needed to put hers on as well. She let me put it on (I think because I had mine on) and has been o.k. wearing one ever since.

FYI- I noticed your #2 is coming in Dec- ours is coming in Feb-- I'm anticipating life going from crazy to crazier!!! Good luck!

My little guy would not where a hat either. But I found a Lighting McQueen hat and mittens and now he wears them when he should. Sometimes he does not take them off. Does she have a favorite character or color?

my daughter was like that and i got the one that ties under the chin. she wanted to remove it but couldn't it's not about keeping her happy but more about keeping her warm eventually she'll get used to it and putting that hat on wont seem like a chore.

or if she keeps he hat on give her like a treat children love treats. my daughter had no choice because it nothing i hate more than a sick child. i hate them feelings sick and than i hate not getting anysleep because they feel sick.
